If the bible isn't true and is mere mythology then it doesn't really matter whether or not Jesus claimed to be God. But Bart and Alex both know deep down that the bible(God's word) is completely true and authoritative. Thus if they can show us that it doesn't support Jesus's divinity then we must accept it for God's word must be accepted. Sadly, this is just a hateful attack on the Son of God. But no one ever had a reason to hate the perfect Christ. As He Himself said "They hated Me without reason." John 15:25

I see no reason why Jesus would not call himself god as going by the verses of the Old Testament the only difference between Adam and god was eternal life, so are we not gods, yes you are (Psalms) and so was Jesus. I think the current fixation for Jesus being god in the church is just theocracy making him the most important sacrifice. So they had to make the trinity etc etc

EHRMAN DENIEES JESUS’ CLAIM TO BE THE SON OF MAN BECAUSE HE KNOWS IT IS A CLAIM TO B GOD By Ehrman’s criterion of DISSIMILARITY, not only is Mark a reliable Gospel but the verses quoted from here are valid because Jesus refers to the son of man in the third person [see Ehrman, “How Jesus became God”, p59, pdf version] Premise 1: The Messiah sits at the right hand of God [Mark 12:35-37] Premise 2: The son of man who comes on the clouds, sits at the right hand of God [Mark 14:62] Conclusion 1: The messiah is the Son of Man who comes with the clouds. Premise 3 (from conclusion 1): The Messiah is Son of man who comes with the clouds. Premise 4: Jesus identifies himself as the Messiah [Mark 14:61-63] Conclusion 2: Jesus, claims to be the Messiah, son of Man, who comes with the clouds. Premise 5: The Son of Man is given worship that is due to only God! [Daniel 7:13-14, the word for worship here is פְלַח [pelach, Strong's number 6399 ] and is used in Daniel ONLY for deity, not persons [compare Daniel 3:14, 3:17] Premise 6: Coming on the clouds is an Old Testament motif applied to only God! [Isaiah 19:1, Psalm 104:3] Premise 7: The son of MAN IN Ezekiel, shares God’s glory [Ezekiel 1:26-28] Premise 8: Ehrman agrees, noting in his book that the Son of Man sits on the throne of God and shares His power! [Ehrman, How Jesus became God, read from p39] Premise 9: God shares His glory with no other being [Isaiah 42:8] Conclusion 3: The Son of Man Equal to God in nature. Premise 10 (from conclusion 3): The son of man is God. Premise 11 (from conclusion 2): Jesus claims to be the Son of man COCLUSION 4: JESUS CLAIMS TO BE GOD!

Also, Luke 22:70 "Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.”
@corinnebrixton6577 Жыл бұрын
"He's actually not crucified for calling himself God. His divine claims actually have no relation to any of the crucifixion narratives." Sorry? 'Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” (Mark 14:61-64) I'm sure Bart Ehrman knows these verses from Mark's gospel (which he acknowledges is probably the earliest gospel). What is Jesus saying here? Here's using the self-designation he most often uses for himself and taking it right back to where it comes from - Daniel 7:13-14. The one who (remarkably in the Jewish Scriptures) is described as 'like a son of man' and yet comes as God does (on the clouds of heavens), to whom God gives authority and glory (and God does not give his glory "to another") and who is worshipped (despite God being the only one who is to be worshipped). And Jesus before the high priest not only admits to being 'the Son of the Blessed One' but takes up the language of Daniel which speaks of him being worshipped alongside God. What's the high priest's response? - 'You have heard the blasphemy.' The High Priest understands exactly the claim that Jesus is making - and denounces it as blasphemy. It's a claim to divinity and that's exactly how it's understood by the listeners. (And it's there in very similar terms in both Matthew and Luke - with the same reaction from the Jewish leaders). Now, Bart Erhman IS right that the charge that Pontius Pilate is considering it that Jesus is the King of the Jews. It's there in all three synoptics but made most explicit in Luke - who records what the Jews say when they take Jesus to Pilate: "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king." (LUke 23:2). Why's that? Because Pilate won't care about their Jewish scruples about blasphemy, but he will care if someone is setting himself up as a king in opposition to Caesar - that's what will get you killed under a Roman governor (and the Jews know it!). That's why the Jews play the system and change the charge from blasphemy to sedition. That's what will get you crucified. Actually, Bart Ehrman is wrong again saying that Pilate kills him for claiming to be king of the Jews (though he is right in saying that's a political claim). PIlate can see through it all - all four gospels tell us the same thing: that Pilate can see Jesus' innocence and doesn't consider him guilty of any crime. He knows the Jews have handed Jesus over because of envy, but eventually caves in to the crowd. (It may well be that his own political situation was precarious at this time due to the political situation in Rome with his supporter Sejanus having recently fallen out of favour with Tiberius - and he therefore wanted to avoid open conflict with the Jews.). So it was precisely Jesus' claim to be God that got him killed. Bart also doesn't really seem to have fully addressed the fact that in Mark 2 the religious leaders DO clearly see Jesus' claims as blasphemous - and Jesus doesn't tell them, 'no, no - I wasn't really claiming to be God there' Just the opposite in fact. Oh, and Mark also tells us in the same narrative, "Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts." And what would Mark, a good Jew, know? "Yahweh knows the thoughts of man." (Psalm 94:11) Oh, and a couple of chapters later, Mark records Jesus calming a storm with his words. And his disciples (in the boat with him at the time): "They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" (4:41) - Actually, they know who stills storms - Yahweh again (Psalm 107:29). I could go on (has power over death, calls himself Lord of the Sabbath, creates matter, is called 'my Son' by a voice from heaven, calls himself the son of the vineyard owner (ie God) - and this is all in Mark's gospel, not John's).

