Sheldrake: "But have you heard the story of the rabbit and the moon? Or the cow that hopped the planets while straddling a spoon, or she who leapt the mountains while whistling up a tune and swapped her songs with swallows while riding on her broom? Now we can all learn things, both many and a few, from the old hunched up woman who lived inside a shoe. For the girl who sang by day, and by night she ate tear soup, or the man who drank too much and he got the brewers' droop." Me: I like your funny words, magic man

I love all of the references to Edward Lear's nonsense poems in the second verse! For anyone who is not familiar with his works, here's a list of the references and the poems to which they correspond: "Nobody knew and nobody knows, how the pobble was robbed of his twice five toes." A line taken directly from the poem "The Pobble Who Has No Toes" "Or how the dong came to own a luminous nose." Referring to the poem "The Dong With The Luminous Nose" (which is neither sexual nor having anything to do with Rudolph, lol) "Or how the jumblies went to sea in a sieve that they rowed, and came to shore by the chankly bore, where the bong trees grow" Referring to the poem "The Jumblies" "And the quangle wangle plays, in the rain and the snow" Referring to the poem "The Quangle Wangle's Hat" Hope this was helpful to at least someone :)

Based a dnd character of mine on this song. They're a two hundred-year old gnome druid with a multiclass into bard, who wandered the wide earth for as long as they can remember, writing down all sorts of folk stories, legends and facts. In the last 70 years, they settled down on a small farm, near a village called Carrotshore, and were known as "the weird old guy". Every night, they would stay up at a campfire, while excited kids ran up to them, giggling and asking the old man to tell them another one of their stories. And of course they did. For once, getting to share all of the contents of their notebook was priceless to them. Knowing that the stories of old would be remembered for another generation... and so passed 70 years, feeling like a blink of an eye to the old druid. The kids that they knew are now old as well, everyone knows that the druid's some sort of mage. But to this day, small kids run to the bonfire on the farm and excitedly ask for another story. Some children knew how to play some instruments. And so, together they made a song about all the wonderful things the old druid has heard. Until one day, an evil, greedy and miserable king thought that the old druid was corrupting the village's kids with magic. And then he burned the village down. As the druid watched from afar, tears streamed down their eyes. But there was no choice left now, was there? The druid wasn't all that strong. They brought fertility to the land, and warded off wild animals, but that was all that they could do. And so the druid walked away, humming an old tune that they made up with some kids. The druid walked away with their notebook, in search of new stores to write down, and a new place to settle. Holy shit i love this song to absolute bits

The meaning I find: It's simple really; we may learn a fair bit from "common knowledge" or old mill rumors, such as the idea of moss always growing north or using saltwater to care for jellyfish wounds, but that doesn't mean that fantastical stories are not valuable to learn from too. Baba Yaga, Hansel and Gretal, the Snow Queen, The Rabbit in the Moon, all of these stories and more teach us things that no facts ever could: empathy, compassion, courage, caution, and many more lessons for childhood. And the best part? Unlike commonly-known facts and home remedies, these tales don't necessarily need a "purpose"; they can simply be and teach the reader whatever moral they wish. After all, what is the main moral to the Jabberwocky? Or The Little Mermaid? Or the Cow who hopped around the Planets? _"Nobody knew and nobody knows."_ Because *_you_* are the one who decides what the moral is, what you take away from it.

I’m 6 years late... Cosmo will most likely never see this. But I’ve never heard a song in my short life that has spoken to me so much. The lyrics are so random, and some of the things it’s talking about are more intense than others, witch is what I really love about it. I can actually relate to this song, not from the lyrics but the theme. I’ve had a really bad childhood and I’ve had bad flashbacks to it, but whatever is going on in this song really helped me get over my bad past. And even though the future isn’t looking bright for me, I’ll just listen to this song, and it will motivate me to push through whatever gets thrown at me. I know all the lyrics by heart and I’ve listened to it on repeat for hours on end. It never gets old. I’ve loved this song for almost a year and every time I listen to it, it gets better. It also gives me inspirations for my novel series that I’m working hard on... and the chaotic and sad things that happen tie to this song well. Whenever I hear it I can imagine the characters fighting or a traveling or talking or a really sad sene. Idk, I’m probably insane. I love this song. I’ve listened to all your songs. Can’t stop listening to it. I’ve also heard the demo version. It also speaks to me a lot too. Thank you.

The memory I'm talking about is so distant it's silent. I just remember my mother holding my hand and the fact she was reading to me while I was just staring out the window at a bright full moon. That memory is one of my clearest and is definitely my oldest. I don't know why I remember it so well, but I do.

