7:40 If you have leased it for 1 year, it would have costed half the price on monthly basis. Cost of living in Malaysia is quite low(compared to any other ASEAN countries) due to multiple subsidies,ie. gas, petrol and electricity coupled with no GST.

It looks like you took a great decision to stay in the more local area of Georgetown. The apartment look pretty cool, very modern and spacious. I love the bedroom with those lovely floor to ceiling windows. I can't believe how cheap it was for all that luxury!

I really loved Penang, I stayed in the same building for a week. Penang being an Island is quite expensive what I came to know from one of the Grab Driver when I was there, and when I told him the apartment which I booked how much it cost me he said you really got a good deal :)... I find certain things definitely is cheaper in Malaysia if I compare with Thailand or even Vietnam where I have stayed for like 3 months.

Theres a common misunderstanding of the use of the word colonial architecture, because the a more accurate term is Straits Eclectic Architecture, which refers to the shop houses or mansions lived and built by the local Straits Chinese/BabaNyonya, the architecture layout and function is heavily dictated by Straits Chinese Culture but at the same time carreis heavy styling influence from the British, whereas true and proper Colonial buildings may refer to Government buildings or British Resident Bungalows or Churches as they are used and commisioned by the then British administrators

Still can't believe how beautiful Penang Island was - I only stayed there for five days, and still can't get enough of it. Really miss the food and the cost! Love all of those amazing murals. And you stayed in a much, much better place that I did, LOL. The infinity pool looks amazing, and not bad Nasi Kandar place nearby! A bit pricier accommodation than I expected, but still a good bargain, I suppose, if you are comparing it with London! Thanks for sharing!

With denghi fever rampant, a high floor (20th) is a good precaution. I scored a three-bed, two-bathroom apartment for RM1,400 a month (say Stg.265) in Eden Seaview in Batu Ferringhi.

Ya bonks bruv, there's tons of coworking spaces. :) I tried them all out when I was there last year but the one I settled on was MSOGO Coworking Space, in Prangin Mall. In my opinion it is the best one because its right in the middle of George Town. I spent almost 3 months there and stayed in all of the different parts of the city but the office was always a short walk into this central point. Plus it had an amazing sushi place downstairs and a subway which supplied me with healthy salads at lunch.

They close the pool for cleaning at certain times of day ;) English is spoken quite widely around Malaysia, so we got by quite easily! Overall, I think your money goes further in Thailand (especially with accommodation), but daily costs are pretty similar if you stick to local vendors

Just a question though..Is it really true that you can't get in the water at Batu Ferringhi because of the jellyfish?? We are trying to decide if we should skip the beach there as we only have 3 days to explore... Anyway, awesome video as always! 😄

Yes it is true, I think it's seasonal but I'm not sure on the details. I would head to Penang National park instead, go to Turtle Beach and Monkey beach :)

Malaysia is just as secure as Thailand, maybe even more so in some regards. It's very safe. I've been lucky enough to not need any healthcare in either country, so I can't give you a good answer on that.

Healthcare is excellent and reasonable. I tend to make trips out for investigations egMRI & medical treatments. In Penang you have quite a choice. Prices are not expensive. However dental & opticians used to be cheap but on this trip in 2022 the prices have crept up quite a bit and not great savings compared to UK (crown £500 compared to £750 in UK, Variluz Essillon lens - not much difference). Hope this helps.

There are plenty of vegan spots in both Penang and KL. Malaysian food has lots of crossover with Indian cuisine, so there are tonnes of veggie dishes. Chiang Mai and Bangkok are cheaper yes, but food is subjective. Both Malaysian and Thai food are some of the best in the world.

@@OneShotAdventures I have not spent a night in Chiang Mai City since 2004. When i am traveling in northern Thailand i make a huge loop around Chiang Mai just to avoid it. It really lost its charm for me. There are times i feel as if i am somewhere in Europe because of the foreigners. But true there are areas on the outskirts of the city not so bad. I just did not travel half way around the planet to be surrounded by the very people i was trying to get away from.

I lived on Penang island when on duty serving with the RAAF 1974-1980 in two tours. Now this was sometime ago and quite obviously some things have changed. Then food poisoning was a constant problem if you ate from the roadside food providers, I daresay in some cases it could still be a problem as I don't believe there is government inspections of food vender preparation cleanliness. This would apply to most of south east asia as food goes off so quickly in the tropics. Any slight wound sustained can become infected quite quickly due to the constant heat and humidity. Things to consider are the availability and quality of medical treatment and what type of insurance you have to cover these costs. The heat and humidity can become quite intolerable as it is with you 24/7 unless you have access to air conditioning. Last but certainly not least is the type of government Malaysia has. It was styled after the British Westminster system but as it is a Muslim country there are laws there that do not sit well with a westerner used to UK, Australian, US and other more enlightened country's type of government. It's basically before you chose to live in a country there is much more to consider then just the cost of living there.

You seem to have a rather outdated view of modern Malaysia. Things have changed a lot since the 1980s! I was in Malaysia for several months and never once got food poisoning from any vendor (often eating from Nasi Kandars daily). If you are a fussy or nervous eater, I would recommend sticking to restaurants and cafes. Most have pretty strict food regulations in place, not to mention you have western supermarkets like Tesco to shop at. I also received some minor medical attention in Penang and was very impressed by the quality of care. Moreover, the people of Penang are very friendly and welcoming. As a westerner used to the UK, I had a wonderful time there. There are laws in the UK that do not sit well with me either. No country is perfect. If you are making your decision to move there based on one basic cost of living video, that’s a problem. I’d always recommend visiting first to see if you like it.

The tropics and I are not friends that's true but even recently the availability of medical care especially care for serious life threatening situations in most of south east asia including Penang is not what you would call first class. After all Malaysia is still considered a third class developing country. I was basically looking at their their adherence to Muslim Sharia law which is archaic in the extreme, especially to Muslim women. I would not ever consider living in Malaysia myself apart from any thing else you need to have faith in the government of a country you live in otherwise you could not ever feel safe in my opinion. I was bought up in a democratic and guaranteed freedom of speech country, Australia. You can't voice any views against the Malaysian government in public without being arrested, do your homework. This was true 40 years ago and is probably more true now.

Sharia/Islamic Law plays a very small role in the whole Malaysian legal system and is a state law matter. It also ONLY applies to Muslims. In fact, Malaysia often uses English common law, equity law and statues. The constitution of Malaysia also guarantees freedom of speech, although I do concede that this has been abused in recent years by the right wing government. No foreigners have been arrested for voicing their views. Malaysia is still a developing country, however they are on the edge of changing that. In many ways they are ahead of "developed" countries like Australia. For example, Penang (and most of Malaysia) has faster overall internet speeds than Australia, Canada and the US. In fact, the Penang government have now made fibre optic internet a utility in all new apartment buildings, while Australia ranks 50th in the world for internet speeds. You are obviously not a fan of Malaysia and that's fair enough. This is just a basic video, covering the baseline costs of living there. Luckily for you, nobody is forcing you to go back 😊