This would have either been the one of the greatest misunderstandings or the greatest conspiracies in human history, one that has managed to keep going despite many of its earliest proponents being put to death for doggedly adhering to it. I just don't think Bart Ehrman's claim is credible when you consider all the texts. The idea that Mark's gospel (as the earliest) didn't really claim that Jesus was God and that these were legends or embellishments that somehow suddenly evolved in the small number of decades before the gospel of John (with its more overt claims to divinity) seems sligtly ridiculous when you consider that Mark's gospel points to Jesus being the son of God... in the first verse. I suppose that Prof Ehrman will claim that's really not a claim to divinity, but it's funny that the religious leaders of Jesus' day seemed to know with great clarity that Jesus was making claims to divinity... in the second chapter of Mark. And then just a couple of chapters on, Jesus is demonstrating the sort of power over nature that the Jewish Scriptures spoke of as being the power that was wielded by God himself. 7:59 It's interesting that Bart said it is easier to say "Your sins are forgiven" but completely ignores the context of the time and WHO Christ was speaking to. Jesus was asking a rhetoric question to the scribes "Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?" (Mark 2:8-9). To a Jew, it is quite impossible to say "your sins are forgiven" because only God can do that (Exodus 34:6-7, Psalm 103:2-3, Isaiah 43:25 and Micah 7:18-19). Funnily enough, it is later on said "The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" (Mark 2:10). Literally TRIPLING DOWN on his claim to be God in both the title Son of Man (Daniel 7:13), and the authority in "HAS authority to forgive sins". In actual fact, healing the paralytic has been done later in Acts 9:32-35 and Acts 14:8-10 by the apostles, so it is "easier" for Jesus to say to get up and walk, because it has been done by others. I put easier in quotes because if you ignore the context of John 14:12, it does seem easier by logic because it is not only Jesus that did it. But Jesus says in John 14:12 that whoever believes in him (Jesus) will do greater things than these (speaking of his own miracles). The greater speaking of numbers as Paul healed more people than Jesus did in his ministry. The point is, it is contingent on the belief in Christ to do these miracles so this is not easy either since Jesus gave authority for them to do this, meaning only Christ has authority over healing. Bart seems intelligent, will not take that away from him but his reading on the Gospels in context to their beliefs in 1st Century is clearly lacking if he did not pick up on these things. Furthermore, he is wrong about the general Christian understanding on this passage

You are ridicolous. Another reason to not be like you. Atheism leads to Nothing. No God No Spirituality Not an actually Community Only Loneliness and Obsession for God and what you do not even believe anymore. But yes be disgusting Godless ass kisser... Let me ask some questions (be honest to answer): the first question will be... how does you feel to have less sacred things in your miserable alone godless life then us? And then why are you into a cult that leads to nothing? And why you are a part on something that have nothing to offer to us believers, but loneliness?? and finally how can you deny what you do not know or have in your alone godless life? and why God should care about what you think to exist? Go and be honest once in your life you Goddenier. (Do not write to this message if you actually have nothing to say, as you always godless people do... What waste of lives yours, for real). 4:30 Didn't Pontius Pilate want to release Jesus, claiming that he found no blame in Him. He went further and offered the people 2 options of who to release, Jesus or Barabbas and the people all shouted to crucify Him? Also he, Pontius Pilate wrote a sign saying King of The Jews, in Hebrew, Greek and Latin so that all could see, and the Jewish authorities told him to remove it. It does not sound to me like Pilate wanted to kill Jesus. I might be mistaken though... so open for a conversation

In which gospel? If you watch the rest of the video you will find that he talked about Pontius Pilate and how the gospels progressively absolve him of the blame. Just a brief search seems to point to John.
@Colthrone Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. Jesus was no threat to Rome. Pilate and Herod sent him back and forth to each other because neither one had any idea what to do with him. It was the angry mob that caused his crucifixion.
@diegog1853 Жыл бұрын
If you watch the whole thing he actually speaks about it. And how Pilate becomes less and less guilty for the later sources. The idea being that the "civilized" greeks and romans actually writing the gospels (that were not jews) wanted to blame the uncivilized jews for the death of the son of God, and not the romans, remember that the early spread of christianity focused a lot in spreading to rome and their provinces, which included a lot of the letters in the new testament. Historically, there is no reason to believe Pilate will care at all about not killing jesus. the romans crucified people in the hundreds. They also spoke about some reasons to believe for why Jesus did see himself as the future king of the jews once god came and bring the apocalipse. And at the very least, some people believed he would be the king of the jews. Which gives plenty of reasons for Pilate to kill him. I really recomend watching the whole thing, is very interesting.

