Yep, but I wish some American co. would make a modern high torq, low rev, low weight saw. If it's possible surely there's a market. The Euro saws are great but I don't like the scream. I'd gladly lose a second per cut.

I've only ever ran Sthil's mainly because I am lucky to have a awesome dealer 5 miles down the road from me . Always wanted to try a Husky but but their only available at a big box store in my area . I totally agree with ya on the fuel caps , I carry a small paint brush in my kit to clean around the o-ring and have really never had a real problem . I run a 261 , 462 and a 500i and i find myself reaching for the 261 more times than not , love that little saw .

Great video. I run 4 Sthil pro saws. I love the saws, except the air filter setup for the 661 and 500 are garbage. I am always finding dust getting under the filter and inside the engine. The filter on the 362 is a better design, and the 361 non pleated is better than any of their pleated filters. I used to have a consumer grade Husky in the early 2000s. The air filter stays clean all the time, but the saw would throw chains all the time and damage the drive links. Also used over double the gas that my 361 uses, while cutting half as fast.

Good video and you make valid points on both. I run Stihl because there are literally no Husky dealers near me that carry the XP models. I’m not really interested in the 500. I recently bought a 462 and am really impressed with its power/weight ratio. Like you I have back and neck issues. I drop the big ones with my 660 then it goes on the truck and the 462 goes to work. Don’t worry about being on a limb. The truth will set you free!

Dealer location and service is big for me. Stihl is closer and quicker service. The price difference can easily be made up in production. More gas and oil is less time fueling. Great job doing comparison. I’m also concerned about where stihl lost the weight. The newer 661 are not as robust as the old 660.

That price difference is for completely different classes of saw. The 500i is a 390xp hunter. The MS462c is more on par with the 572xp. Stihl is redefining the classes with their very impressive "between" sized saws. MS400 & MS500i. Longevity is definitely on par. After being in the big wood of Canada's left coast for over a year, the 500i is holding up fine and is a clear favorite. As for the lightweight, my father thought the 371xp/372xp was a quick engine wrapped in cheap plastic. Yet, 20 years later, everyone knows how legendary that saw is. I see the evaporation of dedicated, full service Husqvarna Group dealers, combined with the bold innovation of Stihl, is creating a gap. And it's getting bigger every year. Whilst the air filtration is still lacking in Stihl, despite the effort of utilizing an "air injection" type of intake (though strangely lacking on the 500i), at least the intake is close to straight line. Flow helps with throttle response. The proven Husqvarna intake is still using an antiquated angle between filter and cylinder. Air doesn't like flowing at 90° of angle... neither does water, nor oil, nor even earthworms for that matter.. To me, it comes down to; more power, more torque, faster throttle, with the capability of pulling more chain in bigger wood, at a full pound lighter. And its almost turnkey starting that never loses its tune. Yeah, that's worth $400. No "pass" given, it's earned.
@zack6892
@zack6892 2 жыл бұрын
Idk I think for past a 32” bar the 390 would become the more obvious choice over the 500i and 32 and below I’d want the 500. Just my opinion with a little time with both saws however sounds like you’ve got much more time on them maybe there are aspects I’m not taking in to consideration. I’ve heard a lot of issues with hot starts on auto tune saws so the 3 series big saws seem like the go to for big timber at least in my experience and the crews I’ve gotten to work with.
@Matt-416
@Matt-416 2 жыл бұрын
@@zack6892 The 3 series is absolutely epic!! I'm a huge fan! I personally believe that the 500i, 462, and 362 are directly because of how redefining the 371/372 was. It is my favorite saw too this day. But, because of OEM parts drying up, she's a shelf queen. But definitely motivating to look at. I don't play much of the "Ford vs Chevy" brand-loyalty nonsense. In my honest opinion, the MS462 feels, revs, and has the power-curve much closer to a ported 372xp than the 572xp does. The 572 feels like a bloated MS461 to me. My original point was that husky doesn't have anything to compete with the 500i in the same class. An 80cc saw with 70cc weight and 90cc power.... that's essentially turn-key. Granted, there is no replacement for displacement. However, an 80cc 500i doesn't feel far from a 90cc 390xp. Now, there's definitely a difference and it's noticable.... But nothing even approaching the difference between the power difference between a 60cc saw and a 70cc saw. Husky needs to step it up, instead of releasing heavier (& slightly more powerful) replacements for some truly epic saws. The Husqvarna 500 series isn't impressive at all. Especially when they've shut down dealer support over almost 60% of their locations and focusing primarily on Lowes and Home Depot.
@jonathanlang9711
@jonathanlang9711 Жыл бұрын
I agree at the almost turnkey part absolutely. While the newer huskys especially with a muffler mod start almost always on the first pull (as well as my older 346xp muffler modded) you still have to pump fuel in beforehand, i prefer this system tbh because you really can make sure there aint no air in the carb. Tho the newer Stihls be it a 500i or be it a 170 they are fucking turnkey. Had a MS170 on hand wouldn't start. Put a Servicekit and a good clean including a tankflush and carb cleaning to it. It started first pull with a completely dried out carb I honestly don't get how this is even possible, no pumping no second pull nothing. No matter how fucking cold, next day it had -10°C and it would always start on a coldstart on the first damn pull.

