ABOUT KENSHO QUEST 🏝
Aloha! We are a worldschooling family with two young kids. Our home base is the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii. We've been living a nomadic lifestyle for the past 12 years. Once we started traveling, we just wanted to keep on exploring!
We like to make new friends, eat local foods, and immerse ourselves in culture. We strive towards a natural, minimalist, zero-waste lifestyle. We're not perfect, but we keep trying!

We rent a 4 bedroom 3 bath(full baths) for Rm1500($370). That includes all utilities. We lived in Johor Bahru for about 5 years. Been Ipoh now for about a year. Love it. If you live like a tourist you will pay tourist prices. Live like a local and they accept you as one. Love it in Ipoh. They call it the "City in the clouds". It's about two hours north of KL.

Very informative video as always. I love the list of free or low cost family fun places in this video and the one with your kids in it. I agree that it's so much cheaper to have regular fun in Asia like movies, bowling, mini golf (if they have that in Malaysia?), Etc. I wonder if they have good bowling alleys in MY like they do in TW that doesn't break the bank? KL looks like an amazing city to explore for families and we can't wait to check everything out. Thanks for all the cost of living info!

Staying in city center anywhere in the world is usually very expensive. If you have family and want to have longer stay than a week, look at places like Mont Kiara, Bukit Jalil, Ampang (lots of malls, eateries, supermarkets). Not too far from city center if you really need to go. Rent will definitely be cheaper than city center. Travelling by Grab is still affordable. If you have time, then take the LRT, MRT. Take a Grab from station to the nearest mall.

@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. What type of information would you like to know about health insurance? For us, since we are expats we use Safety Wing which is available for most nationalities around the world. However, if we eventually get MM2H then there will be other options available to us that may be cheaper and more comprehensive. You also always have the option of just using a private hospital which while costs more, you will get usually faster and better service. Hopefully, some locals can chime in with more information.

Actually ,if you don’t live in the expats area of bangsar .....KL is cheap to live in. I have investments around the world and I think KL is one of the best value for money place to live . Get a condo in PJ , Bandar Utama , Taman Tun and you can save 35% on rent . The food, services etc are cheaper as well as they think you are “ local “ ...... Lots of good and cheap local food in PJ ... In bangsar , there are lots of aircon outlets which the expats frequent. Locals eat simple , eg , chicken rice , wanton noodles etc for like RM7 ....no air con but you eat and run . Imagine , a hearty lunch for like RM7. Wow. A cold baguette sandwich in Paris is EU6. Go to an aircon place in the mall to linger around.....for lunch , shopping, etc.

Looking forward to seeing videos from your return to KL. Any thoughts on putting your kids into international schools? I have 3 kids ranging from 1 to 9 and we have a two year plan to move to Malaysia. It is going to take some time to detach ourselves from our business and other obligations in California. I'm looking forward to having the kids go to schools where they will have deep exposure to multiple languages.
@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest 3 жыл бұрын
We will definitely make more videos once we return :) As for international schools we do plan to do that as well in combination with homeschooling which we are doing now. I don't think there will be any issue with your kids getting immersed in so many different languages. We also, want our kids immersed and to learn multiple languages ( and ours are similar ages! ). Most of the locals we have met can speak multiple languages! The key is to try and get the MM2H once it is reimplemented. KL, Johor and Penang are great choices. But, many locals have consistently told us that Penang has a great assortment of international schools which focus on some form of combination of english/malay/chinese/or other. Good luck and we hope to hear more about your journey!
@nusabudiman
@nusabudiman 3 жыл бұрын
If you wanna learn more languages I think KL is the best place to live. KL arguably is the most cosmopolitan of all countries I've been. Unlike other countries in Southeast Asia (or the world for that matter), Malaysia does not implement assimilationist policy like others particularly in language and school system. So, each ethnic in Malaysia still keep their own mother tongue intact. And not only that, each major ethnic have their own school teaching in their own language for example you have Chinese School and Tamil School which used their own respective language as medium of instruction in Malaysia apart from our National School which teach in our national language i.e standard Malay language. Besides that you also have private schools which used English and also religious Muslim school which used Arabic as medium of instruction. To be honest, with this kind of diverse school system ( which probably the only one in the world where the previously migrant communities were allowed to have their own school system), it has its own advantages and disadvantages, i.e you can have a choice of different school system for your kids, you can also have more opportunity to learn many new languages and with that you generally will have a more receptive attitude towards diversity, but at the same time, it entrenched ethnic consciousness due to having a school which caters to ethnic language communities which in turn resulting into lack of interaction among the various linguistic ethnic communities except for those who choose our National School System. Perhaps if you live in Malaysia longer you can observe the distinctive ethnic features of each communities where they are together as Malaysian in terms of nationality but pretty much separated in terms of ethnicities, building their own set of ethnic enclaves and linguistic circle of friends. That's the boons and banes of having a diverse school system like Malaysia.

