After living in our pre civil war home on 23 acres of land, caring for that 12 room house, raising 4 children and a menagerie of animals, we very smartly put it up for sale and built, in the village, our repro New England saltbox. When we moved into this 7 room handicapped accessible home I was 65 yrs old. At 81 I realize how smart we were. Growing older is challenging all by itself. Well done you!!!

My husband and I decided to put in a pool and pool house a few years ago for instant gratification while our kids are still young. Yes, we refinanced our house to do it. Yes, we know that's a risk. But, YES!! It has been worth every worry and penny! We spend our entire summer out there together! We have so much more family time out there together than we ever have! Absolutely worth it!

Well hello fellow risk taker. In 1983 we installed our in ground pool. From then on we were the house the kids wanted to come to. Between volleyball courts, horses to ride, horseshoe pit and oh, softball if there was a place to gather it was our house. We had strict rules and yet they still came. NO REGRETS , but fond memories.

Just a thought. A water feature would be the icing on the cake in the back garden. Perhaps positioned nearby to your groaning board and soon to be installed new casement windows you could hear it from indoors and while outdoors. There's an empty space there now by flag stones. More topiaries or conifers you mentioned may be just that, more plantings. A water feature could delight many senses. Whatever you do, it's gonna be more than fine. We have a cement three tiered one. I surrounded its base with beautiful black polished pond rocks.

@anneedens3202 Жыл бұрын
I agree. It is a wonderful investment in her home, paid for by the sale of her former home and garden. But for those wondering how much a big job can cost, I can tell you my landscaping re-vamp (which was significantly smaller than Linda's) cost around $4K. BTW, I do not have a large yard, and the back yard is fenced. I already had great hardscape in the landscape and I had an old irrigation system that needed repair but not installation. I had all of the overgrown, high maintenance, dead, and underperforming shrubs and foundation plantings (around 20-30, I lost count) torn out on all sides of my house and in the naturalized area in the backyard. When it was all said and done, I had 2 large palms, a water oak, two pine trees, 3 muhley grass clumps, a bunch of Society Grass (which was dug up and divided and replanted), and a couple of ligustrum (which were severely pruned back) left in the yard. I also had 5 azaleas that I had installed 3 years ago after the two giant Arbor Vita died and had to be removed. I spent around $1k at that time with that and having the overgrown landscaping brought under some semblance of control. I installed 8 dwarf Purple Daydream Lorepetelum, 5 spiderweb Fatsia, 4 Cordelyn, 3 Miss Scarlett Anise, 3 Bobo hydrangeas, 3 Little lime hydrangeas, and one additional hydrangea whose name slips my mind. All of these plants in 3-gallon containers averaged about $45 each. I also added a Chinese Fringe tree, two Natchez Crepe Myrtles, and one Rhapsody Crepe Myrtle. These were all 15-gallon sized trees and all of the Crepe Myrtles ran $99 each with the Chinese Fringe tree $179. I also added 8 Dragon's Breath Celesoia which I picked up from Walmart for about $9 each and 6 hostas at $12 each. The total cost for plants, not counting some random and stray perennials and ferns I picked up, was $2,195. All plants came from a local nursery (Brownswood Nursery on James Island, SC), and the salesman who helped me was incredibly patient and knowledgable. I also had a consultation with Jim Putnam of HortTube as part of my planning (but not included in my total), worth every penny. He is so knowledgeable about plants. I forgot to mention that I also added 2 butterfly bushes which were another $100, I also needed mulch, which I got for free through Chip Drop. I went through almost 17 yards of mulch (almost a full dump truck) in my yard---I have a mid-sized natural area in the back in addition to planting beds around my house--but it cost $350 in labor to get it spread. I also had sod laid in an area of the front lawn where a "proscenium stage" of about 12 old, well-established, take-the-house-over-if-you-let-them Lorepetelum projected into the front lawn in front of my porch. I am almost 70 and cannot do the labor, so that cost another $1800, and well worth it to get it done quickly and in the increasingly hotter weather. This included the tear out of over 20 ugly and overgrown shrubs and the installation of the new, mulch installation, and repairs to my irrigation system. All told, between plants and labor, it cost right at $4k, and was something I had been planning and saving for almost 4 years since purchasing my house. There is more I would like to do, but I have the foundation for my garden in and now I want to let it grow to see what needs to be added. Everything I put in was put in with an eye to low maintenance (little trimming/pruning) and color coordination with my house and trim (grey with burgundy trim shutters and door). I will be adding a bunch of perennials next spring for a pollinator garden. I have a very shady back and side yards, so I am limited on where I can put sun lovers. At some point I am going to have some brick edging installed around the back natural area and will be adding plants to the naturalized area. I still have about $1k I had originally budgeted to spend next year. So, now you have some idea of what to budget if you want to do a fairly comprehensive update of your landscaping. Again, I had the hardscape and irrigation system, which needed repair, in place, so my costs were all plants and labor. You will save significantly if you can do the work yourself you will save a lot. You can save even more by purchasing smaller plants (I am like Linda, I don't have the time for plants to grow from small specimens).