@@InShadowsLinger missed that part, sorry XD, so what extra biblical sources or reasons does he give for saying that the Bible absolves him of blame, and what would their motive be for absolving him of it? Wrong. If he was merely claiming that he existed before Abraham, he would have said I was instead of I AM. By using the awkward phrasing I AM, he’s making a very clear and concise point referencing “I AM who I AM” from the Old Testament. He’s literally clamming to be God, and gets stoned for it. Jesus did say many times He is God. He also PROVED He was God by doing: miracles to prove He was God. Healing all sicknesses and diseases Raising the dead Walking on water Controlling the wind and the sea Turn water into wine Casting out demons Talking about the future what would happen He multiplied a few fish and a few loaves of bread to feed thousands more thanks once Telling people about their hidden past Forgiving sins While Jesus was alive people around Him addressed Jesus as Lord Jesus talked about heaven and the kingdom of heaven, hell, sin, the commandments, repentance Rising from the dead after three days Luke 2:7 And she (Mary) brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John (John the Baptist). The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Mark 1:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John (John the Baptist) did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness. And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

How was any medicine not ritual based? Why is it not common knowledge as to what he was handing out as medicine? Luke said to trust doctors because their knowledge was given to them by God. Uh, how is that not proof he was grifting? And then, the Catholics, who push Luke more than anyone, created the 1st hospitals. The names Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John were affixed sometime late second century. The authors never tell us who they are, and they never tell us their sources. The stories are written in high-level Greek, the followers of Jesus would have uneducated fishermen, ... illiterate, and would have spoken Aramaic. The NT captures a circulating tradition, part oral, part written. How much is fact vs. fiction is unknowable, it is underdetermined. We have limited access to the historical Jesus.

1. Every single time Jesus called Himself the “Son of Man.” The Pharisees sentenced Jesus to death for blasphemy due to Him using this title. Why? Because it’s a reference to the divine figure seen in the book of Daniel, chapter 7. We know this vision is exactly what Jesus intended to bring to mind when He used that title because at his trial he referenced this vision. “Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”“I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “Why do we need any more witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.” Daniel 7:14 KJV Jesus is claiming to be the son of man who sits at the right hand of power The son of man is given dominion(everlasting), glory, kingdom(shall not be destroyed), “that all people, nations, language, should serve him” “But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.” Daniel 7:18 KJV The “saints of the most high”, who is the most “high”? “until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.” Daniel 7:22 KJV “Judgement was given to the saints of the most high” "Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?" "Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth." Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. " I WILL RAISE IT UP" “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die” why would God allow this even knowing that it would lead to confusion amongst the church and even scholars and atheists is God not powerful enough to put on human flesh and reveal himself by coming down to his own construct? Ehrman does think through this a lot (I didn't realize that the major instances of Jesus explicitly saying "I'm God" are all (or most) in John for example). However, there is one thing he talks about here that I don't agree with his logic: forgiving the paralytic's sins. When Ehrman is explaining the story, at 8:42, he states that Jesus's enemies are the ones that point out "Only God can forgive sin." Ehrman and then Alex use this later when they bring up John 20:23 when Jesus says "if you forgive then they are forgiven." This story helps their point because they say that priests would say "your sins were forgiven" too, and they were not claiming to be God. Therefore, Jesus is only saying he has more authority than the Pharisees. As it stands, I don't find anything wrong with that argument (I think it's pretty compelling actually). However, there is a detail in that story that both of them leave out: the Pharisees never said "Only God can forgive sin." If you look up the story in all the synoptic gospels (Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12, and Luke 5:17-26), they all word this as not something the Pharisees were saying, but something that they were thinking internally. It's something we only know about because the gospels claim that Jesus knew their internal thoughts, and they don't record him telling the crowd what the Pharisees were thinking (Jesus not telling everything to the crowd isn't out of character for him either since the gospels are filled with stories of him explaining stuff to just the disciples after he preached, which leads me to conclude that this detail was something that Jesus explained afterwards to the disciples). If that was the line of thinking of his accusers that led him to do the miracle that shows his authority, I would expect Jesus to make some sort of correction to their logic if they were incorrect; which is absent in the story. If their thought was referring to authority given to priests as representatives of God himself forgiving sin, wouldn't a more direct thought be something along the lines of "doesn't this guy know only people given authority by God can forgive sin?" and not "doesn't this guy know only God himself can forgive sin." This dichotomy, just like with the famous "before Abraham was, I AM", story leads me to think that the Pharisees knew exactly what Jesus was trying to communicate when he told the man "Your sins are forgiven"; that he was in fact God himself, not only just someone with more authority than the Pharisees. To sum it up, to conclude that that story is not Jesus making a claim to divinity is an interpretation that is not supported by the story itself (and, if I may add, Jesus's statement of giving the disciples authority is found in John, the book that Ehrman argues is not reliable to learn about Jesus; I only see room for doubt of the interpretation that its a story of Jesus's claim to divinity if you use that saying in John, but according to Ehrman, we can't use that book).

