Absolutely - it won me, and the curved walkway was a lovely light point of difference. I could totally see that the overall design would work with the walkway Macenna and Romeo have already done.

POV of a 50+ year gardener and landscape designer: #1 is the best choice, especially for a novice gardener, wanting a dramatic impact Arbors, fountains, swings, etc can be added later, once the landscape has been lived in.

I love how the first one feels airy, whimsical, and light. Especially with the walk way being curved some, BUT I think it needs the organic paver stone walkway to the side of the house like in 2! Especially for your family, friends, and other guests you may want to invite for a gathering or whatever where going into the front door isn't necessary. Also, imagine if you got married in your own backyard.

I believe #2 would be best because it works with what you have already. Less cost. I like that this landscaper also had plants up at the fence so that when you’re inside looking out, you see some beautiful color.

#2 gives you the option to get to the backyard and porch, which is wonderful for entertaining.

Number one is stunning. The curved path encourages you to wander along the pathway and enjoy the front yard, it isn't as obvious!! It creates a lot more interest! The designers planting is more simple but incredibly effective. So may people concentrate in the inside of the house but the outside is what sets the tone and can create a beautiful piece of artwork for the street!! So important.

I think the first design is a great start. I think in time it could develop to your cottage dreams that the third one touched on, but the first is good for someone with the busy busy lifestyle you have now.

Best sponsor yet! Love all the ideas! I’d keep it simple at first, so I’d go with #1, but maybe squeeze in a pergola somewhere. I also liked the curved walkway. Their renditions are really cool! You could borrow from each one.

Design #2 with the curved beds is lovely, especially with the straight path. I love the idea of doing climbing plants on the front corners of the part of the house that comes forward (the dining room exterior). Maybe the same kind of climbing plant that will be on the fence? You could also do the pergola bench/swing from #3, maybe over on the far right backing onto the bamboo?

The first landscape rendering was so beautiful. Lots of plants and shrubs but still let’s your house shine. I did like the stepping stones to the backyard in #2 though. The choice of basket weave with the border on the walkway was a perfect choice. Excellent work, yet again!

My dad did our pavers himself the past two years. His process was much more complicated. He put crushed concrete and leveled it and then put slack sand and leveled it and THEN put the pavers. I don't know if the base will work for our land but thank you for showing such an easy way to put pavers! I will have to show him and maybe it will reduce the amount of work and materials he needs for the backyard. Can't wait to see how everything turns out!

Definitely design #1 is perfect! Low maintenance and still cottage cozy. Since you don’t live there full time, you don’t want vines roses and overgrown trees. They look nice in initial design but they will overgrow. Keep it simple and easy. Looking forward to spring planting!

I like the first landscape design plan best. Simple, yet elegant. It also seems like the easiest to care for, especially since you are planning to spend half your time in TX and half your time in CA. I live in Austin, and I know how difficult it can be to keep plants alive in the warmer months.

as someone who lives not far from you in Texas, i kind of disagree with others saying plant in fall/winter. i've had the best luck planting in mid march and very early april. haven't had anything die on me, even in the drought conditions this year!

Option number two design brings a softness to the exterior of the home. You have some formal touches with your fence and brick. Once you add the railing to the porch you will want some curves. Don’t use weed fabric in your flower beds. Even with low maintenance yards you will still have maintenance twice a year in order to keep everything healthy and happy. I would suggest you go talk with a landscape designer or at the very lease a local garden center (not box store) for suggestions on native plants for your area. So…Zone 8…you can be planting even now since your ground doesn’t have a deep freeze. If you start planting in the cooler weather it will allow your plants to take root before the heat comes. It’s nice that you have the tall mature trees in your front yard…although it could change the type of plants you can plant. There are so many other factor to take into consideration. Love the walkway…great start to a beautiful home.

Austin gardener here - look at Oakleaf hydrangea for a big white-blooming shrub for east facing beds (morning sun). My favorite salvia (bushy purple flowers) is Mexican bush sage, which does best in full sun. Roses do really well here in full sun! They are super tough plants, but deer will eat the flowers. For deer proofing, look for native plants, plants with fuzzy leaves, or plants with strongly scented leaves, as deer don’t like those. 100% recommend going to a local garden center for plant advice (by local I mean small business, not a big box store) - I learned the very hard way that Texas climate makes most mainstream plant suggestions completely obsolete 😂 Natives are generally sooooo much easier to grow = more ease & enjoyment of your garden. If you’re ever in Austin, the Natural Gardener is an incredible organic/natives-focused plant center.

Take into account that you live in an area that's prone to drought. The only things that can survive drought are "weeds" also known as native plants that evolved to live in your area. Check out your local nurseries. There are a lot of beautiful plants that grow native to your area. Also, you should consider how much sun or shade tolerance a plant has as well.

This is beautiful!! I love the work you do! Also, did you know that there is a specific sand that you use to fill in the cracks? You basically do what you where doing and then spray it with water and it sets (like the mortar you talked about). It worked really nice when I did that to my own pavers. It keeps more weeds away as well. Just for an additional perfect. Just because my OCDness 😂. Anyways, you’re work is phenomenal!! I love your style!

I like plan 1 and how you can see the yard and as you stated it doesn't block the view of the cottage. I also love a curved walkway. In plan two I liked the warmth of the pavers but i found a lot of the foliage blocked the view maybe a but of editing. Something doesn't quite feel correct on the third plan. The walkway is offset in plan three but the stone entrance is directly in front of the door in real life?
