Great video to learn about mixing and not really needing expensive professional paints, thank you.

Definitely, I like using Cotman! Even though they're student grade, they're great quality! Thanks so much for watching! 💕

I don;t know Winsor newton's watercolor well enough, but honestly think Schmincke horadam and akademie are really the same if you don't layer a whole lot

Cotman colors served me well for over 2 years! I didn't like the pans but loved the tubes and found them to be brighter and more pigmented! New subscriber!!!

I totally agree! They sure last, too! 3+ years, and I've finally hit pan on some of my colors and have been replacing them with tubes. Thanks for watching, commenting, and subbing! You rock! 💖💗💕

After experimenting without so many different watercolors, I now only use the Cotmans. I bought a 24 half pan set and then added the other colors that I wanted later. Now my set is complete.

Wonderful! This is a great way to build up a set - start with a smaller one and then add to it as you learn what you like and works for you. Excellent 😃! Thank you for watching and commenting! 🥰💞

I've not tried the Windsor and Newton Professional paints yet, but I do like the Cotman pans and tubes. It seems, from your video, that the Cotman paints are not too far away from the Professional ones, which is nice to know. I'll maybe try some of the professional ones as I get better at painting. It's always nice to have options. I saw a good tip, regarding using plastic palettes. You may know it, but I'll mention it just in case. Brushing the palette with toothpaste, is good for stop the paint puddling, and also good for removing staining.

Since you've already used Cotman tubes, then you have a pretty good idea of how the professional ones will be 🙂. My Cotman set is almost 5 years old, so there's nothing I need to do with my palette. It's so worn in 😅. Plus, I always clean my palettes after every use (controversial habit, I know, lol), but yes, I've heard of the toothpaste tip; I'm sure other viewers will appreciate the tip! 👍 If staining ever gets to a point where I need to do something about it, I like to use a magic eraser, especially on metal palettes - less abbrassive 😉. Thanks for commenting/sharing, and thanks for watching! 💕

Thank you. The color mixing section was super. I intend to watch it again and write it down. I began with Cotmans, and I think they’re great and so readily available. I remember I didn’t use my professional paints when I first bought them. Now I love them.

I'm so happy you liked it!! Color mixing is such an essential thing, so I'm really glad my video can help with that! W&N make really good paints, and I agree, they're so readily available! Thanks for watching and commenting!! ❤️💓💞

Great video. It was very interesting and I love the color mixing section. I love seeing how there is quite a bit of consistency between the two lines of paint. This gives me more confidence in the Windsor and Newton brand in general.

I love the stats on this video, thank you for sharing! :D I've never heard anyone say knead in the way you do, it's always interesting to hear different accents from around the world. I learned a lot from your video. I have they Cotman set and would like to get lots of use of it. I'm not sure which colours are which because all of the paints fell out of their pans when I first got the set, but I am experimenting all the time. Thank you for the inspiration!

I'm so glad you appreciate the stats!! Oh dear, yeah, the whole knead thing... I'm multilingual, so there's a chance I mispronounced that 😅; please don't go by me on that one! Your Cotman set will go a long way, so no worries! My large set is almost 5 years old and still going strong! I'm sure you did this already, but just in case, check the side of the pans for color names - W&N usually stamps all color info on the side of each pan. I'm so happy you found this video helpful, and I'm even happier that I've inspired you!! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🥰

About the Alizarin Crimson: in the pro line, there’s both the “Permanent Alizarin Crimson,” which is completely lightfast, and “Alizarin Crimson,” which is a vintage, less lightfast color, and very few painters use. The Cotman Alizarin Crimson is the same as the professional WN “Permanent Alizarin Crimson.” You should issue a correction stating that you only talked about the vintage non-lightfast version., so your viewers aren’t misled. Otherwise, good video and thank you!

I appreciated your deep dive into Cotman vs WN Professional WCs. As an illustrator, I've been a long time satisfied user of Cotman paints. Two things I would like to note about your otherwise wonderful presentation are your incorrect pronunciation of Alizarin and your referring to the P in the color code as "pigment". A P in a color code stands for "Permanent", not pigment. Thanks for your very helpful comparison of these 2 paint brands.

Nice to hear from a fellow illustrator! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! However, I do not want viewers to get confused - the P in the Pigment Code really does stand for Pigment. For anyone who is interested: I recommend you check out the following link, which comes directly from Winsor & Newton's manufacturer's website: www.winsornewton.com/na/education/guides/how-to-read-the-label-on-a-winsor-newton-colour/ It explains in detail, complete with diagram, how to correctly read Pigment Codes (also referred to as Pigment Numbers) on their labels, which is standard for almost all of their paints, not including their colors which are proprietary. The W&N website clearly states that P stands for Pigment. The Permanence Rating used by W&N is a completely different coding system, which I also explain in the video. Those codes are AA, A, B, and C. Pigment Codes specifically are identified by their 'Color Index Generic Name' - created and managed by the Color Index International. This is a Dye and Pigment database recognized internationally as the standard for color naming and numbering. Jackson's Art, a world-renowned art supply distributor, has an excellent article explaining the Pigment Color Index. Here is the direct link: www.jacksonsart.com/blog/2021/09/06/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-pigment-colour-index/ I recommend paying close attention to the section titled 'How Does the Color Index Work?', paragraph 3. The article, which sources the Color Index International, clearly states that P stands for Pigment in all Pigment Codes.

Yes, and D stands for dyes, which penetrates paper rather than sits on top of it (which is more what pigments do).
