Күн бұрын

Boa Tarde! Hope you're having a great week! Did you know that this past Monday (November 1st) was a National holiday? In the states we call it All Saints Day. In Portugal, children will go door to door asking for "Pao por Deus" and in return, they will receive sweet breads or now a days, candy.
Anyway, I wanted to share with you all our school experience thus far. I know choosing the right school is very subjective to parents and one of the toughest decisions to make (especially in a new country).
In Portugal, you have three options- international, private Portuguese or public. International schools follow their own curriculum and is usually taught in a foreign language such as English, German, French etc. Most international that is taught in English follows the British curriculum. You then have the option to enroll your child(ren) in the Portuguese system. There are two options- public or private. Both follow the Portuguese ministry of education. The public is free whereas the private does have a tuition and extra fees.
So grab a comfy blanket and a snack because this is a long video. Hope you guys enjoy it and if you do, please hit the like and subscribe for more family friendly content :)

International schools are the best. I was born and raised in Lisbon and I feel like going to international schools really enriched my education and I made many friends from Lisbon and from all around the world.

As a portuguese i must say we have biases related to all things that are foreign or international, we always think is better than national. But like you listened from Josie's experience, portuguese schools public or private are at the same level than international schools.

Your kids will always learn english since you are their parents and they will speak it frequently at home. Learning a second language is the way to go in my opinion, they will get to grasp the culture a lot better and even transition better to other languages like Italian, Spanish, etc... I'd just advice not to transition them frequently between schools since it's a time in their lives where making friends is an important growth factor. Cheers!

Thank you for sharing your journey! Do you now of any resources to find a list of Portuguese (public and private) elementary schools in a certain area? I've seen a list of ranked high schools, but not for primeiro ciclo (grades 1-4) or segundo ciclo (grades 5-6).

My wife and I are planning to move to "somewhere" within the "Silver Coast" region. The "somewhere" will be determined by schools. I'm a high school science teacher and have decided to retire early so we can move while our young boys have their flexible young brains that can acquire languages quickly. My list must have the same boxes as yours! what you are describing about your children's school matches our desires exactly. Do you think making friends with Portuguese classmates has been as important as instructional support? I'm curious about how much "language acquisition" through making friends accelerates the learning. So glad I clicked on this video. Subscribed. BTW, my wife is originally from Philippines. Do you feel like the only Asian in town? 🙂

I believe making Portuguese friends is invaluable. Not only does it help to accelerate the language learning, but also gives your children a quicker introduction to the Portuguese culture. As for the Asian culture. Honestly, in the area where I live, there aren’t many Asians other than the employees who work at the Chinese stores. However, I have always felt accepted and welcomed.

Hello, thank you so much for putting in the time and energy in such an educating video. Question: my family of four and I are thinking of moving to Portugal from the US. My daughter is on the Autism spectrum and currently attends a public school that offers a really good ESE (Exceptional Student Education for children w/ disabilities). Are you aware of any similar programs within any of the Portuguese Private Schools? She’s currently in 6th grade.

Hello Josie, Once again great topic and great intel!! One question we have is do they mandate full vaccination of kids to be accepted?pertussis,measles,hep-etc? And another is do they mandate /require , the covid vaccination? Kind of important in this climate…. Just curious…. Thanks once again for all the information….. We’re planning on being there March 1st ,in the Alcobaca area….So many unknowns running through are minds…We have a house in Cela and our visa appointment in San Francisco 11/24…Fingers crossed and hope this is the right move-yikes Chad and Alice

Hi Chad and Alice. Great questions! When I enrolled my children, they did require a medical record with their up to date vaccinations. I am unsure what kind of vaccinations Portugal recommend/require versus the states, but the school didn’t comment if we needed anything more than what the kids already received. Regarding Covid, kids here have not been vaccinated yet as I see it’s still rather new even in the states. The general population of Portugal have been vaccinated and I have a feeling that Portugal will open vaccinations for children 5+ soon. Regarding mandating it in schools, I can’t say for sure if they will require it or not, but I can say that most parents here are very concerned about Covid. They are very proactive on testing their children so I will assume that most will get their children vaccinated even if it is not mandatory, but that is just my guess. I love Alcobaça and I’m sure you will too! If you love a good burger- check out Meat in the town center. Best of luck with your move ❤️