This is quite compelling, but couldn't one just say that the Pharisees were wrong about who could or couldn't forgive sins?
@jesusbrickfreaklego9388 Жыл бұрын
@@VictorMainaKinuthia That's certainly possible, but one would have to look elsewhere to make that claim that the Pharisees were wrong. If you were to use the rest of the Bible to make that claim, I would argue that the rest of it would support their thought, that only God can forgive sins. At least from the internal source of the religion itself, there is nothing to disprove their thought, but instead, agrees with their sentiment. I'll even go one step further; lets go with the option that Matthew, Mark, and Luke were in fact made up; which means that that authors' are creating Jesus and using stories to describe who this made-up person was supposed to be. This still doesn't change what the most obvious (or at least what I argued above) interpretation would be; it's a story that claims his divinity. If they had free-reign to write whatever they wanted (because we are assuming it's a fictional story) and the point of the story was just to show that Jesus had more authority than the Pharisees without also being God, I would argue it would make more sense to write that the Pharisees' internal (or even something they said out-loud since that probably seems more believable if they were trying to create a lie, at least to me) thought was focused on their authority to forgive sins (or what kind of people were given that authority by God) rather God's authority itself. The fact that the story not only has Jesus not correct or challenge their belief that only God can forgive sins but that these writers would have decided to make that the statement that the Pharisees were thinking of in the first place still leads me to believe that their intention of the story was to show that Jesus was making a claim of divinity. Basically, I'm saying that if this was made up or not, the interpretation that aligns most with the story as it is written is a claim to divinity. (P.S. I know this wasn't necessarily what you were asking/saying, but your question got me thinking more, and I wanted to share)
@VictorMainaKinuthia Жыл бұрын
@@jesusbrickfreaklego9388 You make a good point, but we can still support this claim using the content from the Bible. If we're taking Jesus' lack of correction as a metric, we need to remember that the same story is retold in Matthew 9. In verse 8, the crowd is recorded as saying that the authority to forgive sins has been given to human beings. "When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings." Matthew 9:8 (NRSVUE) By your logic, Jesus' lack of correction for the crowd implies that God isn't the only one who can forgive sins, but He has also granted that authority to mankind including "The Son of Man".

the romans spoke Greek because Greek was the lingua franca of the roman empire supposedly but nothing can be known of the past. There is simply no way of knowing who spoke what when and where nor how many. You may guess and believe but not know - directly immediately personally experience anything about the past, because the past cannot be verified. What is called history is and can only possibly be, belief, supposition or guesswork because the past cannot be directly immediate personally experienced or known, and that only leaves belief.

@@vhawk1951kl thanks for your comment. I disagree that history is simply belief. What I quoted is directly from a well known and respected historian. Correct, had the Jews (not the Gentiles, because Jesus didn't preach to the Gentiles!!!) not strayed from Jesus' commands, then Islam probably would not have existed now. Unfortunately, (most) Jews ended up rejecting him (the Jews had this habit of rejecting prophets), while the Gentiles turned Jesus into something so vastly different by injecting polytheistic thoughts and theories (not unsurprising since the Romans and Greeks were polytheistic and had the biggest influence back in the day), hence Islam restoring the message. I have had both Heaven and Hell experiences I can go on for a long time so here is the short form. Heaven: I was taken on an helicopter ride and I was observing building and I was saying wow, wow on repeat. Another time I was near a big building and there was a radio singing worship songs to Jesus (it sounded so good). Once the Holy Spirit told me “do you want me to take you to Heaven” I answered “No” then He said “Just know we are preparing a banquet” Jesus is awesome, do not miss out om being with Him forever.
Ehrman's right that only the Gospel of John has Jesus claiming himself to be God, but the other sources do have him claiming some divinity (though not on full equality with God). Jesus notes himself as the "Son of God", which is either taken literally (as with most Christians) or taken just as a symbol of praise. If we accept the second thesis, then Peter, Mark, and Matthew should also be called "Sons of God", but obviously the title's meaning for Jesus is distinguished from the title's meaning for anyone else. Jesus explicitly claims Godhood in John, but claims some loosely-construed form of divinity in the other Gospels while even submitting to God in the personhood of the Father. Since Christians are not polytheists and affirm the existence of only one God, there cannot be some "lesser" form of divinity in Christian doctrine but only a single divinity, so it makes sense to simply state Jesus was "God", which Paul elaborates on in Philippians 2:6. The understanding of Jesus as completely equal to the Father is a misrepresentation of Trinitarian dogma. Trinitarians believe that Jesus had divinity, the Father had divinity, and the Holy Spirit had divinity. There only exists one divinity since God is one, so Jesus' divinity is equal to the Father's divinity. Yet Jesus still submits himself to the Father on basis of his human nature, so Jesus is also subordinate to the Father. Trinitarians don't claim to know how specifically this subordination happens, but it's logical to call Jesus God if he claims any form of divinity at all, even if it isn't direct Godhood, otherwise Trinitarians would be polytheistic.

@@osman7900 No worries about offence, we are all trying to reach the truth in the best way we can. Thanks for the conversation. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.” John 1:18 "No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God." John 20:28 Thomas declared, “My Lord and my God”. Jesus does not correct him. Titus 2:13 "...the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ." 2 Peter 1:1 "...by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ." John 10:30 "I and the Father are one." @@robertgellert1325 Upon reading the Gospels, I, years ago, independently, came to much the same conclusion that Ehrmann is describing here. It's not a matter of "choosing to believe"; it's a matter of examining the texts closely, asking questions about what's there, what's not there, authorship, language, context, etc., to figure out the fullness of what they are telling us. And what these texts are telling us, in the night-and-day difference in theology between the Synoptic Gospels and John, is that early Christians' ideas on who Jesus was and what he was about were evolving dramatically over the course of the First Century. So many concepts like the divinity of Jesus that are now central to Christianity are just so suspiciously absent in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Heck, some concepts don't even appear in the New Testament at all. The doctrine of the Trinity, for example, isn't really spelled out until Tertullian (AD 200ish), and it was controversial at the time. So once we have noticed these facts, what are we supposed to think about them? Given the context of Hebrew and Jewish title of Son of Man, and of the philosophical idea of authority, is it not consistent to state that Jesus is claiming to be God?

