I believe it! I remember for us, we used to pay around that just to eat at a mediocre restaurant. Don’t miss it at all! Now we average around 30 euros, but we definitely splurge at times to dine in fancier restaurants which (I believe) at most was 80 euros. Those are rare occasion ones. Overall, eating out is definitely more affordable than the states ❤️

No tips in Portugal. You can give if you had a good service, but the employee are paid by the restaurant owner, not on tips. A top restaurant in Caldas average on 100€/2 persons. Normal places about 20€/person. If you eat what we call "prato do dia" (every restaurant have it, its the prepared dish of the day) its around 10€/person

I live in the US and I tip because it's part of the culture but to all Americans moving to Portugal, stop tipping. Really, I mean it, you're ruining a good thing. Portugal doesn't have a tipping culture and you're already changing that in some areas of the country, leave that custom back in the US. I know you think you're being nice but you're really not at all, you're distorting the market and changing the expectations of the restaurant workers.

When you say you use the fireplace. Is it wood burning or fuel. If wood. Where did u get wood and how much? Does it warm the place? Thank you!

Hi Josie. Super helpful video! Caldas is in the top 5 places we want to visit on our pre-expatriation scouting trip. Ultimately though, the #1 factor in choosing where we will move is the availability of ultra-fast fiber internet (at least 500Mbs, preferably 1Gbs) which is critical for my partner's job. If you don't have fiber, do you know if it's available in Caldas? Thanks in advance.

Hi! Fiber is available all over Caldas. The main internet providers is MEO and Vodafone. We have fiber and it’s 500mbs. Never had any issues.

I was just in that area looking at properties a few weeks ago. Caldas isn't walking distance to the coast/beach. Did I misunderstand what you meant by walking distance to the beach?

I do apologize for the confusion. Caldas da Rainha is a large municipality that includes 12 freguesias which include some of the beach towns like Foz do Arehlo and Salir do Porto. The city center of Caldas isn't walkable to the beach, but it's an easy bike ride :)

@@josieinportugal6454 Thanks Josie. Your videos was one of the main reasons why I spent time around that area looking at properties when I was in Portugal in November. So your videos are greatly appreciated.

Hello, thanks for another great video. I wonder if you can talk about if you have had problems with insulation and mold problems in Caldas? Also, do you think Caldas is too small a town and can grow old fast?

Insulation is wide issue in Portugal in general on any home that's more them 15 years old unless it as been updated recently. The building codes back them did not required it. We sold an 27 year old family home, and purchase a new home with much greater comfort for that reason. Humidity is another issue on older homes as well, mostly because foundations on the walls water will travel up the walls. Just some tips that have recognize in the building process. From Portuguese/Canadian snowbird arriving next Monday in the Aveiro region for the winter months.

Thank you for this video! Just curious to know if your kids go to a private Portuguese school or an international school? The tuition you mentioned seems very reasonable, and from what I can tell the international schools are quite expensive.

Please don't judge. When I was a boy growing up in Venice, California, Mexican food and pizza were way too spicy for me, not even spicy hot, just too spicy. As a result, my parents would stop at McDonalds on the way to the Mexican restaurant and get me a plain hamburger, fries and a chocolate shake. Wasn't a picky eater at all, by the way. Our usual, favorite Mexican waitress always got a chuckle. Now I'm 66 yo and have been eating spicy foods almost all my life, with my favorite, by far, being Indian food.
