My dad was stationed in Guam in the early 80s. Lived on base (South Tipalao) and went to Agat Elementary (Kinder) and Harry S Truman (Elementary). I still have family over there but haven't been back since. I miss how you can go around the island in a day; hope to go back someday.

Love your channel.. I used to live in Guam back in the late 80s. And the prices back then was way cheaper. Back to the US, prices here has been sky high as well. Plenty of jobs in Guam back then, hope still a lot of jobs opportunities these days. I love it there.

Chamorro here and permanent resident Visa holder living permanently in The Philippines. Here in the Phils, it is very common to enter a private business and shopping center/Mall with armed guards/hand held metal detectors, checking everybody’s personal bags upon entering. I find this security procedure effective to keep everybody honest and prevent peeps from bringing fire arms inside the establishments.

As their policy for security purpose, it would be okay for bags to be searched at the entrance of the store, (same way they do to everybody when entering malls or casinos in the Philippines) but not to search inside the store without probable cause.

I understand your frustration; I wouldn’t want my bag searched in front of everyone either, as it can feel like being treated as if I did something wrong. However, policies and laws are different matters. As a private business, they have the right to set and enforce their own policies, including hiring security to implement them.police officers need probable cause to conduct a search, but as a customer choosing to enter their business, you agree to abide by their policies. If you’re uncomfortable with this, you always have the option to shop elsewhere.

First of all, thank you for your comment. I wonder if this is just a Japanese business practice, because never have I been subjected to this in any American business e.g. Kmart, Ross, Walmart, Home Depot etc... As a young teen I was caught shoplifting at a Raley's supermarket. Security saw me through second story surveillance mirror windows. They apprehended me and I had to call my parents. Thing is they witnessed/saw the act that warranted the search. Here at Donki they can search you at a whim notice without reason. Go through your "Personal property" simply because you are in their establishment. In other words, I have to leave my right to privacy at the door, to shop and give them my money. If this is store policy, I wished I was aware of it earlier, because I would have never entered - they just lost a customer. Donki will not succeed on Guam unless that policy is changed. This policy is so alien to us locals/ Americans. I sincerely thank you for this healthy debate, it is what I was asking for. I wish more would chime in.

Wow. Looks all different. I lived on Guam in 1975-76 as an 11/12 yr old (61 now). My step-dad had been hired by Mark Pangalinan (probably butchered the name) to run the new Ben Franklin Store at the time. 7th grade was in Yigo - the Junior High there? We lived in Dededo and then in the summer we moved to a different house and I was registered in a new school, I can't remember the village name now) but then Super-Typhoon Pam came along and waxed everything. it was all a very interesting experience as a boy. We left back to stateside about 2 months after that and electricity was still weeks away from being restored. When we were there, I remember there was Carnation powdered milk or the cans of sweetened-condensed milk (that was very expensive) but at the time I wasn't paying attention much to prices, I'm sure it was expensive then too. While we were there fresh milk was started from a dairy on one of the other islands. I had some good friends in school and I thought the girls were all beautiful. LOL. I saw a recent image that Ben Franklin Store is closed/vacant now. At the time, it was the big, gleaming building in the area when it was brand-new, looks small now. Such memories! I'm sorry it is very expensive there, I'm sure like Hawaii and Alaska, most everything needs to be shipped or air-freighted there.

Typhoon Pamela, I heard was the worse to hit Guam, because after hitting Guam it made a U turn and hit it again. I believe the Yigo Jr. High is now FB Leon Guerrero Middle school, and Benfranklin is now Docomo Pacific, a Japanese phone company. So much has changed since. We had moved to Guam from Homestead, FL (south of Miami) so the weather was pretty similar (Homestead later got destroyed by Huricane Andrew in the early '90's.) We had 2 earthquakes there on Guam too! One was 6.5 and the other 6.75. It was wild seeing the house walls like wave back and forth! I don't recall Typhoon Pam backtracking. There was a super typhoon that was a couple of months before but it wasn't a direct hit, it brushed by a couple hundred miles off. But Pam was HUGE, slow (8-9 mph) and we felt it for days before ad days after. Luckily the houses we lived in were both reinforced concrete so they stood. It was wild going outside as the eye came over, everything was perfectly calm and quiet...This was all for a half hour or so, then, back inside, nail the doors shut again. After the quakes and the storms, mom had had enough and wanted to go back stateside. It is a beautiful island though!