Thomas called Jesus "My Lord, and my God," and Jesus replied "Now you believe? Blessed are those who believe without seeing." If he wasn't God he would have said not to call Him that. He refers to Himself as the 'I AM' multiple times which led to the jews to wanting to stone him all the time. Multiple times it's said his followers worshipped him and Jesus never stops them. And he claims oneness with God multiple times. This argument that he wasn't atleast implying that he's God is ridiculous.

@Nasir.Ali33 Because that was what Jesus said The Spirit was being sent for. Jesus was the one who was sacrificed and died for our sins. He said no one comes to father except through Him and He is the way, the truth, and the life. The Holy Spirit is God like the Father and the Son but each has a different role in your salvation. One cannot truly live by the Holy Spirit if one denies the Father or the Son and vice versa. For example one can say they have Jesus as their lord but if they reject the Holy Spirit then they are committing a sin. And if one Rejects Jesus then he says they reject thr Father as well.

I'd read Daniel 7:13-14, then parallel that with Mark 14:62, John 3:13, Luke 5:24; 19:1-10, and Mark 10:45. Jesus was the Son of Man described in Daniel 7 as stated in the first verse in Mark. So interpret that as you will, but it's quite obvious Jesus was the son of Man.
@diegog1853 Жыл бұрын
@@tedarcher9120 I think maybe you are already assigning some meaning to the phrase "son of Man", as if it has some apparent grand meanining. But it doesn't have to be. I can say, I am the son of Man, as if, I am the son of Mankind, I am the consequence of mankind before me. I mean "son of man" is mentioned in the old testament and not necessarily as meaning anything spectacular. God called ezechiel son of man multiple times. It could very well be just a poetic way of saying "man". Sure maybe with the "the" particle it could mean something more important, but when you get to so specific parts of language, you have to check the original quote in aramaic. Not the greek translation of a second or third hand witness account. I am just saying that... even if he did, it doesn't necessarily mean he was putting himself as something special.

@@SpinozasghostArgument ad populum? Listen, whether people knew exactly who the son of man was (specifically the son of man shown in the vision to Daniel).. It was clear that he was to be a king with divine origins who sits at the right hand of the "Ancient of Days" which is universally understood to be God based on the previous verses of Daniel 7. Christ confirms that he is that son of man in several places in the synoptics, but most notably when he says that he will come in the clouds of heaven and will sit at the right hand of power (dynameōs)(indicating a supernatural power, not a natural one). So whether Christ claimed to be God...or he claimed to be the son of Man... He is not claiming to be a merely human preacher who will die for blasphemy and remain in the grave. He is claiming to be Lord over all of God's creation. At that point, the question shouldn't be "Did Jesus claim to be God" it should be: who is God and who is the son of Man? A thorough searching of the Tanakh with respect to The Angel of the LORD should easily reveal this and it is almost completely parallel with general trinitarian doctrine. I would also add that multiplicity in the Godhead is not a Christian invention. This was a common point of Jewish theology known as "the two powers in heaven" until it was declared a heresy following Yeshua's disciples preaching his resurrection and Lordship.

It's a very simple question to me. Jesus doesn't say "I am God" with this exact words because He is the Son of God and He wants the people to differentiate them. They have the same divine essence, but the Son in fact came in a role of obedience to save all the people and reconnect them to God the Father. Jesus in fact made several claims that He is God, having the same essence of Him, but He did that in a manner that people would believe in his divine essence but differentiate, because they are two different people with different roles. He was made of flesh, bones and blood after all, He was human and God the Father is not human. In many passages of Matthew, one of the books that Bart mentioned that He doesn't claims, He accepts worship, says about His authority in heaven and earth, promise to be continually present, puts himself in the same level of God and the Holy Spirit, Walks on water and more. The only question I ask everyone is this: Could He who is only a prophet do all this?

For example the concepts of divine investiture, mormon polytheism in which the Godhood is not a Trinity but a Triumvirate, and in which Jesus is Jehovah. In that context, it places El as the head of the Caananite pantheon and YHWH as a divine son of a god. A pantheon in which Yeshua is the incarnation of Elohim’s son, Yahweh. "I am" is a statement of identity and is often translated "I am he", "I am the man", "it is I" in the NT. Saying _ego eimi_ isn't a claim to be God, as the blind man said it too (John 9:9). In context, Jesus was saying Abraham foresaw the Day of Christ and was glad and declared "Before Abraham was, I am he (who Abraham saw)." Of course because Jesus 'existed' as part of God's plan for redemption (not literally existed, until he was born).
@SmalltimR3 ай бұрын
As He was in heaven prior-to earth, it would make perfect sense that Jesus was claiming to have been in existence at the time Abraham was alive on earth - hens, the conversation, in-that they were asking Him if he was 'greater' than their forefather, and moreso, where Jesus' claim was in-effect claiming to be just that, as GOD's firstborn son, of whom we read, would be established(on a throne) by GOD from eternity past. And so the problem you see, is that people tend to come into such topics with preconceived views or beliefs, that would otherwise govern their interpretations, though it isn't until we approach matters with an open heart and open mind, that we find all of the pieces fitting together perfectly - that is to say, that Jesus is, was, and always will be, GOD's firstborn son, and who was with GOD prior-to the beginning of creation, and who is now leading GOD's fallen children back to where they belong.

