I like this tree so much: I can see how beautiful it will become once it gets a bit more established! Looking forward to see how it progresses… 👌👏👋

Those pots look good but they're buggers when it's time for repotting. Watched all four parts now and really enjoyed them. Thanks for sharing.

cheers, yeah they are annoying for sure haha

Looks awesome with the all those flowers... fantastic. The belly pot clearly was your friend, not often used such a aggressive grower. Shame about the root work it's been a while since a proper savaging.
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Cheers :) yeah that pot is a nightmare, and so are the roots. but thats the joy of nursery stock haha. im sure it will sort its self out soon enough
@hyperionhelios1902 жыл бұрын
You are making good progress on the roots. Worth it for that thick of a trunk on a cotoneaster. I need to let mine grow a long time to get to that size.

Great little tree you have there. I do love cotoneaster for bonsai due to its small leaves. It's also drought tolerant and very hard to kill so great as a beginner tree too.

I really like this tree and it is great hearing how you have progressed it. That root structure is a challenge for sure! I love the way these flower and also produce bright berries later. They are so forgiving of my mistakes as well :)

Cotoneasters are one of my absolute slowest trees to break dormancy - but when they do, they just explode! I loved watching you work on yours really good development strategies. Must admit - I'm still confused how to make sense of all the growth on mine lol!
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Sue. yeah you are right, they are a bit slow to get going, but are rapid when they do. Im sure yours is coming along fine.

Liking the shape of the tree. Interested to see how it develops👍. Last autumn seemed to take forever there were trees with leaves still on in December in my area.

Lovely tree, coming on well. Do you take the berries off? Been taking them off mine last couple of seasons and noticed they do grow more afterwards.

Whoa, you really nailed the scale of this with those flowers. That was pretty sick, brother. I am digging how you attacked those roots. Hopefully the recovery will produce more on the upper plain. Have you considered a tourniquet just below the upper plain? And why punish yourself with that bellied pot (hehe) I’m diggin it, brother!
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Cheers :) I dont think i will need a tourniquet, but we will see how they develop. its never not an option. as for the pot haha its a nightmare, but it was the right size at the time
@baldyeti2 жыл бұрын
@@BackGardenBonsai I was reviewing video two in this series, the last repotting. You’re right, there are more roots on the upper plain this time. So it’s getting there, just a long term project!

Looking forward to 2023 update. 😊 I've just started looking at a cottoneaster from my garden. What mix of planting medium do you use?

This is great, awesome job. I am currently trying to air layer a Contoneaser Franchetti that was in my garden from a previous owner, hoping it starts forming roots soon so I can work with it. What soil mixture are you using for this may I ask? I am thinking of using a mixture of Equal parts Compost, Perlite & Sand, do you think this would be a good mix, I have some sphagnum moss to, do you think adding that might benefit it as well? I'm quite new to bonsai but I'm trying learn more about this species so I can care for it well.
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
that cool you are air layering one. hopefully you get a decent bit of material from it. as for soil. read this www.backgardenbonsai.com/a-general-guide-to-bonsai-soil/ and it should point you in the right direction as such
