Yep You're right Mick - someone has definitely been in there and Aspen 4T is definitely the way to go unless you want to constantly clean out carbs due to Benzene etc

My wooden shed is 16x10 foot. Diesel heater brings the temperature from 4'C to 24'C within an hour. Shed has about 14 aquariums in it. The heater gives off a dry heat so the humidity level drops the more you use it. 2 hours of use and the humidity drops from 65 to 45 . Lovely dry warm area. I can start the heater from the house using the remote. Great bit of kit.

Forgot to mention Mick. Place your air intake for the burn chamber (not the big intake for the heat exchanger) to the outside of the building. Colder air makes a cleaner burn and results in a cleaner more efficient burn of the diesel. The warmer the air becomes inside, the less dense the air enters the burn chamber. Basic physics :) Warmer air expands in volume, colder air contracts and becomes denser.

That's brilliant! I wouldn't worry about heat transfer from the exhaust, if you've triple wrapped it that'll be more than enough, it's advisable to soak it in water before you apply it as it keeps the irritant dust to a minimum and helps to form it to shape, you might find it will go stiff after a while but it's supposed to so don't worry, I covered the header pipes on my trike with it and you could touch the pipes without getting burned it was that good. Can I hear it? Yes but it doesn't distract any more than a fan would in summer, it's fine, air intake you can take from anywhere not necessarily outside, it's the exhaust that's the worry and you've covered that, the only addition I'd suggest would be a bit of mesh on the outside to stop rodents getting in when it's not in use as they will make it home if you give them a chance.

dont soak the titanium exaust wrsap its not measnt to be soaked only the black exhaust wrap and I think you have the titanium wrap on yours.

I used a bean can for through the wall lol. I wrapped the exhaust in exhaust wrap, then wrapped some rockwool type insulation over the exhaust wrap and shoved it into the bean can. The bean can gets only luke warm on full blast.

That may turn out not to be the case. Carbon DIOXIDE is heavier than air, carbon MONOXIDE is largely neutral buoyancy in air.

I thought this for years and then found out this is an old wives tale. Carbon monoxide disapates equally around a room and does not pool at ground level.

Fascinating device, I think some of them can do a manual pump prime if you hold down the UP and DOWN buttons for a while.

If you only wrap the exhaust where it may cause an overheating issue, some of the 400 degree temperature of the exhaust will radiate into the room. I bought a 4 foot extension pipe for that specific reason.

Buy yourself a UPS from Amazon or ebay and plug your power supply into that. If you have a power cut, the ups will supply the heater long enough for you to cycle it down safely. I have an APC UPS on mine. :)

I CANNOT recommend this comment enough. These units have the electronic management system bolted directly onto the heat exchanger and if the power fails they will cook the electronics in very short order. Get yourself a small 12v bike battery and a trickle charger and run it like that, if the mains fail, you'll have enough power to run through the correct shutdown procedure, thus saving the unit.

@@iandennis7836 Correct Ian, I hear lots of comments of "if it doesn't shut down correctly then the chamber will soot up with carbon and damage the heat exchanger". The heat exchanger can be de-carbonised, it's the least of your worries. Once the mainboard is cooked, it's kaput and the unit is bricked.

@@themowerman Do a quick search on ebay for APC UPS You don't need to buy a new one. Make sure it comes with a battery (the batteries are relatively inexpensive anyway). An ES700 would be a good starter :)

Nice install Mick and i have never seen one of these heaters but it looks like it will do an awesome job to keep you warm this winter. We have an old fashioned wall mounted natural gas furnace in the back storage area of the garage and use a small fan to direct the heat into the shop area. I leave it on all winter but turn it down slightly at night after we finish up working.

Great helpful video, very helpful. I have just installed one of these for my son's house 2 days ago ( His place is all electric with no gas supply! ) . It has to work out cheaper than his electric heaters. We are having a few problems with the heat from the exhaust but have some exhaust heat tape on order.

I fitted a cab heater (Eberspacher) in my workshop over 25 years ago as we had them in a fleet of trucks, before the cheap versions were available. I think you will find that your quote that running 8 hours on 100 to 150 ml is incorrect. The pumps deliver .02ml per stroke on the low setting the pump runs at 2 Hz (Hertz) low heat setting which equates to 146ml / hour. On high heat output the pump runs at 5.5 Hz thereby delivering 396 ml / hour.

As a really crude rule of thumb, you can get around 10 KWH per litre from diesel. If you allow for some heat being wated in exhaust heat etc, then you could perhaps have a working basis of about 9KWH of heat for the workshop per litre of fuel - but for really crude "bag of fag packet calcualtions" work on 100ml = 1 KWH of heat If the heater is giving 5KWH of energy out, it will use about 500ml per hour. If you are using less diesel than this, then the unuit is NOT generating 5KW of energy but perhaps somewhat less. (I have heard a few folks say that the 5KW units typically operate around 4KW true output - more than enough for almost everyone, but as always, a slight economy of truth with the figures from our friends in China. They ARE fantastic heaters though - no denying it - but their claims for energy output for consumption do need to be taken with a pinch of salt as they start to defy laws of thermodynamics :) Very roughly - 1 KW for 1 hour will use about 100ml

You can take the top and bottom off a can of (beans,) to line the hole if you are worried about heat transfer, and to maintain gap in the wall.