@@smalltimer4370 False. The universe itself is a product of God’s ‘Logos’ (meaning reason, plan, word). Similar to how one, who wants a kid, imagines and plans out what they’ll be like before they’re born. Only once the kid is born does that plan “become flesh” (comes to fruition). The Logos, as Philo said, is “neither uncreated as God, nor yet created as you (humans)” but rather “a hostage, as it were, to both sides.” Paul, another Hellenistic Jew, echoes this in 1 Timothy 2:5, saying “There is one God and one mediator between God and men: the man Christ Jesus.” Notice he does NOT call him “the God-man” or some such trinitarian nonsense. Paul makes a clear distinction between God and Jesus, especially in Ephesians 4:6, where he rightly declares “One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in ALL.” The same cannot be said of Jesus.

@@matthewlockhart6159 What is false exactly? It would appear that you are now appealing to a straw-man to the reality that there is no such thing as Jesus existing in His Father's mind in scripture. As for the logos being anything other than an abstract for GOD's spoken word carried-out in agency, your proposed explanation outlines the detriment that comes by adding and removing to scripture, and at the cost of the simplicity of the truth - that is to say, that this always leads us away from the simple truth, rather than gaining clarity. NB, I think it's important to outline that we are in agreement that Jesus is neither equal-to nor GOD Himself, and moreso, that the truth cannot come as a reflex to false teachings, but moreso, that it must stands on it's own, without the addition or removal of anything. And moreso, that Jesus' existence prior-to earth is never defined as a figment of GOD's imagination, but rather, that His presence in heaven prior-to earth, is defined in the form(outward shape) of GOD, and who was then revered for exercising obedience(ie, action), by 'not seeking' equality with GOD, while in said form - see That is why we find Jesus identified before all things, and that all things were made through(or by) Him - here again, not as a figment of GOD's imagination, quite rather, that He is described as a worker at His Father's side, carrying-out His Father will accordingly. And thus, we read, that when Jesus returned to heaven, and after saying He would return to where He was before, would not prove to be a figment of GOD's imagination, but very literally, to take His place at His Father's side - that is to say, by once again, receiving the glory that He shared with His Father before the world existed, and thus, prior-to being born a man on earth. And so, in-spite of the efforts made to avoid the complete lack of scriptures identifying Jesus in His Father mind, or that such a view proves to be entirely based on the word of men, the fact remains that this is not accordance with GOD's word at all, but a product of human imaginations at work - see - think about it, and more importantly, pray about it.

And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: 10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: 11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. Matthew 4 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

I encourage everyone--especially atheists--to read the synoptic gospels just so you can realise how ridiculous a claim this man is making. It is especially damaging to atheist talking points as it is probably the easiest false claim to knock down. Jesus does claim to be God multiple times in the synoptic gospels. Two straightforward examples are: Matthew 16:16 -- You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Mark -- I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven. (Note that "I am" is the most direct claim to Godship in the bible as it is how Yahweh identifies. Even so, the claim only works because Bart ignores the rest of the New Testament. St. Paul's letters for instant predate all the gospels yet they all claim that Jesus is God. Titus 2:13 -- waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:6 -- Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage. His argument that John comes after the synoptic gospels and therefore is invalidated is absurd. By the same logic those very same gospels would be invalidated by the fact that St. Paul's letters predate them. St. Paul's letters claim that Jesus is God.

I can only assume Bart Ehrman's hatred for Christianity has led him to make such absurd claims. The fact that he's selling a course on the subject also leads me to believe he's being deliberately obtuse for nefarious reasons. Please--as a message to Christians and atheists alike--don't take the words and lectures of anyone as fact when you can read the sources for yourselves.

Most atheists were once Christians. Unlike most Christians they actually read the Bible. That’s a common way for a Christian to become an atheist. Ehrman’s claims really aren’t too different than the traditional Christian point of view. If the Bible said Jesus was god then the Council of Nicaea wouldn’t have been needed to proclaim Jesus god. That’s 300 years into Christianity.
@EnglishMike Жыл бұрын
In Matthew 16, at best, Jesus agrees with Peter's statement that he is "the Messiah, the Son of the living God". He does not outright say he's God incarnate. Bart's thesis is that believing he was the Messiah or the Son of Man, or the Son of God is not the same as Jesus (or his followers) believing he was God himself, in the flesh. He claims that was a later development as the faith evolved over the first few decades. He might be wrong, but it's certainly not as ridiculous as you claim if you don't look at it through Christian eyes.