Maybe so. But not on Guam or any other stores I’ve been to in the mainland. Up coming video will prove it. If there is a reason, probability, or any action by the customer to warrant such a search e.g. putting something in his bag, shoving something under his shirt, yes. According to security supervisor and comments, Donki can search for whatever reason or for no reason at all. A security guard can search your bag in a retail store if you give them your consent, but they can't search you without your consent. Security guards generally need your consent to search your bag. You can say no and they cannot force you to search you or surrender your bag. However, it may be a condition of entry that bags be searched on entry or exit. Store owners have the right to check customers' and employees' bags to prevent theft and minimize stock loss. However, They must clearly display a sign at the store entrance that states that customers' bags will be searched

Hello Linda. Donki is the newest to open, just this year. Kmart was in the early 90’s. Cost-U-Less in the late 80’s or early 90’s. 7 Day Supermarket in the 2010’s not sure. Payless is by far the oldest. It’s locally owned, I believe it opened in the 70’s, possibly earlier. Trump said he’s going to brings down inflation. Take care in Texas, and Hafa Adai from Guam 🇬🇺

Actually, many places in Asia “shopping centers”, before entering the shopping center, consumers’ bags are security checked for any concealed weapons before entering the shopping centers or shops. This has been a common practice in Asia after the take down of the twin towers in New York. I actually feel safer shopping in crowded places with this type of security in place. Btw, they do the same at the Donki store in Bangkok. Better to be safe than to regret not having any safety net. Great video, love it.

If the searching/inspection is done at the entrance of the store or before entering the store, it's ok ... otherwise if you are already inside the store and inspected randomly, it's not, unless there is probable cause. Also the inspection should be done by the security guard discreetly, without exposing to the public the personal items or what's inside the bag, unless it is an illegal item.

In the Philippines it is common policy that before you enter the mall or supermarket, the guard will have to check your bags, they have a stick to just check it. They don't touch the bags. Then that's it you can go in

Prim, on the real my friend and I went there like 3:30 in the morning and I swear we were the only 2 plus like 5 employees. Anyways I carry a pouch across my chest and I always wear dark jackets with the hood so as we were leaving this young guy same spot where that security guard is at Stopped me and literally said " They caught me stealing " but I said fook I ain't that type of person then he goes " Yes sir we caught you stealing, stealing my Heart ", I was like wtf kinda store is this!! 😂🤦🏻‍♂ Anyways ya I think they do that only to the Chronic Hours shoppers cus nothing else to do nai!! 😂🤣🤦🏻‍♂🤙🏽

Just so we’re clear, to search a persons bag, they’d have to wait until the person steps outside the store to actually search their bags and say that they’re stealing items from the store. Yes, even though you see them put items in their bags, it wouldn’t be considered stealing until you actually see them walk out the store. Its wrong to search and accuse in the store bc they could use that against them and say something else like “ I was holding it in my bag bc I got tired holding the items in my hand “ 💀🤣 YES ! THIS IS A THING ! secondly, they can’t just blindly accuse somebody bc of the way they look or how oddly suspicious they act. It’s considered under discrimination and that would be a mistake on their end when someone else get searched like that and be sued. By store policy pending on where you are at, yes bag searches are not illegal.. but small bags and pouches wouldn’t be considered “ searchable “ just because it’s small and could only fit wallets.. so makes no sense to search on small bags, it would only be big backpacks.

