More than 14,000 landlords started court proceedings to evict tenants from their properties between October and December 2021, according to the Ministry of Justice.
A ban on evictions was put in place during the pandemic to protect vulnerable tenants but those measures were lifted last summer.

Not in months, I already ended my contract in Dec. Small flat, expensive rent, wanna increase the rent for extra £50 per month for a student flat, it’s almost end of Feb and still not got my deposit back, landlord is trying to get as much as she can. Charged me for loose chair legs which I never found it loose when I was living there for 4 years; charge me rubbish removal fee for a lamp which is already there when I moved in, sent her a picture of the flat when I moved in and she shut her mouth, no apologies and act it never happened. I never paid my rent late and even hired a cleaning team before move out. Property agent is on her side. Shame on them. And she owns min 10 flats on the same street. Asked my neighbours, and they’re moving out as well. Earning big money from low income students, sounds great isn’t it.

@@rayclam8079 sadly Ray, studies have found that rent control does not work. They found in some rent controlled areas landlords stop renting their properties out causing housing shortages and increasing demand. Other findings were that landlords find loopholes in legislation (like property renovations to increase rent) which pass on the previous years losses to new tenants. Your idea on on banning foreign realestate speculation is a better place to begin.

The problems with rent control could be countered by huge taxation on empty properties and better eviction protection laws. Or to just confiscate homes from people who own more than two or make it illegal to own a second home unless it's being used.

I received a 20.5% increase to my rent for 2022, I thought about it, asked for better fixtures in the home to compensate, the landlord thought that was a threat! No threat there and clearly nothing was going to change or be maintained for the extra rent, so I moved out. The rest of the tenants (4 of us) heard the story and were disgusted how a good tenant was being treated, so they all moved out too. Now a 5-bedroom, 2-storey house lies empty. Ads are still up online but the house needs work and asking big money. I now live in a car for two months, haven't had any knocks on the windows, will be happy to share my story with any council officer or police officer as to why I'm outside sleeping in my car.

legal requirements for private landlords for profit should be required by law to make rents as affordable as possible... Rental priceless are ridiculous, mortgage rates are so much cheaper, even half the price!!!! because people cannot get on the ladder they are exploited, capitolism in the UK is real!! landlords should be restricted to how many homes they can own, and rent out at a percentage of the Area mortgage rates!! it's pure financiering they have more money, and homes are less available to buy so they rent out and exploit the housing market!!!

We reached stage when houses can be 3D printed. It can take 48 hours for a house to be built (Literally). It's governmental fault (particularly those that create the legislation and policies, as individuals are supposed to be held accountable). All across Europe and North America the houses have skyrocketed as like it's a plan. Housing should not be commodity. Housing should be a human right. People positioned to run governments are the issue. They are not the solution to issues. The current policies also lead to low birth rate and increasingly ageing population with the median age being around 40 years or more. Migration of young people can not be long-term solution to stimulate balance and also expand on opportunities for market diversification within capitalism. The current model is ineffective and stagnates way too much. This can be equal to genocide (legal national genocide). This is insane.

Ban on evictions should be bought in again, at least for the duration of the cost of living crisis.

As long as the lease is expiring, what's the issue? Presumably no one is going to suggest that if a landlord rents a house out at some point, he is obligated to keep renting it out forever? And it works both ways. Tenants who finish out the lease shouldn't be faulted if they don't renew.

We've known this for years. How strange that only now BJ looks like he's going to resign do the media start talking about these things.

there's always a diversion. just the other day they were talking about afghanistan and the taliban. The media never once during that time talked about Bush, Howard and Blair who were the ones that started all that crap 20 years ago.

As a single mother and widow I cannot even afford to live in the UK, I go over to work in the UK and then head back to South Africa where I can just afford to rent, pay for food and other expenses.