@@LukasBarcz If there's one thing I know about Bart Ehrman having read a couple of his books and watched a bunch of his lectures and debates, it's that he doesn't hate Christianity or Christians. Far from it, in fact. The fact that you would slander him in this way shows that you are too blinded by you faith to think straight, or perhaps it is you who has the nefarious intent to deliberately denigrate the character of someone just because he dares to have a different opinion of what happened two thousand years ago. Having been a New Testament scholar for four decades, he clearly knows far more about the New Testament that you will ever know. If this is how you behave as a Christian, then why should anyone take your comments seriously?
@LukasBarcz Жыл бұрын
@@alexanderfloyd5099 I disagree with the line of argument that the Council of Nicea wouldn't have needed to proclaim Jesus God. To this day different sects are made constantly which reject the idea that Jesus is God. It is a constant struggle which needs constant affirmation. However both St. Peter and St. Paul believed Jesus was God as made evident in their letters. St. Peter especially is the authority as he was placed in charge by Christ after his death. The "traditional Christian point of view" was St. Peter's view. Gnostics and such arose too but they go directly against scripture. Heresy has always and will always be a problem in the church. The point I was making is that Jesus did claim to be God according to the scriptures, the testimonies of St. Peter and St. Paul, and the early church fathers.

The other option is that even if he did say " I am the way the life and the truth", this could be the equivalent of Al-Hallaj the Sufi saying " Ana Al-Haqq", in other words he perceived himself to be in communion with God. Similar comments have been made throughout Christian history as can be shown from quotations from Evelyn Underhill's classic work on mysticism. Incidentally, this was Florence Nightingale's understanding of such verses.

Correct me if i am wrong in any of what i say. At 9.12, Alex says Jesus sent the disciples in his name before his ascension. That's in John, but they are explicitly referring to the synoptics, so this doesn't make sense. Besides that, Jesus calls them to forgive others the same way he does on the sermon on the mount, so there isn't that same level of authority given to forgive sins, thus not giving them divine status. In Matthew 26:64-66, as many people refer to, the priests tore their robes off at his blasphemy. I couldn't find any other meaning of blasphemy, both greek and english, that didn't refer to misuse of language when coming to God. The 1st century Sanhedrin knew exactly what that meant (he did not deny the title 'Son of God' rather He said they were right in saying this) and so accused him of this. To refer to why he was killed, Bart I'm sure is right. His plaque by the cross read 'King of the Jews'. But the Jews who did not believe in Jesus twisted it to make it sound like He was claiming to be above Caesar, which resulted in death. The Jews still knew exactly what He claimed to be and wanted him dead for that, but couldn't charge him legally (again not 100% sure). Finally, if Jesus was not God, his sacrifice means nothing for the forgivness of sins. If Jesus was a man highly inspired by God (yet still only a man), this means that there was a way to live free of sin. Jesus came because, as Paul said, "All have fallen short" and "the wages of sin is death". Therefore humans simply cannot live the life we are expected, but Jesus came - fully God and fully human - to live a perfect life we cannot attain, and produce a better covanent as Hebrews talks of. Thus before God we stand pure and clean because of Jesus' death and resurrection, and whoever would believe this may have eternal life.

Bart’s Jesus be pulling the ol’ “I’m not saying I’m God, but have you ever seen God and Me in the same room together?” Within the synoptic’s Jesus regularly was accused of claiming to be God without refuting his accusers. He did actions not only the fulfill messianic prophecies (as Matthew is keen at pointing out) but also actions only God can do (forgiving Sins, making new commandments, removing old commandments, declaring Himself to be the Temple aka God presence with His people. He is called Emmanuel (God with us). He is worshipped without rebuking the worshipper in contrast to Angels or prophets would do not receive worship and rebuke those who attempt to worship them. The case is so robust that to deny the Gospels implications of Jesus’s deity is like winning on a technicality.

