If you notice they mention in the dialogue that the Gorbals has been gentrified and that this Kochanski lived there and went to a posh virtual boarding school- thus making this very posh version of the character come from a traditionally working-class area of Glasgow to tie in with the original Kochanski's accent.
@Martin-xd4jl7 ай бұрын
The really bizarre thing if you actually live in Glasgow is that this joke has now basically happened in real life. I wouldn't say it's a 'posh' area now, but in the ten years after this episode was written they demolished all the rough old crumbling flats, and replaced them with a really nice modern neighbourhood. It's definitely well on the way to what Kochanski is describing!

If you get a chance the Red Dwarf books (1 - Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and 2 - Better than Life) fill in a lot of back story and, of course, flesh out the characters more. The Kochanski character is an educated officer from a well off family. She went to the best schools (and had a pony). This version of Kochanski fits that well. The original Kochanski was more a an enlisted less educated type (before anyone hates me for this, I was enlisted in the US Air Force and had a BD in Computer Science). Basically Kochanski was, on paper, out of Dave's league, so when their brief relationship ended, Dave was broken up about is and determined to find a a way to end his tour on Red Dwarf as quickly as possible, which is how he ended up in stasis (by his own design). The 3 million year detour was a surprise.

Just a kinda random comment. As a Czech, I watched Red Dwarf exclusively with a Czech dubbing when I was a kid (and a completely unrelated fact = Chris Barrie and Craig Charles recently visited Prague for our ComicCon 2024, hurray!). Anyway, I enjoy both the original and CZ voice acting. But in the case of Kochanski, I think that the CZ dubbing was the reason why her character grew on me almost instantly. I am not saying that Cloe is doing something wrong. But in comparison, her CZ voice really gave her a somewhat unique and more likable/charismatic feel. It's hard to describe. But now, when I rewatch the whole series with you, she feels a little bland in comparison.

If I’m not mistaken it could be maybe thanks to the fact that it was same voice actress as in season one. I haven’t seen RD in Czech for a while so I could be wrong.

This episode is the closest we get to a "filler" episode this season. Eight episodes were stretching the budget, so Duct Soup was a late, cheaper replacement for the episode that was originally planned, Identity Within. I never really thought about the stereotypes you talked about in the post-watch. I'd always interpreted Kochanski's weirdness in this episode as being more a result of being trapped on/with a bonkers mirror version of her own ship and crew. Less "crazy because female hysteria" and more "crazy because more alone than any human has ever been" if that makes any sense. (I am typing this while slightly uh "elevated" so I may be rambling.) But now that you bring it up I'm certainly thinking about it more.

I was going to mention in the last episode something I didn't realise until recently rewatching the series (the last time I watched series VII was probably when it originally aired), the retconning of Kochanski and other stuff can be explained by what Lister was explaining in the first episode, that elements of two timelines were incorporated into one as the timeline tried to correct itself. It's led me to making more allowances for changes in my own re-watching (BBC iPlayer has all the episodes up for the next month or so for anyone in the UK!), and I'm enjoying it more this time around... I'm still not a fan of the changes in Kryten's personality though, it's still a little cringey for me 😆

It's more that Kochanski was from a rich family, ivy league and a career officer line than just cliche "woman stuff". It's why she's not as much of a complete ass like Rimmer. And unlike Rimmer, she's actually competent in her role as a navigations officer and not an utterly self-absorbed cowardly bastard like Rimmer is/was. Also keep in mind in her universe Lister also applied himself (much like he did in Ace's original timeline). In this episode she's still in the "culture shock" phase of adapting to being stuck with The Boys from the Dwarf. Obviously, the writers are going to up-play some of the cliche "woman stuff". But the hilarity of that mostly comes from how many literal years The Boys have been without any actual female interactions.

I agree with you, Kat, about the laugh track. And I have an interesting fact about such things... I'm sure you know that a lot of shows, including Red Dwarf I-VI, where possible, were filmed in front of a live audience, and in those cases, the laughter is recorded directly from that. And you also know that in cases in which there was not an audience, like this series of Red Dwarf, the laughter was recorded from an audience being shown the episode, and it's therefore still "genuine". Most people are ok with that kind of laughter because it feels like watching the show as part of an audience and doesn't have that presumptuous, fake, tacked on feel to it. Here's the interesting trivia though; Quite a few British shows of the era did use "canned" laughter, and that laughter, a lot of the time, was taken from studio recordings of "A bit of Fry and Laurie", (a sketch show written and performed by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Yes, "House"). Legend has it that the audiences laughed so much and were recorded so well that the tapes became the go to for BBC canned laughter. Ironically, on the DVDs of that show, though they do use the audience's laughter track, it is mixed so clumsily that many mistakenly believe it to be canned.

Yeah, the sheer volume of changes is probably why it didn't go down well. "They added a girl, show's over" likely was the view of some, but the changes were far wider. I think Kochanski's new personality is less about making her stereotypically female, and more about making her the anti-Lister. Making her as opposite to Lister as possible to create more conflict. But I could be wrong. And it would be interesting to know how the old Kochanski would have dealt with these situations. That said, I've never had a problem with this version of Kochanski, I Love Chloe Annett's version!
@ChristopherStendeck7 ай бұрын
I'm glad I can talk about this now. I'm all for bringing back Kochanski, if Clare Grogan was available and interested. Failing that, someone that looks a little like her, or at the very least, at the very, very, very smegging least, has a Glaswegian accent. You know what? Any kind of Scottish accent, might do at a push. I might have been won round. I was with Kryten after all. But Chloë Annett is NOTHING like Kochanski. She doesn't even try the accent, despite, in this episode for example, restating she is from the Gorbals (in Glasgow). It's one of the things for me that makes this era of Red Dwarf a little harder to fully accept.

I know this is going to be very unpopular but I prefer Chloe Annett to Clare Grogan. Clare Grogan is good (she is fantastic as a Sinead O'Connor parody in 'Father Ted') but I don't think her version of Kochanski really works as a regular character given she's essentially a less slobby more competent female Lister. Chloe Annett has some dated stereotypes written to her character but as an out of place neurotic she's a better fit for the dysfunctional crew we have and to be honest I just like her more as an actress.
@beauxguss63217 ай бұрын
Duct Soup was S7s version of Marooned. With Kryten going all codependent (as you say) it lacks the genuine feel of Marooned. I do think the story itself was important to do as an exploration of Kochanski's character dynamic, but it is this change to Kryten that many feel was a big part of the downfall of RD. Until the next evolution of the interpersonal relationships, this will get a bit annoying. But it also brings on some excellent bits as well. I just think they wanted to fast forward Crissy's integration and it is her conflict with Kryten that acts as a replacement for the old Lister/Rimmer dynamic. Maybe could have been done better, but after Barrie pulled out, they had to slap together whatever they could. IMHO, Duct Soup is one of the worst episodes of RD... which means it's only better than 90% of all other shows ever.
