Wool Cotswold Indy hat review!
In my opinion, this is a more reasonably priced and better accurate wool version of an Indy hat than the Dorfman Pacific crushable.
That being said, this will likely NOT stand up to the weather conditions like a rabbit or beaver hat; rabbit, nutria and beaver are just better quality felts.
For the price, this will make a great ‘starter’ hat for the fedora newcomer or stunt hat for those action shots in your film.
Made in England from thick wool, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was impressed with this hat; the folks at Cotswold take pride in their work and it shows.

Just bought this hat thanks to your review; came in the mail today, so far I am really liking it. I wanted an Indy style hat, but want to wear it on a more regular basis and not for cosplay, so I felt like this was a good choice. Thanks for your videos!

I shaped my hat into the raiders look and changed the sweatband to leather and it looks fantastic

Hi great review I felt the same about it, right up to when the cold damp weather arrived in the UK. Then it started to sag and lost its shape quickly. Perhaps I could have added some stiffener but the cost of messing about vs getting the Federation I|V was a no brainier for me. Took mine to the local charity shop so someone can use it for Halloween, else it would have been sitting on a shelf, and that’s not a good life for a hat.

Ahhh. That’s a real shame that it responded so poorly to the cold and wet of winter because after just a few minutes of wearing the hat I noticed how warm my head had become. Donating the hat was a great move. I really appreciate your input, thank you! And thank you for your kind words!

That's unfortunate, I was curious on how this hat handles rain, the dorfman Pacific my dad's had for years is his rain hat and has handled the rain really well, it's starting to show it's age so I thought this would be a good alternative but apparently not.

That’s a real bummer that the hat gave up like that. The Dorfman that I bought many moons ago handled a couple of rains and then really shrank. That’s when I invested in a Fed IV; the Fed was the bug that bit me. A wonderful hat making me wonder what all products were out there in Hatland. That’s awesome that your dad’s hat has held up so well!

I'm waiting on mine. They just switched the shipping from FedEx to DHL. My head size is a snug 57cm. I wouldn't go up any further then 58cm if I had to go bigger on a hat though.

I received my Cotswold fedora today. It looks good. It is a little snug but I think the next size up would be to big at 59cm. The color is better then I thought based on there website picture. Thanks. I would not have heard of Cotswold Country Hats if it wasn't for your video.@@HatLifeAdventures

Living in Vancouver BC, a very damp place, this is not for me. You are correct that once get hat you like to wear, you WILL buy more hats. :) I have also improved and expanded my wardrobe as a direct result of buying hats again. It is a cold and snowy dat in Vancouver,. I am wearing my Harris tweed newsboy cap. Those are good for misty wet climates.

On my Dorfman Pacific, I did use some 3M Scotchgard years ago and it worked great. The Cotswold says that it has waterproofing but I think that if I had to go out in the rain in it, I might go ahead and shoot some Scotchgard on it.

I was gonna get one for my son and wanted your opinion on sizing. He's a 58 1/2 cm. Didn't know if I should get a 59 or 61. I was worried if I get a 59 and it shrinks there'd be less room to play with. Where if I get the 61 we can just pad it. We live in the pacific northwest so tons of rain.

Well, being a wool hat, the Cotswold isn’t going to take the rain like a fur felt hat. You might want to try some Scotchgard in a small spot on it at first (to make sure that it won’t discolor the felt) before you treat the whole hat. Going up to a 61 isn’t a bad idea if the hat can take the rain. That’s probably what I would do: get a 61 and scotchgard it.

I know your expertise is in felt hats, but I would love to hear if you have any knowledge on straw hat care! Got my first Panama hat today and I would love to hear your insights on how to care for it and make it last!

Hey! Congratulations on your first Panama! I want to know what you got! Pretty much all the aspects of caring for a felt hat apply to panamas. Don’t store it near heat, rest it on its crown or hang it when not in use, don’t be overly aggressive in handling it when it’s wet and brush it when it gets dusty. You even steam it to get it back to proper shape if it’s been deformed somehow. Just make sure that it’s nice and soft before you start molding it or you might crack the straw. Over time, the hat itself will soften and not be so rigid - if it’s not soft already, that is. I really appreciate your compliment but I’m no expert, just a Joe Schmo who loves hats and loves learning about them! Again, congratulations and I wanna know what you got! Kris

This is my first Panama (I’ve mostly stuck with felt hats until now) so I bought a relatively in expensive Stetson Panama called the “Adventurer”. It’s a decent starter hat, but I think I’d definitely like a hat that I can play around with and mold a little more, this one is very stiff. I’m sure that’s the case with most panamas but I’ve heard the finer the quality the more similar they are to felt. Once again thanks for the awesome info, Kris!
