It is the case only since 2004. It comes from the USA and the UK trying to justify the invasion of Irak to their people. Since France opposed this invasion in the UN, their heavy propaganda, mostly in the USA, ended up saying "France doesn't want to support us in Irak because they are the cowards who surrendered in WWII". Whilst fighting the Italian invasion in second world war a French machine gun squad of three or so men caused over 3,000 casualties in a single battle. The French aren’t cowards, if anything they’re idiots for believing Erwin Rommel and surrendering thinking they had already been defeated. It’s really just a weird clusterfuck and the Nazi’s getting “lucky”. Germany is the country with some of the worst history and losses yet still look good doing it. In WW2, Germany took ridiculous risks and it somehow worked basically.
