Nice comparison! In my experience, WN has good colors but they have really bad quality control. Probably nearly half the tubes I’ve bought had problems with under filling or separation. Many tubes I’ve emptied nearly entirely into a single half pan (a 5ml tube should fill well over 2 half pans). And many others separate and don’t mix well back together like this raw sienna which I can barely pick up into a brush. Originally it was completely separated and I spent a long time going through the back of the tube to remix it and it still feels off. I thought it might be related to the shop I got them from (Michael’s). Then I bought their professional field set from Jerry’s. Colors are okay but the pans don’t sit in the box properly and wiggle everywhere. I had to melt a groove in each pan so the friction fit worked correctly. I saw some wiggling in your video too. The sable brush it came with was also complete garbage, it’s like they sent me a used brush. Hairs are completely worn out and splaying everywhere. Winsor Newton could be much better if they just controlled the quality better but everything I buy from them has had crappy elements. Contrast to Daniel smith paints and I have had every little issue with them, only certain paints with heavy granulation I’ve experienced separation with. Frankly it’s worth the extra few bucks to buy DS and not have to worry about headaches. I wish I could enjoy WN more, they seem to have a rich history. Unfortunately I’ve had bad experiences every time I buy something from them

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience😊 I’ve had only good experiences with WN paints (as well as DS), but I think it’s great that you shared an alternative review😊

I started with the van Gogh watercolors. They are student grade and really affordable but much more pigmented than the Cotman watercolors.

I used these when I first started. Many of the colours are fugitive. Great for learning mixing. Some of the coulors are different than the professional colours.

Very interesting! The student grade paints actually made a better painting than I expected! 😮 Or maybe that's just down to the artist...

Thank you! Technique definitely makes a difference, but it’s also about your experience with the paints, and it’s for sure more pleasant to work with professional paints😊❤️

Hi Dani, great comparison ! I see that you have both Scarlet Lake from Winsor Newton and Pyrrol Scarlet from Daniel Smith. I already have Pyrrol Scarlet but it looks too orange to me, not red at all. Should I try Scarlet Lake? Are these two warm reds too close?

Hii, thank you so much😊 Yes I do have them both and Pyrrol Scarlet indeed seem a little but more orange to me, also in terms of transparency and quality I prefer Scarlet Lake, too👌

But I wouldn’t say there is a huuge difference in color, they are both warm reds🫶
