In this video I cover the basic costs to live in Toronto for a family of 4. From rent to internet, Netflix and the cost of auto insurance and much more. I talk about average costs for vet visits, eye tests, dental and even the cost to change from summer to winter tyres! I will give you an idea of what groceries cost. I mention the cost of internet for a family of four and how much it will cost to have a phone plan in Toronto.
Don’t forget to consider these items in your budget: the cost of summer camps in Toronto for your kids, the expense of daycare and aftercare and how to apply for a subsidy for daycare and aftercare. I decided to add the average cost of private schooling in Toronto to compare costs if your children are currently in a private schooling system.
Exciting news! I will be hosting a series of videos on the Howzit Canada KZbin channel called “CANADIAN LIVING” which will cover these costs but on a much more detailed level and with experts who can give information and advice on topics such as:
Financial planning in Canada, Retirement Annuities & Pensions (monies still tied up in your country), Financial Immigration and Tax in Canada: how it works and much more.
You can follow these videos on the Howzit Canada KZbin channel by subscribing. You will be notified as soon as they upload: / howzitcanada
Follow me on my blog www.justmyscen... for more articles on immigration to Canada, Schooling in Canada, What to Pack What to Leave Behind and a few of my favourite things, tips and advice.
Enjoy! Please give me a “thumbs up” and “subscribe” to get notified of my latest videos when they upload.
Let me know what kind of content YOU would like to see in the comments!

Hi Andrea, I recently found your KZbin channel and blog. I have watched every single video, some more than once and devoured every piece of information you have shared. While our plans to emigrate to Canada start to materialize, we thought my husband would be transferred to Toronto, but now it looks like he will be transferring to Vancouver. I have two main concerns about Vancouver, the cost of living and connecting with people and making friends. I know you are based in Oakville Toronto but hoping you might have some insight into this. Also do you know what the equivalent of Oakville is in Vancouver. I hope you are able to answer these questions. Thank you for your incredible videos. They have helped me so much over the passed few weeks.

This is such a informative video. It's helpful when you make comparisons to South Africa especially when it comes to where to choose to leave. Do people have Helpers/Maid in Canada to look after kids and clean the house? How much does that cost if you know?
@AndreavanNiekerk
@AndreavanNiekerk 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Khutso - thanks! People sometimes do have cleaners - most often they use cleaning companies who come in at a time that works for you - say weekly or bi-weekly. They do not usually do laundry. Some people also source private individuals to come in too.

Hi Andrea, I'm loving your videos; super informative. Your videos have helped shift my mindset about moving; we are super excited to start the immigration process now. Thank you! Quick question regarding healthcare, as we're used to paying our medical aid here. What does Canada cover? Do they have a national health service and do permanent residents qualify for this? Or must we look into private health care? You've mentioned "OHIP" - can you explain this further? Thanks so much!
@AndreavanNiekerk
@AndreavanNiekerk 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Natalie! Thanks so much !!!!! OHIP is only for the province of Ontario - this does not cover eye exams for people between the ages of 20 and 64. It does not cover dental (filings, check ups, cleaning etc. They will cover if in hospital). You can Google this info if you search up what OHIP does and does not cover. OHIP is guaranteed for any person that has been in Ontario for over 3 months. Private medical insurance would be a benefit through the company you work for, if they offer it.

Good video, one comment I have is that hydro is not electricity and water combined, at least not for me. Hydro is just electricity and I get a water bill separate. Also perhaps it's worth mentioning that you can survive for much less etc especially when starting out i.e. you can rent a basement as a starting point. I don't think everyone is lucky enough to come in and go straight into renting a $2800 house:)

I agree completely, that’s why I am so specific about it being an average cost for a family of 4 in a 4 bedroom home! You are spot on and you can definitely do it for much cheaper! Thanks for your comments ⭐️

Yes. A house in Peterborough rents for $1500 same size as 4 bedroom here. I do think the 1500 - 2000 for groceries is very high and if you shop wisely, you can get away well with $1000 a month for 4 (shopping at No Frills, Food Basics, etc). I had to do it for the longest time while hubby was full time student and we lived on only one salary. Just for those people that start out and might have less and just try get by... Love these videos and cannot wait for the ones on house buy and investments. Have lots to learn myself still.

Hello. For some reason today i thought about canada and your video is the first one i found. In your opinion would a family of 3. (Me. My fiance and our 2 years old) be able to live on one salary (primary school teacher). Im self employed in SA and would not have a job lined up on arrival which means we would be coming over on a job offer for her

Hello Marli- thanks for your support!!! This is not an easy question to answer...! I would be able to help you with a video on “How To” but the process varies depending on which route you take and most people either do it themselves or use an immigration agency. I can recommend Canada Abroad - check out their website for their information and fees.

If you're making $10 000 a month then you'll be fine here in Toronto. Anything under that you'll be eating canned food and wearing hand me down clothes.
