Rather than trying to tame wild stallions, fearless Costa Rican fisherman Chito prefers a playful wrestle in the water with his best pal Pocho - a deadly 17ft crocodile. The 52-year-old daredevil draws gasps of amazement from onlookers by wading chest-deep into the water, then whistling for his 980lb buddy - and giving him an affectionate hug. Crazy Chito says: "Poncho is my best friend. This is a very dangerous routine but we have a good relationship. He will look me in the eye and not attack me. It is too dangerous for anyone else to come in the water. It is only ever the two of us."
Chito made friends with the croc after finding him with a gunshot wound on the banks of the Central American state's Parismina river 20 years ago. He had been shot in the left eye by a cattle farmer and was close to death. But Chito enlisted the help of several pals to load the massive reptile into his boat. He says: "When I found Poncho in the river he was dying, so I brought him into my house. He was very skinny, weighing only around 150lb I gave him chicken and fish and medicine for six months to help him recover. I stayed by Poncho's side while he was ill, sleeping next to him at night. I just wanted him to feel that somebody loved him, that not all humans are bad. It meant a lot of sacrifice. I had to be there every day. I love all animals - especially ones that have suffered."
It took years before Chito felt that Poncho had bonded with him enough to get closer to the animal. He says: "After a decade I started to work with him. At first it was slow, slow. I played with him a bit, slowly doing more. Then I found out that when I called his name he would come over to me."
At one point during his recovery, Chito left the croc in a lake near his house. But as he turned to walk away, to his amazement Poncho got out of the water and began to follow him home. Chito recalls: "That convinced me the crocodile could be tame." But when he first fearlessly waded into the water with the giant reptile his family was so horrified they couldn't bear to watch. So instead, he took to splashing around with Poncho when they were asleep. Four years ago Chito showed some of his tricks to friends, including getting the animal to close his eyes on command, and they convinced him to go public with a show. Now he swims and plays with Poncho as well as feeding him at the lake near his home in the lowland tropical town of Sarapiqui. The odd couple have now become a major tourist attraction, with several tour operators, including Crocodile Adventures, taking visitors on touring cruises to see the pair.
On the Crocodile Adventures website it describes the spectacle as: "One of the most amazing things that no cruise ship passenger will want to miss, the adventure show between the man and the crocodile."
American crocodiles, which inhabit North, Central and South America, can live to around 70 years old. It is estimated that Poncho is around 50 - almost the same age as his owner. They are also said to be less aggressive than their Nile or Australian counterparts. Chito, whose real name is Gilberto Shedden, was given his nickname by friends, who also call him "Tarzan Tico" - Tico being a familiar word for a Costa Rican.
And he certainly plays up to the name, wearing a tattered pair of leopard-print shorts for his half-hour performances with Poncho.
A keen conservationist, he also offers boat tours, where he eagerly points out a variety of wildlife. But he only charges a few dollars to watch the breathtaking crocodile show, claiming he does not want to cash in on Poncho. He says: "He's my friend, I don't want to treat him like a slave or exploit him. I am happy because I rescued him and he is happy with me because he has everything he needs."

Chito accomplished the impossible. With exotic mammals in captivity, handlers often use a case of "repetition and reinforcement". Positive insight (The same procedure over and over) so the animal comes to expect a positive outcome. They often will use barrier and use the tool of food. Chito took a massive risk as he used himself as the positive tool. Pocho was truly exceptional as he slowly learned to trust him. He did not feel threatened nor view Chito as a food source. It's arguable that Pocho liked the attention Chito offered him. Like a dog or cat enjoys a belly rub. Chito would shower him with cuddles. Pocho seemed to embrace it. Pocho discovered over the years that "together time" was fun. If Pocho had felt threatened or uncomfortable in any way. He would have defended himself and attacked. Many keepers of reptiles only interact if they must be moved or are in need of a vet. The animal does not gain a sense of familiarity with the handlers to realize their presence is a positive stage in the day. As such they react aggressively when someone does enter their enclosure as their instincts kick in and they believe they are in danger. Chito made it known to Pocho he never meant any harm. Only for him to relax when he was around. The evidence speaks for itself. Animals don't allow anyone into their personal space (no matter what the species) if they feel a twinge of doubt by those around them. Pocho was clearly confident that having Chito is such close proximity would be a good thing.
@Silver54ful
@Silver54ful 9 жыл бұрын
***** Animals who suffer damage to the brain are often more likely to be aggressive and impulsive then normal. The are clear indications in many of his videos Poncho was still capable of his own decision making. He chose to trust this man Chito and bond with him. If it was only instinct this man would not have lived past the first day he got in the water.
@Silver54ful
@Silver54ful 9 жыл бұрын
***** I know that Poncho was aggressive to any other person who entered his domain besides Chito's family. Chito said so himself. And there have been cases in Africa and in Central America that crocs have allowed a certain proximity between themselves and humans.And they did not have any wounds to their brains. That was a choice. Excessive damage to the brain would not allow him to make such a decision. If anything Pocho would have been far more violent and raged at anyone or anything that came near him. Incapable of distinguishing who is trustworthy and who is a threat. He was able to do so. Crocs are more resilient and intelligent then people realize. Pocho also had mood swings. He was not docile all the time. The gun shot did not impact his ability to think on his own. I have and continue top support this as a matter of repetition and reinforcement. Along with a special sensitive man and a croc who was using his full ability in awarness to make his own decisions about his environment and the all within it.

@Baldhina Asnake Hello there. No problem. Happy to answer what I can. But which part are you referring to?
@Silver54ful
@Silver54ful 4 жыл бұрын
@Baldhina Asnake I see. Thank you for your question. I think often detractors towards animals (especially the ones that are not considered mainstream cute and cuddly such as crocs) like to assign a single label on them. And to put it bluntly. They call them bad. Therefore they don't believe they can ever be anything more then just that. They believe they can't learn or evolve. As in all they are capable of is causing havoc to people. I argue that animals are greatly under-estimated in their abilities to absorb the world and who they encounter with individual views. Pocho was an animal who did learn to trust and respond to his human companion's affection. Granted he did not offer this to just anyone. He was wary of strangers. The fact that he took to his human handler so willingly says a great deal. But there's still so many people who will never believe animals possess intelligence and emotional capability. So any time a video like this is shown. They respond with "This is all a lie!!!" No matter the evidence presented.

Poncho had a brain injury and was conditioned to expect food. Reptiles don't have the cognitive intelligence or the emotional capability to bond people need to understand that because a lot more people have been killed by crocodiles and alligators than have ever befriended them they're magnificent animals who deserve respect and space they also deserve a healthy amount of caution snd fear and for people to stop humanising them and to see what they are large opportunist predators who will kill you with no remorse people seeing this kind of thing and trying to copy and go out and befriend a crocodile or alligator or keep one as a pet are going to get themself killed and also condemn the animal to death because if they harm a person they'll be haunted down and killed.

Pocho, the “domesticated” Costa Rican crocodile that gained international attention for a weekly show he performed with owner Gilberto Sheeden, died Tuesday at Finca Las Tilapias in the Caribbean-slope town of Siquirres. Olga Valle, Sheeden’s wife, said the nearly 1,000-pound croc died a natural death at age 50. A funeral will be held for Pocho on Sunday at 1 p.m.