That is so BS! I always shop at Donki with a pouch/sachel (larger than what your friend has and I never got searched). From my understanding, those searches were unwarranted for sure. They probably judged your friend for his appearance because I know for a fact other people would not get searched there. If you can get the full legal policy hand print stating their claims then we can see if they have legal probable clause. To be fair though, I never shop late at night there so I would not know if their store policies differs from regular traffic hours.

I would agree that any retail establishment has the right to establish their in-store policy to prevent shrink. It's becoming increasingly common everywhere. If you don't like the policy, then don't shop there.

I felt the same way. After reading the comments, I learned security was not at fault. They were doing their job in accordance to store policy. It’s the policy - it’s so unAmerican - I don’t agree with it, therefore I will no longer shop there. And yes, they did detain Gunter, which really frustrated me. Thanks for the info. While some things may seem cheaper here, if you look at the whole picture, it’s not - due to minimum wage differences. $15 is high compared to Guam’s $9.25. Eggs are sold in packs of 10 - 1.60usd. Block of tofu is 30 cents at my favorite - Lamu grocery chain. Bot 6 bananas from the Philippines for 55cents on Monday, etc. . Yes, I can remember when Japan was crazy expensive, but now it's a fire sale. However, for people getting paid in jpy, things haven't changed hardly at all for 35 years!

They do have some good paying jobs, but those are mostly taken through nepotism or family connections, or what we call the “Parr/Friend system”. But If you are a skilled worker with experience, you won’t have any problems finding work that pays decent. Minimum wage here is $9.25, plenty of those job’s around though.

Yes, if in fact it is their policy then they have the right. This is a Japanese business and I'm not familiar with their practice. But I'm very familiar with American business, and never have I witness this being practiced. Not at Home depot, Safeway, Payless, Ross, etc...if it was, they always had a witness, they always had a reason. Donki don't need one, they can search you just for the heck of it - Lol. Because I'm now aware of their policy, I won't be going back to Donki, and if they continue to enforce this policy, Donki won't survive on Guam. Even if I don’t agree with Donki search bag policy, they are a private business and have a right to enforce policies and refuse service to anyone unless they are discriminating under federal and local laws. Just have them search your bags, it only takes a few seconds. No big deal. Edit 1: I think places that enforces said policy should post clear visible signage upon exit so there’s no drama.

Unless you're making 6 figures don't even consider living in Guam. We visit Guam with my asawa from the Philippines. Has beautiful beaches and nice shopping areas, lots of Korean tourist. However housing cost is insane. Many people need to go to the mainland for medical services. Their product distribution system is all from America as opposed to direct trade from the Philippines or Japan and product cost is severely. inflated. The roads are very good and Toyota Tacomas the vehicles of choice. The people are really friendly a nice Filipino community. Donkie Donkie just opened up there so that's interesting. Enjoy.

Prices are almost the same where I live in, and that scene you posted on don quijote they have the right to check your bag it's their store, here in Oahu Hawaii don quijote stores they make sure that all the security storage your bag in the lockers and give you a number of plats after you return your locker number to the counter service you can claim them once you're done shopping at their store.

I worked in rural Alaska for a summer in 2014 and it was the same way. Unfortunately these places don’t have the economies of scale like the mainland. Everything is flown or barged in making it super expensive. By the way I work in law enforcement and the security officer is correct. Private business don’t need “probable cause” for a search, that only applies to government agents like the police. You already consent to the search when you enter the store, or you can stop shopping there. Many stores where I work have policies where you can’t even bring a bag into the store, or leave it at the front with customer service or checkout.

I worked in loss prevention in the United States for almost a decade. A store employee has no legal authority to detain or search anyone, they can only ask, and if they detain you then that is illegal. The only legal way they can detain you is if they have evidence that you have stolen their merchandise. In loss prevention if you make a bad stop, detain someone and they have not stolen anything, you will be fired. This is because what you did was illegal and you open up the store to a civil lawsuit. You work in law enforcement?