There's no such thing as a perfect city in this world. Every city in this world has its own uniqueness. It is just the matter of much we appreciate and comfortable with the uniquness. Plus, how much we can tolerate with the things that we are not comfortable with. If the scores for these two is high enough for us, for sure we can stay in the city for as long as we wanted.

Hello! Thanks for the video! I'm wondering what you guys do for a living to be able to travel around? Do you know if there is a large expat culture in KL? Thanks!! :)
@KenshoQuest

Hi Joyce, we both work online. There is a large expat community but as far as culture, that will depend on what you are interested in. For us, since we are a family we like to meet up with other expat/traveling families and there are plenty of those! Not only in KL but all of Malaysia. Also, since KL is a very central hub it is very easy to get to nearby places like BKK, HCMC and Bali - all of which have large expat cultures. I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask other questions :)

I'm planning to visit (probably live) there, but heard plenty of people saying that crime rate is relatively high and facilities (e.g.streets and toilets) are quite dirty there. Is that true? I would reapply appreciate to hear your opinion on safety and cleanliness in Malaysia (esp. KL) thank you! :)

@KenshoQuest 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the compliment :) While I have heard this from other people we have never encountered anything like this in KL nor anywhere in Malaysia. We have always felt very safe and people very friendly and helpful. I think what is most important is do your research about neighborhoods before visiting them. KL is a big city! And for streets and toilets being dirty?? Maybe near some of the markets and older neighborhoods but in general KL is very clean. As you go out to smaller towns, yes they can be less clean but not necessarily dirty. I hope this helps!

Out of curiosity... Between Bangkok, Saigon and KL? Which is the best to stay with kids? Your preferred place ...reason? Please share as both of had an experience in such places.
@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Johari, those are some great questions which we intend to answer fully in an upcoming episode ;) For now, I can tell you that all three are great safe places but KL is the safest for our kids and us too! A couple of reasons are: 1) The air quality in KL is always better. Most people don't take that into consideration until it's too late! The air quality in Saigon can be so bad for so many days that we don't even go outside. 2) KL has sidewalks or pedestrian walkways almost everywhere. That is almost non-existent in all of Viet Nam and only in the new modern places or main streets you will find them in Bangkok. Let us know if you have other types of questions you want us to answer in future episodes as well. Terima kasih!

May i answer as Malaysian this is what i know Us or canada or australia or local international school can cost RM8000- 15000 +- (sometime more or less) per semester.per year around RM16000-rm 30000 They have many curriculum + swimming class, horse riding, so many more, so it cost more Malaysian school. In the city, some school use fully english but most Malaysia school use national language for their classroom.you need to search for the school n it usually more pack. It more cheaper RM 1500 per year. It free if you spouse is Malaysian.

were you in KL previously with mm2h? Is it possible to stay a few months in KL without mm2h? What about schooling? We have a 12 yr old and would like to put her in a KL school.
@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest 3 жыл бұрын
We have not yet applied for MM2H and it is currently suspended. Regardless, most nations are allowed a 90 day entry into Malaysia without a visa. You can verify your country from your embassy. We would usually stay around 90 days. We currently homeschool our kids but we do sometimes enroll them in private schools while abroad. In Malaysia most schools will require you to have a residence. Therefore, you will most likely need to look at private schools. Both KL and Penang have plenty.

It is quite expensive for us to get healthcare in a private hospital. Government hospitals for locals are cheap. We pay as much as RM1 to get medical attention which inclusive of everything (lab investigations, routine blood tests, etc). However, if you have insurance, it should be affordable. A simple ailment such as viral fever may cost you between USD400 - USD1000 (average), depending on which private hospital you went to. Local insurance has set a certain law to the hospitals and doctors and they must abide.
