Can honestly say I replaced many of these the hard way. Some didn’t have attic access and others I cut thru floor boards to fit 2x6 joist spacers for new metal boxes. This new style is perfect example of pay a premium price to save loads of time.

@John Lawson I happened upon this because wifey wanted a huge light over our table. Prefab modular house with crawl space for attic. Replaced most light boxes when we moved in years ago. First I had to wire outlets and lights in attic to even see and work in there. Cut through r30 insulation to get to those boxes and custom cut 2x6 boards for new metal boxes. I put this type in ,in less then 1/2 hour, with out crawling thru attic and almost no mess. Almost everything in life is subjective. Unbelievable time saver in my opinion.

I used to get mad when people would say, “ that much ?! But you were only here for 30 minutes?!” I learned early on to help educate my clients that they are not just paying me for my time while at their property. They are paying me for the entire time it takes to get the job done, and that includes time to go pick up materials, even if they are on in the trailer before they ever thought of the project, that time gets added into having the exact part they need me to have to get the job done. They are also paying for me to have my trailer/truck to be able to go get and bring materials to the property. When I have to get this detailed with some clients, I remind them that the reason they called me is because either they didn’t have the knowledge or the time or both to do the project (maybe not in those exact words) and so there is a cost to using someone else’s time and knowledge to get the project done. Another great video, thank you for helping to educate the people who call on us to help them get their projects done.

Turning the switch off may save you a trip to the basement but you MUST still check for power at the fixture. Would be plain silly to assume that the person who wired that room brought power through the switch and not the fixture especially in an older home. I’ve even seen newer homes with power at the fixture. NEVER TRUST ANYONE ELSES WORK.

@@Justanotherwhiteguyyabish sometimes, especially older houses, power doesn’t always go to the switch, it’s goes to the fan first, and gets reversed, so the switch can be off, but power will still be in the fan. Best bet for homeowners is to switch the breaker off to be safest

Great vid! One thing I like to do when working on an angled or vault, is attach a string to the brace and let a bunch hang down out of the hole while getting it up through the hole.. That way, if it tips and slides down the vault, I have that line to retrieve that bracket. Yes, I did learn that trick the hard way...

I've stopped messing with running 14/3 and doing double switches for retrofit fans. Many of the nicer fans come with a wireless remote or you can buy one separate on Amazon for less than $15. Then, you can control light/fan and adjust fan speed (L/M/H), which you can't do from a double switch. The remotes have a holster that mounts on the wall, or you can put it on the nightstand or whatever. Easier install (costs customer way less than pulling wire) and gives them the same/better benefits.

I despise remotes. Home depot has a unit(Hunter) that fits in the wall outlet and gives you complete control of the fan. They come with dip switches in case you install more than one unit in your house so you're not turning one off and turning another one on else where in the house from the same controller.

Love videos like this. I do a significant amount of this type of work for family-owned rental property, so I have a skewed notion of what things actually cost in the real world when outsourcing stuff. Pop replacement garbage disposals off and on like candy because they go bad so often, block out for fan installs for the future etc. It just helps to know going rates to back myself up when the head boss thinks he isn't getting his money's worth on top of all the other random stuff I do for the business.

I like like the hammer handle for pushing up the insulation tip though it might still poke through the vapour barrier. One problem I ran into in a house with a 3rd floor loft was that the centre light in a second floor was in a 11" joist space, too narrow for those remodel supports. One joist was, I think, a builtup beam to support a loft wall.

? Can you hook up a ceiling fan on a string of pod lights with one switch.. or do you need to have it wired separately

Do you have any videos of replacing a recessed light fixture with a ceiling fan?

That's interesting. I guess if hole for recessed light is bigger than old construction fan bracket, you will have to patch hole with sheetrock first and then drill a smaller hole for ceiling fan box. If hole is the same size as ceiling fan box, then it would be same/similar work as shown on video.

Speaking of insulation in ceilings, does anyone have any good advice as to the hazards of vermiculite? I have been told it is not hazardous, but then in my personal reading I discovered around 75% of it contains asbestos. I don't get anywhere near it without my respirator now

My 60 y/o house has 4 ceiling fans. All 4 have the lights run off the switch with the fan always hot. I've seen so many in other houses that the switch runs the fan too. Is there some point in time that home builders stopped running 3 conductor up to the ceiling fixtures?

1:58 Dude! you're supposed to do BOTH the breaker and the light switch during your project, not just the light switch!🤣🤣🤣🤣 Those wires can still be live even with the switch off. So, therefore, you have to shut down the electricity from BOTH of the following I just mentioned.