It would appear that your exhaust pipe has been circumcised at the point it exits the outer wall of your shed. Is that a practice you would suggest? We do something similar here in the States with hogs, involving something similar to what you call "jubilee clips." We call them hose clamps, but obviously we're not as colorful a people as our brothers in the UK. All in all, excellent presentation and very useful info. Thank you, Mick!

Thanks for all the vids Mick, been a great help. After spending the last 20 years looking after all my own small engines up here in Lincolnshire I've now ended up servicing/fixing my neighbours machines and thinking on fixing and selling a few mowers, push, self propelled and riders, got a few machines for free or pennies locally, but would love to find out what generally is worth fixing to oily rag working condition and what would be worth restoring. Currently got all sorts from 1957 Allen Scythe running sweet as a nut and ready to take toes in the spring!, 1972 Webb 18" Cylinder with a 2hp Briggs good runner and seems to have been fully serviced before lay up, mid 70's Honda Rotavator (G50 engine) fighting me all the way! to a few more modern rotary's and a couple of riders. I'm guessing just try the local market for the vintage stuff and treat the more modern as a fix up and flog as a cheap working machines. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Still got me Uncle Fred's Mountfield M1Gardener from 1982 where the engine(Briggs 3 1/2 Classic) and cradle dismounts from the rotovator to a rotary mower, never seen another one, have you? By the way I have two 5kw diesel heaters on the way so will see how good they are heating the workshop, might try them on heating oil as well as red diesel to see what the output difference is.

lots of people have them heating their house not just a shed or garage, Ive got a 2 kw diesel heater mounted on my driveway wall in a custom built cabinet and it keeps my house a nice toasty 20 degrees C all day long, it burns about 2 litres of diesel a day, if you wanna run a 5 kw at full chat all day long your lookinbg at burning about 3 to 4 lires a day. on low probably about 600 ml. the 2 kw costs me about 3 quid a day to run but my 32 kw gas boiler will eat £12.00 a day in gas. as dacia say you do the math. if I can save 9 quid a day im all in and energy bills are going up again on 1st of January and again in spring.

two empty bean cans with the exhaust diameter hole drilled in the middle one can inside the other to form a tube with the holes at each end would insulate transfer of heat thru the wooden wall hole cutter the same diameter as bean cans easy removal when maintenance needed no screws needed keep the air intake inside recycle the warm air not the outside cold air cheaper with more heat {:-) PAV UK

Hey Mick, Thank you so much for doing these videos. I'm looking,ing to do the same in our conservatory as we have brought a full size pool table. I do have a few worries though. I used to heat my garage with an electric heater. I noticed due to the hot and cold changes the condensation was terrible. All my tools which were not in a drawer or in their box, rusted. Do you think the same thing wi.l happen with the diesel heater? I'm sure it will help that your shed is insulated. Also with it being in the house, do you think, I should spend a little more and get something a little easier on the eye. Not that yours is ugly just thinking about my beautiful wife! A few more suggestions Mick. You can buy a Bluetooth version for about £ 100-120, which you can control from your phone anywhere. Also, you can buy a through hull fitting to give you a safe outlet for the exhaust. It makes for a more professional neater job. Don't buy Diesel from the garage. You can buy Red Diesel for them, it's cheaper and legal. Also, turn your inline filter around, you have it on the wrong way. Enjoy Mick.

its only legal for home heating red diesel, burning it for business use is illegal. you have to use bio diesel instead. I'd run it on road diesel for a bit and keep my ear to the ground on what the neighbours do, if no reaction or complaints look for some red if not add a little chocolate or banana scented 2 stroke oil and keep using pump diesel your still gonna save a small fortune not using an electric convector heater or decent sized parrafin heater.

if you dial it back to a comfortable temp the internal thermostat will ramp up and down to keep that temp before shutdown ramp it up to FULL POWER for 5 to ten minutes to burn any carbon ie soot off should have no probs from each use {:-) PAV UK

To prime it, supply power but leave the unit off, hold the up and down arrow buttons on the controller, the ones above and below the on switch. To tune the pump rate and the fan speed for efficient burn, press the top left hand button till it displays 4 dashes. Using the arrow keys, enter 1688 , you can then manually set the pump squirts per second and the minimum and maximum fan speeds. Note, eith each change, you may have to adjust it by sinhle increments and then wait for it to adjust. This may require re entering the menu with the code. You want the fan on full, and lower the top feed rate so the heat bar drops to smaller red, then raise it by 0.1 at a time untill you get all the bars, then select the lowest fan speed and turn it down untill you cant feel any air coming out of the outlet, then turn it back up untill theres a slow but definate air flow coming out. Then tune the lowest fuel rate at this new lowest fan speed, again by lowering the hz until the last heat bar goes off, then back up by 0.1 at a time until you have full heat bars. This will use the minimum fuel to provide full heat at the minimum and maximum air flow. The heat settings of 1 to 5 now adjust within the set range. Prime the pump only to the fuel filter and start the heater on 2. This shortens the start time so you use less amps so you save a bit of electric in the starting phase. Hope that helps. I have to agree and been told I can use red diesel for my heater. I have only tried one garage but when I got there the garage refused to sell it! They also said you have to fill out paperwork for it and they did not have time to look for the paperwork! I ended up buying 4 ltrs of normal diesel. I'll be trying a different garage, for red diesel, in the next few days.