As per my information the earliest copies of the New Testament say "before Abraham, I am", later ones say " before Abraham was, I am" and modern day bibles say "before Abraham was born, I am"; thus showing how the Christians have tried to make the Bible say what they want said instead of going by what the Bible says. To me "before" in the phrase " before Abraham, I am" doesn't mean as preceding Abraham chronologically but it means "in front of" meaning "I am just like Abraham" or his mirror image, ie meaning a monotheistic just like Abraham was, especially considering that in this passage Jesus was being accused of blasphemy and so was rejecting that accusation. Bart Ehrman’s claims overlook the multiple instances where Jesus clearly, if sometimes indirectly, claimed divinity in the Gospels. For example, in John 8:58, Jesus states, “Before Abraham was, I AM.” This phrase, “I AM” (Greek: Ego Eimi), directly echoes God’s self-revelation in Exodus 3:14: “I AM WHO I AM.” Jesus’ Jewish audience immediately understood this as a claim to divinity because they picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy. Their reaction shows they recognized His statement as a divine claim, underscoring that Jesus was not using ambiguous language but was making a clear claim to be God. If Jesus was not claiming the divine name, why did His Jewish opponents try to stone Him immediately afterward? Wouldn’t they have ignored a mere teacher’s words rather than responding with accusations of blasphemy? How do you account for the repeated “I am” statements in John that align Jesus with qualities attributed to God-such as “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world”? Isn’t this an intentional claim to the same name God uses, which His audience understood as a direct assertion of divinity? Another instance is found in Mark 2:5-7, where Jesus forgives the sins of a paralytic. The scribes react by saying, “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Jesus does not correct them; instead, He affirms His authority by healing the man, thereby confirming His divine right to forgive sins. This was not merely a prophet’s authority; it was a claim to a uniquely divine prerogative, as forgiving sins was seen as something only God could do. If only God can forgive sins, why does Jesus declare forgiveness independently of the temple, sacrifices, or priestly rituals? Isn’t it significant that He bypasses the traditional Jewish system, indicating He possesses direct authority like God? If Jesus forgiving sins in Mark 2 isn’t a divine claim, why do the religious leaders accuse Him of blasphemy-something punishable by death? Wouldn't they have dismissed Him as another prophet rather than a blasphemer? Ehrman downplays the significance of the titles Jesus uses in the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). Titles like “Son of Man,” which Jesus often used to describe Himself, carry profound theological weight. In Daniel 7:13-14, the “Son of Man” is depicted as a divine figure with God’s authority and power, establishing an everlasting kingdom. By using this title, Jesus identified Himself with a figure understood to be both divine and messianic. This claim wasn’t added later; it aligns with the understanding of Jesus’ divinity in the synoptic Gospels and Paul’s letters. How would you explain Jesus referencing Daniel 7’s “Son of Man,” who is given eternal dominion and authority by God, while simultaneously identifying Himself with that figure? Isn’t this an undeniable claim of divine status? If Jesus wasn’t claiming divinity, why does the high priest in Matthew 26 tear his robes and accuse Him of blasphemy for affirming He is the “Son of Man” who will come on the clouds? Wouldn't this reaction seem overblown if Jesus was merely calling Himself a human prophet? Moreover, when asked directly if He was the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus affirms it and speaks of Himself as seated at the “right hand of Power” (Matthew 26:63-64, Mark 14:61-62). The high priest’s reaction-tearing his robes-shows that he understood Jesus’ response as a divine claim. Jesus was not vague; He identified Himself with the divine figure from Daniel 7, reinforcing His identity as God. In Matthew 12:8, Jesus says, “I am the Lord of the Sabbath.” By claiming to be “Lord of the Sabbath,” Jesus assumes a role reserved for God. The Sabbath was established by God, and the statement implies an authority over it that only the Creator could claim. Since the Sabbath was established by God as a covenant with Israel, what human could justly claim lordship over it? Isn’t Jesus, by claiming to be “Lord of the Sabbath,” implying a status equal to the One who created it? Ehrman suggests that because John’s Gospel was written later, it is the only one that explicitly portrays Jesus claiming divinity. But dismissing John’s account on the basis of its later composition overlooks its coherence with earlier traditions. John emphasizes Jesus’ divinity more explicitly, but this doesn’t contradict the synoptic Gospels; it complements them by highlighting themes that are implicitly present there as well. Given that Paul’s letters predate John and affirm Jesus’ divinity, how can it be argued that belief in Jesus’ divinity was a late addition? If Paul recognized Jesus’ divine nature, doesn’t this suggest that His followers believed in His divinity from the beginning? How would you interpret Philippians 2:6, which says that Jesus, “being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped”? Doesn’t this verse confirm that early Christians viewed Jesus as inherently divine, even before the Gospel of John was written? If the belief in Jesus’ divinity were a gradual development, why do we see explicit statements of His divine nature in early Christian writings like Philippians 2 and Colossians 2? John’s Gospel reflects the firsthand experiences of Jesus’ disciples, and the early church widely accepted it as written by one of Jesus’ closest followers. The unified message across all four Gospels-emphasizing Jesus’ unique authority, divine identity, and mission-offers a compelling cumulative case for His divinity. To claim otherwise is to ignore the harmony among the Gospels and the complementary perspectives they provide. Ehrman’s argument is largely one from silence-he assumes that because explicit statements like those in John do not appear identically in the synoptics, they must have been a later invention. However, the absence of direct language does not imply absence of belief. The synoptic Gospels contain numerous indirect claims and actions that imply divinity, as already noted. Ehrman’s claim downplays evidence in the synoptics while focusing narrowly on John. But the Gospels were written as part of a coherent narrative; their agreement on key elements, like Jesus’ divine authority and the worship He received, provides a consistent picture of Jesus’ identity. Jewish expectations for the Messiah were complex; many Jews expected a political deliverer, not a divine Savior. Jesus often communicated His identity through actions and indirect statements to challenge these preconceptions gradually. If Jesus had openly claimed to be God in a straightforward way, it would likely have led to premature opposition and hindered His mission. Instead, He revealed His identity progressively, allowing His followers to come to a fuller understanding over time. Peter’s confession of Jesus as the “Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16) shows that this understanding did develop among His followers. If Jesus never claimed to be God, why did His closest followers-those who lived, ate, and traveled with Him-so firmly proclaim His divinity, even at the cost of their lives? Could it be that their testimonies are trustworthy and that Jesus’ words, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), were indeed a revelation of His true nature? If Jesus truly performed miracles, forgave sins, received worship, and identified Himself with divine authority, could it be that He was indeed revealing His divinity in a way that would challenge and transform the world? Perhaps the real question is not whether Jesus claimed to be God, but whether we are willing to recognize the evidence of who He is.

People often say, “I’m not hurting anyone so it’s ok to sin (lying, stealing, sexual sins, disrespecting parents etc)” The same God who said to love your neighbour first said to love Him to the best of your ability.