The meaning. I think I got it. So the song starts with "legends", which in this case are sayings that grow increasingly scientific in nature: we go from the may-or-may-not be true sayings that "moss grows on the north side of the trees" and "when the rain comes down all the worms come up to breathe" to descriptions of photosynthesis and the Earth's tilted axis. Now, these are things that have practical value. They explain how to find you way in the woods and how the world works. The increasing focus on the scientific represents how humanity has come to value reason more than most anything else. But then the chorus challenges the idea that the scientific or reasonable is the only thing of value. The chorus is a plethora of references to different folk stories and nursery rhymes, some of which at one point had practical value but now all can be classified as ridiculous yet entertaining myths. While these stories may not be "practical" in the same way that knowledge of photosynthesis is, they still have worth because they teach morals, a willingness to sometimes accept things that don't make sense, and culture. The referenced myths actually come from several different cultures, thus indicating that studying these stories helps us to connect to other people. I think the singer is right: "we can all learn things, both many and a few", from a mother goose nursery rhyme, a modern folk take, or even an old wives' tale about erectile disfunction (look up "Brewer's Droop" - or rather, don't). The point is, this song is about appreciating the old myths and stories that shaped who we are as people and as our respective culture, because those things are just as important as the sciences that help us understand the natural world. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I feel like this song was written for people who suffer from existential crisis like me I learned too much about the universe and how all atoms will one day be unable to keep together and how all light will disappear forever. And it will happen, I kind of lost my will to live But when I found this song it made me realize something. When the song starts it talks about facts like the moss growing on the north side of trees, the world spinning on an axis of 23 degrees and the like in a slow and accepting way. But when the second part hits, he sings in an energetic and happy way about such unrealisticly abstract stuff like a cow jumping from planet to planet while strandling a spoon. As I heard those lines I kinda started laughing while tearing up, it reminded me of myself, looking at the far bigger picture instead of just zooming in and enjoyin my life. This song cured my existential crisis

It’s interesting how he calls facts “legends,” while he goes on to explain nursery rhymes and poems as “stories.” Like, photosynthesis and the world spinning round on an axis of 23 degrees start as “legend has it,” as if they’re just mystical phenomenon that no one cares about. But all the nursery rhymes and poems begin with “But have you heard about the story of...” as if they’re actual events that are more important. It’s incredible how he managed to invoke that sense of childlike wonder by entertaining the thought that seemingly nonsense stories take priority over basic facts, kind of how a kid would imagine it. Edit: Guys I know the facts aren’t exactly correct. It doesn’t change much about the meaning. In fact, it adds to my theory that this takes place from the perspective of a child. A child wouldn’t know the exact details about these facts (how the moss doesn’t always grow on the north side of trees, the axis is technically 23.5 degrees, etc.) they would just know the basics of what adults told them.

Legend has it that the moss grows on The north side of the trees Well, legend has it when the rain comes down All the worms come up to breathe Well, legend has it when the sunbeams come All the plants, they eat them with their leaves Well, legend has it that the world spins round On an axis of 23 degrees But have you heard the story of the rabbit in the moon? Or the cow that hopped the planets while straddling a spoon Or she, who leapt up mountains, while whistling up a tune And swapped her songs with swallows while riding on a broom Well, we can all learn things, both many and a-few From that old hunched-up woman who lived inside a shoe Or the girl that sang by day and by night she ate tear soup Or the man who drank too much and he got the brewers’ droop Come listen, all ye fair maids, to how the moral goes Nobody knew and nobody knows How the Pobble was robbed of his twice five toes Or how the Dong came to own a luminous nose Or how the Jumblies went to sea in a sieve that they rowed And came to shore by the Chankly Bore where the Bong-trees grow Where the Jabberwocky’s small green tentacles do flow And the Quangle Wangle plays in the rain and the snow But have you heard the story of the rabbit in the moon? Or the cow that hopped the planets while straddling a spoon Or she, who leapt up mountains, while whistling up a tune And swapped her songs with swallows while riding on a broom Well, we can all learn things, both many and a-few From that old hunched-up woman who lived inside a shoe Or the girl that sang by day and by night she ate tear soup Or the man who drank too much and he got the brewers’ droop Legend has it that the moss grows on The north side of the trees Well, legend has it when the rain comes down All the worms come up to breathe Well, legend has it when the sunbeams come All the plants, they eat them with their leaves Well, legend has it that the world spins round On an axis of 23 degrees But have you heard the story of the rabbit in the moon? Cosmo's songs just have this touch to them. They are wholesome, and when you hear it, you just immediately know it is his song. His songs tell entire stories and yet it doesn't sound crammed or rushed. When listening to most of his songs, it is as if I can hear his opinions on life. I know it sounds wierd, but when a song tells me that much about a person, I immediately love it.