What I'm curious about is these things. 1. How long, what you find, that a tank last? 2. Total of everything you bought for it? 3. How long does it take to warm your shed to a comfortable work environment? 4. We all know it's cheaper then electricity, but in the long term how much? 5. Is there any odor, like a kerosene heater. 6. Does the machine itself heat up? Most of those questions will take time to answer mate, so take your time, we all want to know, thank you.

I may be able to help you on this, my heater on an average cool time will use about 1L in about 16 hours of use. Just recently when it was minus 6C it had used 2L. It depends on your comfort level, I like a room at no more than 16c At the moment it's minus 2 outside, was 6c inside and in after maybe 30 mins it's my room is at 13c, it maybe an 8m x 8m room never measured it, the exhaust going out of an open window. A 2.75kw heater can do the job but takes longer to warm up but can maintain the comfort level, if the heater takes about 2 hours this can be 5kwh used on electricity to get to the heat level when it starts to regulate, now depending on how often the heater needs to turn on/off will depend wildly but let's say its on 25% of the rest 16 hours, that's 4 hours worth at 2.75kw, so in total its 6hours at 2.75 that's 16.5kwh, if you paying 40p per kwh then that's £6.60 for the 18 hours use, if my diesel heater used 1L, then you can work out the price, less than £2.00. Hidden cost, the glow plug uses 8amps off the power supply for the few minutes of starting up, otherwise its just the fan that needs electricity to power it, almost nothing worth writing home about. You can get a full setup off ebay for about £150, that's a 10L tank, pipes, fittings and even a remote control, the fully built in unit like mick has will cost a little more and have only a 5L tank. I have the smell of diesel when the wind blows the exhaust fumes back into my open window, mick won't have exhaust fumes from his heater however dealing with diesel fuel can cause a smell when spilled. Hope this helps

I am doing a more accurate test at the moment on the supposed 8Kw, supposed to be exact same machine 5Kw!. First use on 3 setting full tank around 6 ltrs lasted about 17 hours taking from 1-2 degrees to 15 degrees in about 1 1/2 hours. Takes at 5 degrees 1 1/2 hours to reach 19 degrees in a 12x8 with help of an oil filled rad. Accurate US tests running on highest 6 rate at 12 - 14 hrs but thats yank gallon. Cost £81 delivered, exactly the same as above mid November, a customer return and had a new ignition sent and refunded £16 for the hassle =£65 cost.

I've got one in my static, 28 X 10. I wouldn't say it's powerful enough to warm the whole thing but it does make a big difference, i think I'd need 2 to be comfortable. I run mine on full whack for an hour before getting up which makes it bearable then run it on low as an assist to the gas fire, only had it for a couple of weeks but wouldn't be without it now.

Definitely thinking about getting one of these in my garage once I’ve finished insulating it. And I’m glad I’m blind, just a thought about it you wearing a thong on a live stream sounds pretty scary.. And can you just check the temperature at ceiling? I am going to fit a extractor fan bathroom with eight runs from the top of the ceiling back down to the bottom of the shed to pull the heat from the top to the bottom or a fan, so it’s the lights the heat around.

@@themowerman that’s good, I can’t read braille thank God for that sounds like a great bit of kit. But would definitely try to recycle the hot air around my garage in fans or extractor to pull the air from the top and put it back to the bottom.

Great job Mick. Yes you can hear the heater but only a hum in the background which in my opinion is fine. As for the thong NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Is it really cheap? Compared with an electric heater yes, but compared with gas absolutely not. Be careful what you recommend this for!

I used to use a calor gas heater, yes it's cheaper, my diesel heater on average used about 1L for 16-18 hours, if you find out how much "energy" in kW per weight, then you can work out how much heat the calor fire provides you can work out how much time is in your bottle 7/12/15kg etc currently my local stockist sells the 12kg for £43. I will admit when it was really cold the other day at minus 6 my heater did use about 2L

It is cheap.. compared to the heating I had before.. can't really use a gas one here with petrol in the workshop..

Much cheaper than bottled gas and without the condensation that open gas heaters cause. Condensation is a particular problem when everything in the shed is below zero and you fire up a gas heater, literally dripping in minutes. On red diesel@ £1.20 these cost £0.15 per kWh or £0.21 per kWh on white diesel. So if you can find red locally it's half the cost of electricity.