Hi Linda - I like your laundry room but I would not recommend a sconce. What I would recommend that you consider is a Victorian Drying Rack on a pulley. You have lots of ceiling height and could easily put one in. You don’t have that much drying space in your room and this would add considerably. I have one myself and find it invaluable. They are very old fashioned but also look very beautiful. Mine has vintage iron end plates with wood slates in between and my hubs stained the wood slates to match my laundry room shelves. Everyone that sees it wants one for their house. It is in constant use and yet it isn’t obstructive.

Definitely place a battery light/sconce above the Laundry door to the basement. Power outages in OK are frequent 🌪️ I gasped with surprise when you revealed the BRICK facade on the steps 🥰. Absolutely Gorgeous!! Love the Laundry Room 🪴

I love all your projects! You have a beautiful design eye. If someone on KZbin has an issue with the cost of your projects, phooey on them! Might as well take care of your projects and enjoy your home and yard!

Our backyard is our happy place! We moved in almost 20 years ago and had basically a blank slate. It’s been so gratifying to look back at photos and see the changes. One of the best additions was a lovely brick path to my husband’s shed. A fountain and an arbor (where my Peggy Martin rose lives) are other beauties. I am so proud you did your backyard all at once! You truly are an inspiration to “live a beautiful life”!

Hi Linda, your backyard is going to be abundantly gorgeous! Love the "shallow" steps concept and the brick as an added statement! The design of steps certainly makes taking the stairways much easier! (Certainly, at my age)!LoL! Love all you do!

I do love the brick\paver sitting area & the brick edge to the steps, that is sheer genius!! You have a great sense of place & how to create it. Love it all. I don't think the light over the door is needed but I do think someone suggested painting the door to match the cabinets, I think that would give you the pop that area needs. Love all that you do & your organizing mind makes me envious.

Re light in laundry room, it doesn’t need it for light. For jewelry sake, perhaps you can add something. Re charging station, I love that idea. Get your electric guy to work! Outdoor looks fantastic!

Linda, your laundry room is darling. I suggest you have a multi prong outlet in the counter area. You need it. Maybe two outlets on the back wall. Install a larger light over the basement door. I think it will give a "Casablanca" movie feel with Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall.

It is amazing how quickly you have designed your garden and brought that design to its desired look. Also the interior as well has come together in a short time. It is both lovely and practical. I also am at the age that I prefer to get things done, according to the budget I have, to make my life simpler yet beautiful and comfortable.

For more of a cohesive living room /dining area back patio look, maybe a curved wicker/ rattan sofa, or an ell shaped one, would look nice. Similar to your dining chairs. It would be more comfy and look more like a living room. We use those pieces for naps too. Sunbrella fabrics are so durable and now on 7 years from purchase. Although, we do bring in cushions during stormy weather and pop them in our garage.

The cottage is magnificent. At my age I choose things a little different than I would at 35. And since I am more established, I would pay for somone to do something for me, that I easiely could have done wgen I was younger. Totally your business, some folks seem to be busy bodys and need to just enjoy the process, and the beauty. Enjoy.

My thoughts on a sconce above the door. Not every inch of the wall needs something on it, and it would be a pain to get up there and get it down to recharge. The garden and laundry room look so lovely.

Light in the Laundry room. It will be very helpful if electricity goes out and you need to go to your basement. A black umbrella would be nice over the table, and you can always move the tan one around if needed. Y'all have some brutal summers! The charging area will be excellent. Your home and garden are really coming together! Of course you should go for getting it the way you want! You and hubs have worked hard for your comfort, no need to explain!

It all is becoming more beautiful every time! A thing to think about is, by the table by the window if there is enough standingspace. If people can help themselves at that table, it becomes a gathering space, so perhaps you need a little more room. So perhaps don't plant to close to that side.