This song makes me think of a weird ass dream I had: *I was by this weird abandoned building and I was really sad and there was this black cat and yellow snake who were talking in whispers until the cat took me somewhere in the woods. It was grey and cloudy, I couldn't tell exactly what time it was. He took me to this weird ledge that had a rectangle pool of water a ways down and told me to jump into it. I told him that I knew something was going to go wrong and he hesitated, then after that we just laid on the ground and talked.* Also, the water was black.

I think the cat was trying to tempt u to do something, and that going into the pool would’ve hurt u in some way but when u refused he decided not to, snakes in general have a bad rep often being seen as untrustworthy and slippery, it’s also a symbol of the devil, but they represent change flexibility and growth yellow snakes in particular symbolise wisdom and intellect ( this could link back to u not taking a rash decision) black cats are commonly seen as very spiritual and very bad luck, I think those two talking where either conspiring against u( bc of both the black cats and snakes bad rep) or it was symbolising your good and bad luck/fortune/maybe it was your guardian angel and the devil (snake as good as that’s its actual symbol and cat as bad) not being able to tell the time could also be that the cat was trying to trick or mislead u, im very sure that dreams can sometimes be dangerous as I’ve suffered consequences from dreams before and I think u where very smart to not do as the cat told u

I don't think I've ever seen an animal in my dreams, I remember I "met" My dead grandma, I've never met her but we talked and hugged then the dream ended, you know like an Anime. One time I was walking to the store with my family but got lost and I met some random kids (about 4 or 3, I think their were like 2 boys and like 1 girl or 2), they were nice and fun to play with, I played tag and the building around us looked like old buildings and their was a bridge than was above us and had 2 staircase up to it and we ran around a lot then when it turned dawn I said goodbye and went to my family(I don't remember if they were worried or not, I think they scolded me but let me off the hook) and went home. One time me and my brother heard an ice cream truck and we got my money and ran out but we saw some kids that were doing something and we ran to them to check what's up but then we were teleported(or something) to a weird place that was really bright with a light yellow backround all over and a bunch of tiles that were different colors when we walked on a tile we would travel through different universes on each tile, there was a universe where we didn't exist or school was a store or where we replaced the "us" in one of the universes and it ended when we left the last universe. One dream i was at school and it was burning down and while it burns my brothers house that I lived in was burning too I think. So when I got home I decided to run away for whatever reason since I could live in my parents house but after I was tired I saw a shady neighborhood and went to it (it was in a circle with one road that lead to it and another neirborhood). After trying to talk to people I knew they didn't like me so I went away and somehow ended up in a military-like-place and I met the people who were going to my school that somehow got repaired fast and I met this boy in a group who was my grade and told him the school could burn down easily and said to be careful and he trusted me for some reason and I watched as he went out of the military place then the dream ended. One dream there was a zombie apocalypse in my school, one dream I died being shot in the back my a crossbow, one dream I turned into a zombie, one dream my family turned into black shadows that were scary, one dream my old art teacher got bitten by a zombie and she bit my left leg near the knee, one dream I was kidnapped by a crazy man who took people eyes and organs into a jar and their was a group of people including me who escaped. One dream there was a place we had to go to or else we would be killed in random ways but when we would go to the place we could still die from the lady that ate us or stabbed us or clawed us to death, I lived but nearly died. One dream i died and became ghost who could communicate with my family. And I can't remember anymore dreams right now. Edit:I guess my dreams represent that I'm lonely or something and that I'm scared to die and to be forgotten.

Has anyone mentioned Over the Garden Wall? There's a woodcutter with his daughter's soul in a lantern, a woman giving her life energy to her father, an old-fashioned schoolhouse taught by a human but the kids are animal-people, and there's a wendigo monster who captures kids and deprives them of energy then turns them into trees!!! Interesting to note-at first glance, it seems like all the “legends” he mentions are real facts. But if you look more closely, they’re not technically correct. Moss doesn’t always grow on the north side of trees, worms can breathe underground during rain and dont need to come up to breathe, plants don’t eat sun with their leaves (if you want to get particular, they use the energy to fuel production of food, which they then consume in a completely different process), and the earth’s axial tilt is 23.5° and it doesn’t really “spin around on” that axis (it’s not incorrect, just a mischaracterization). Minor details. Not saying it means anything, just find it interesting.
@danmakuexpress8229
@danmakuexpress8229 4 жыл бұрын
On one hand, it could the fact that the song follows themes of learning. So, it makes sense that the person retelling these stories with fantastical themes would start off learning facts with sparse details, while being well-versed in fantasy related stories. On the other hand, it could literally just be that it would make the song really dragged out if he included a lot more details within each individual fact. After all, "the earth spinning around on an axis of 23.5 degrees, with minor fluctuations depending on conditions" is a lot less catchy than "the earth spinning around on an axis of 23 degrees".
