Gary is such a great bloke and has gave me so much good advice and has a wealth of knowledge hes taken time out from no doubt his busy schedule and always answered every question, text and even called me.. ive got a cotucule on order from gary himself. honestly this day and age you wouldn't find a nicer guy and a real gentleman. and he's well respected in the shaving community and his honing is top notch. I'm so thankful i found a true friend just by doing my homework and finding him on the Internet thanks gary for everything mate your 1 in a million and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend him his honing is flawless if you have any doubts don't 👍👍

Bump this! What a great technique, and what a gorgeous Les Latneuse hybrid coticule. What I noticed is that he raise the slurry on the hybrid side...NOT the coticule side. The coticule side is facing down! I just purchased an old preu mine hybrid and am getting used to it. So far, it is lightning fast for setting bevels on the coticule side, and blazing fast for finishing on the hybrid side.

It seems a little bit uncommon to find a coticule that will create results like this (with an easy HHT pass) without linen and stropping. There are probably other guys other than me who have bought half a dozen select coticules or vintage coticules and never found one that will finish a razor as well. At this point in time, though, coticules are very expensive compared to their actual potential - especially as inconsistent and variable as they are.

David W you gotta get one for razors which would have a higher garnet content and a finer garnet content. the best places is the howards company : perfect edge or Ardennes. they will pick one that is for razors. any other place is a crap shoot because a lot of shops think they're all for razors and they're not. all the ones I have gotten from the perfect edge after emailing Howard on what I needed was a great one.

I probably misspoke there a little bit. I did have one really good that was probably close to this, and Gary may be able to make it go better than me (that's just about certain). But the other three I had were not close to it. I sold it only because, like an escher, it was a lot of money for what it was. Mastering a linen and leather, and like the old timers used to do, avoiding honing off the linen prepared edge completely has kind of lessened my wants for stones, too. Any stone that works to the edge always degrades the edge the linen had made, so I try not to remove it completely, but rather use the stone to make sure the bevel all the way up to the edge doesn't get out of line and fat. If that makes sense.

I still do think that coticules are extremely pretty and good ones are really nice feeling. I'd like to have 100 good natural combos just because they look so nice, but that would nearly make me broke.

im a stickler, the blade leaves the stone half of the time on half of the blade, i know this is how its done from old times but there is still something that anoyes me with it/this old way/right way. but i cant see that the lover part of the blade is as sharp as the tip, and thats just a fact since it lack 50% of the process

I am new to straight razors, haven't bought one yet even, but I am looking at what is needed to keep them maintained. Another honing video I saw using norton stones, the person there never moved the blade back and forth, only ever forward, lifting it up and moving it back, then moving it forward again. I thought from that video that moving the blade like that was incorrect then, or is this simply because he used other types of stones?

Yes, that's the general idea using this method. I can't speak for Gary as I'm the camera man, but that's what I do on tough spots. You get all sorts of feed back when honing indicating where additional work is needed. In my case the pressure can be quite considerable, especially on stiffer grinds.

It looks like you were having an issue with the toe of the blade on the side of the blade when the edge is facing you. I looks like you were concentrating on that part, even using more pressure. Is that accurate or is it just the camera angle?
