A couple of good things that may come out of this is: 1) Review and amend maritime emergency procedures. 2) Review Legal procedures, penalties and responsibilities of those involved. 3) Acknowledge and accept environmentally responsible recycling (not to just award contract to asia due to low cost).

They should scrap the ship, melt down the steal then create a memorial for the lives lost and finally place it right in the harbor where the ship sunk. Have a service where a family member lights an eternal flame in remembrance of the lives lost.

Abyss Walker I agree or maybe a replica of the ship (like the Titanic Museums in the US) can be built into a museum

Why scrape if the other half is in it's shape what a total waste of time for Italians especially the shipyard

+jordan almengor You have to understand that the entire upper decks have to be torn off. They are damaged and/or compromised. Everything from the 5th upper deck on one side to the lower 3rd deck on the other side was under water. The rest of the ship was subjected to mold, mildew, humidity and rot. That all has to be reduced to bare metal and sterilized. Every inch of piping, wiring, and mechanics will have to be removed and replaced.

While the Concordia rested on its side for 2 years, the structure began compressing it was crushing in on it self. Even though one side looked in good condition, there was no saving it for future use as a sea-worthy vessel. Ship architects design ships to handle their weight vertically... not horizontally.

She said " the Italian scrap yard is gonna show the technical abilities it has to break down a ship " . What kind of special abilities do you need to break down a ship in a junk yard ?? Other then a bulldozer .

Separation of materials that can be recycled or are hazardous. This isn't being cut up on a beach in India, so it has to meet Eurozone safety, recycling and hazardous materials requirements.

Giovani22 There is also an economic incentive. When most older ships are scrapped in places like India they are basically being dumped for the scrap value of the ships iron. The Costa was brand new, the owners are going to want as much of the ships value back as they can get. Scrapping her in the Eurozone should get a much better price for the material than in India. By no means will they get anything close to recouping the salvage costs, which was over a BILLION Euros, but it will shave a little more off the losses.

KlunkerRider I understand the boat was fairly new , but the hull underneath it was destroyed by a reef , and also it's been laying on it's side partially submerged under water for two and half years . A lot of rot happened inside and out . I think if India wasn't so far away they would have given the boat to them . I think Genoa was much closer and they couldn't take chances of navigating all the way to India

Giovani22 Indeed the distance was also a major factor, the Costa probably wouldn't have made it to Turkey (another major shipbreaking zone) let alone India ;-)

+Ruari Winter Repairing a ship in such shape would require a complete dismantling of the superstructure, gut the interior, tear out the engine room and all mechanical spaces. Then they would have to chip the walls clean and repaint. The only thing they would have, from the main deck down, would be bare metal walls. Then all the insulation would have to be replaced and they would have to replace all of the wiring, piping and utilities. While doing that they would have to put in new boilers, engines, turbines and refit all the fuel, oil, water and sewage tanks. Then, and only then, can they make it something you can live in. What would be cheaper, since they have to clean it out anyway, would be to tow it out and sink it as an artificial reef.
