This has nothing to do with quality. It's about where the store is and the monied folk who can afford to shop there. Ohhh and the rent is too dayummmed high! Ohh and yeah the cherries are expensive if you got them today. They are out of season. That one doesn't surprise me. Otherwise, I appreciate your video!!!!

@@deathb1ossom Honestly the subway was the thing I was scared of most, but actually ended up being a fun part of the trip! It's so easy to use (you just tap your phone/card once to get on) and a couple of people even struck up a conversation with me. Don't be afraid to ask locals/staff for directions "does this train go to x?". The most important thing is whether it's going uptown or downtown, and I was able to get off and hop onto the train going the opposite way if I got the wrong direction (without paying again). Do you know how to get to Manhattan from the airport?
@arfriedman4577
@arfriedman4577 Күн бұрын
The subway lines have colors. Just watch the entrance stairways for direction. The MTA site should have maps of the train stops.its a pretty simple train system. You can ask me other questions. There are busses too. They can be longer time than train.

Former NYer. I usually shopped at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Jacks 99 Cent World (they used to have really good imported pastries and cookies for $1 and Hageen Daaz for $2). But admit to sometimes stopping into Citarella and Dean & Deluca which is now Butterfield Market. Even ran into Paul Orfalea there in Dec 2015 and had a funny interaction with him over the Honey Crisp Apples ($1.99 each). The millionaires on the Upper East Side picking up a few things didn't seem to bat an eye though. The price of that Ham & Cheese at E.A.T cafe is criminal and crazy, even if you're rich.

Meh, own an apartment building in NYC and these prices really mean nothing even at the highest level. I pay $2,000 a month for heating oil and $1500 a month for insurance and lawyers cost $500 an hour, at that point paying $32 for a sandwich is trivial. Now imagine you are someone making millions of dollars a year, then it really is inconsequential. If anything those prices are to keep people away so that the super rich can shop there in relative peace.

I live in the Upper East Side. The really sad thing is that Gristedes, the mediocre local NYC supermarket, is far more expensive than most of these places. Happier Grocery (which is the new "Erewhon" of NYC) has $45/lb tuna salad, $23 mushrooms, and $20 butter! A 12 oz bag of their brand's unsalted cashews is $18.49 (which is far more than a 40 oz bag at Costco). Loved this video! Would love to see more like this :)

Part of the expense of some stores is related to paying union wages and providing union benefits. It is what the market will bear. It is also perceived value. What really gets me is when I hear of people using food stamps at expensive stores. I think most wealthy people do not shop -they hire people to shop for them with a credit account. Thumbs up.

Really good video Jon. A bit different for you but it's not something you have done a lot of and food shopping is something we do on a regular basis and was good to see some of the expensive places in New York. Although we all know New York and food can be so expensive. I found this very interesting. Some of those prices were a joke but the $32 Ham and Cheese Sandwich was a disgrace. Seriously it was thin and not even that big. I don't know how they can justify charging this. Some of the other items were very overpriced to. I don't like how some of these influencers highlight certain food. I live in England and we have some great supermarkets but I always like going around ones in New York and other places but I love Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I think they offer quality produce which although not always cheap are much better value than the ones you showed us. Really good work as usual. Love the variety of videos.

There's another pricey grocery store in Chinatown of all places called Happier Grocery which is probably the closest thing to Erewhon.

Nice tour of UES grocery stores! I do think you need to be strategic though. I have heard the ice cream at Butterfield’s is awesome so you probably nailed that. As for Citerella, it’s all about their seafood counter for me - a bit pricier than other places but not outrageous and great variety and quality. I make a beeline to that and skip most everything else in the store.

Hm, I don't know... how can you compare Trader Joe's to Erewhon or Eli Zabar's, at least as far as prices go? You can get the Spanish potato chips for a fraction of the price at Despana in Noho or the Essex Market on the Lower East Side. Erewhon and Zabar's cater to the type of customer for whom price is not a concern-grocery stores that have branches in places like Cold Spring or Napeague in the Hamptons, where NOTHING has a price. The expensive markets are charging for real estate in affluent neighborhoods and for the presentation, which clearly panders to the social media and perceived luxury crowd. Buyer beware! I've lived in New York for almost 40 years and spend very little on great food.

Struggling to find items to add up to $50 and finding not overly overpriced eggs at Butterfield show that high price reputations can be just that -- overhyped reputations. Also note the high praises for the quality of the ice cream and jam he got from there. You get what you pay for. You can find cheap stuff anywhere if you're willing to sacrifice quality. You don't have to buy the evidently coveted Korean strawberries. High price points that can survive have their market and are usually not that bad. Oftentimes outrage over high prices, especially at certain "luxury" places are based on cherry picked references and unwarranted.

Sometimes you do. However, Aldi has really good 100% fruit preserves for good prices. High quality cheese is just a few dollars there also (sometimes I treated myself to it). The potato chips, orange juice, and ham and cheese sandwich were the silliest items. You get what you pay for to a point and then it gets silly. Breyer ice cream (the 100% natural options) and Cape Cod Potato chips are high quality items for decent prices.

Uhm... who buys bottled water for cooking??? Get a Zero Water or Brita filter. And the difference between the US and the EU - in the EU they sell local farmer produce because it's fresher and cheaper - in the US they sell it because it's more expensive and gets you status/bragging rights.

I have a very sizable disposable income and live near the Trader Joes you featured. I go all the time for basics, not fresh veg or fruit though, plus I patronize a regular supermarket nearby and also the new Wegmans downtown in Astor Place that delivers!. I rarely shop at the Whole Foods which is also a few blocks away. As for Eli's, it is a little north of me, but I have gone a few times. It is insane and unjustifiable in pricing and I don't understand the economics I shop there for a specialty product or two on a very rare occasion, but it's otherwise absurd and beyond the pale even for me who can afford a $32 sandwich. Sure I could pay it, but I'm not a fool.