While I can't say exactly, but the weight maybe the weight of the carb. Im not sure totally. But I agree with you on the where the weight went from. Im a stihl guy and work at a stihl dealer and the 500's are hard to come by for us in PA anyhow. I have yet to lay hands on one. Thought on the air filter is add some sorta foam on the back of the cover just to make sure it pushed down. I know you shouldn't have too. But it will be cheap insurance. Thanks for makeing the vids.

These saws have been out long enough to have been put through the paces. What never seems to be mentioned is what is the fuel consumption difference between the Stihl and Husky. This should also be a consideration when purchasing. I am glad you address this. I have watched a lot of vids comparing the 70cc class and as far as speed of cut its very negligible between similar sized saws. So comfort (anti-vibe) and fuel efficiency in my mind are very important factors when choosing a saw. Dealer support is also important in the rare case you have issues. Fuel leaks on a now $1600 dollar saw is almost criminal. This should not be tolerated on a pro level saw from any manufacturer.

The way I look at the Stihl fuel injected saw is that at least it's a starting point, are they perfect? No! I don't own one or have ever even ran one but to at least get a working model into the market gives room for all kinds of improvements. That's how you make things better, figure out the weak points and improve on them. As far as the Husky Auto Tune I have no idea, I'm not familiar with them but in this video it seemed to cut smoother than the Stihl. The idea is to compare and improve wherever possible! 👍

Guys that use the 500i to make a living with are finding out where the weight savings are coming from. The plastics are thin and the air filter cover doesn’t lock down correctly to hold the air filter. The top cover gets rattling very quickly. The clutch drum is thinner than other similar saws like the 462. The bar plate is thinner and some have worn through into the crankcase/ oil tank. Awesome saw but I don’t think it will last.

I personally like the Stihl chain tensioner better than the Husky. I feel like the cover really only needs to do that job. For instance, if you're in the field working and for some reason your side cover got broke. If the tensioner were busted on the Husky, you would have a hard time keeping the bar chain tight. The Stihl would still function as it's supposed to ( even though it would require the operator to be more careful than they normally would). I like what you said about how far technology has come on both saws. Either of the saw would be excellent choices for someone looking for a professional saw that's not so hard on your back.

For every person that likes one brand you will find a person who likes another. I like the Stihls, I've got all the pro saws from the 880 to the 261 and 200t. Now at the end of the day what's the answer to 9 out 10 questions, money. Stihl is by orders of magnitude the best selling saw in the history of saws. Now with that let the hateful comments pour in I'm ready.

@@cotontop3 I have to agree with Mike... The Stihl was chattering through the log, and audibly the Stihl was not revving as fast as the Husky. Maybe that was a result of the grind on the teeth or height of the depth gauges (no offense Tim). I've always believed that the Husky's run a higher RPM than Stihl, but the Stihl has more torque. Would you mind addressing the difference in smoothness and RPM's please?

The chain on the stihl had not had the depth gauges touched at the time this video was filmed. That was one of the things I was talking about in the video I was trying to figure out what the stihl chain liked filing wise. I finally figured it out and got it smooth last week but I am not a fan of the stihl chain.

I liked this video much better than the 261 verses the 550 . I haven't owned a Husqvarna since they started making inboard clutches .I cut firewood an clean up brush. If u cut a lot of brush even if use the top of the bar u will sometimes throw a chain an I can get back to cutting much faster an less hassle with the inboard clutch .

The 500i IMO is over rated and the hype is what's selling it. Look up Egan Performance Saws on Facebook and check out his Straight Shot mufflers. On a MS462 he has a dyno chart where it gained a .5hp on a stock saw and its 15 bucks cheaper than the barkbox. The Durbin Compound done a comparison video with stock muffler, Barkbox and the Straight shot. The Straight shot was faster and ran cooler than the other 2.

In fairness with the scale weigh in, the Sugi bars are a bit heavier than the Stihl lights. Stihl actually has the lightest line of guide bars. Followed by Oregon, then Sugis. There is also the Tusumara line up but I'm not aware of where they fall in the weigh in. BTW the Holtz bars, that are SS with replaceable sprocket noses, are made by Tusumara. Although those are not lightweights. As to the AutoCrap, MoronicTronic, and fuel injection ..... I prefer the carb run saws that the evil EPA dislikes. My 261C went down and because I'm not equipped to diagnose the chip, I had to drop it off at the dealer. I prefer to wrench on my own stuff. Anyways, enjoy your saws friends.

@@dennisgt479 Odd, my new Stihl 94R string trimmer has a plain screw in cap. Reps probly have to say something. The best thing for Stihl to do at this point is admit Husqvarna improved their idea and improve their own. The quarter turn would save time if it didn't leak. It also prevents over tightening. If I had one I would work on it myself.

So is the 550xp still a good saw. I had thought about going back to a stihl but the two that I owned both were terrible very underpowered compared to the Huskies in the same class and very difficult start even following the manufacturers directions they just continued to flood out once they were warm if you could get it started, it was not an issue. I have never seem to have a problem with any other manufacturer. That said I know tons of people who will only use stihl. my uncle has an older one he has had for years since I was little and it still runs flawless, but I just haven’t had good luck. I’m just curious which brand you prefer to run. It seems like you run stihl more. I don’t need a huge saw I do like something that’s light weight But also very durable my plan is a 50 cc and then something in the 60 to 70 cc range for bigger stuff

Follow up to my previous comment. The 545XP is back and running well. I did buy a MS500i on a 25”. And have already dealt with a few beech 36-42” dia. and some big ash, sycamore+. The new 500i runs well but there three observations I have that nobody else mentions: •it’s a real pain to start when cold, 6-8 pulls, it runs for 5secs. then cuts out, then it’s another 4 pulls and let it tick-over for 10-20secs. Then and only then will it run smoothly. •it ate a well greased clutch bearing in 3mths. I found the cage race but the needles had disappeared, not one remained. So I’ve now bought a new bearing with three spares. I’m not going to trust one of those bearings past 12wks. Compared to running Aspen, a clutch bearing every 12wks is inexpensive. •the oil filler cap must be wiped or brushed clean every time, before being replaced. That prevents leakage but I still only ever rest the saw on its side. Why oh why can Stihl think their awkward caps, are anything less than a pain in the neck?

I seen auto tune spark plugs and the colour is not dark enough for me. Where as the Stihl is a nice dark brown sparkplug. And I do agree Stihl pulls harder. Keep up the great work mate!
