For some of us kids in the 1970s, the only entertainment was radio, and listening to such greats as CCR. We would tape their songs, and listen to them over and over again. It wasn't a time of plenty, but we were none the worse for it. The Seventies were special.

Before social media we didn't have the benefit of people influencing others with their misery. Because of this, it might not ever be the same as it was before we got so "smart". But music is the best time traveling device we have available to us. So, enjoy friend.

Actually, it was written 82 years ago by Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly. There are many covers of this song. The best known versions of Cotton Fields are that of The Beach Boys as well as that of CCR.

This just randomly popped up while listening to my local radio. I'm not a "farm" or "ranch" person. I always grew up in a city. I was born after 2000. I generally don't like country music. I'm not even american, nor have visited a place similar to the one describe in this song. And yet, somehow, this song makes me feel at home

@@MassimilianoSpano Yes, you could say the United States Government expropriated my land. My older brother and I had a profitable farming business. We expanded our operation without getting prior consent from a low level government employee. The employee foreclosed on our farm loans in retaliation and drove both of us off our lands. Today, 42 years later, I am still very mad at what my government can do to farmers. I am 77 years old now. Thank you for your concern, it helps me live.

I'm retired now and spend a little time each day listening to music. Let's always keep the classic songs alive. Thanks and take care.

I saw CCR in concert in 1972 as a graduation from high school present from my brother. They were great. Doug Cliffords hands while drumming were just a blur. Anyone who Lived in the 60's and 70's would know this song was a folk FAVORITE!!!!! My sisters and I would have SO MUCH fun dancing to this when we were very small!!! While we were at my Aunt & Uncle's house in Virginia, My uncle found this song and played it. My Aunt & Uncle started dancing with my cousins and we all cheered them!!! Then my mother said, " You haven't seen anything yet"!!!! Then my mother, My Aunt Rose, My sisters Eva, Nancy, Caroline, and me got up and just ripped the patio up!!!! My girlfriend Debbie FREAKED OUT!!!! we got done and we all hugged and kissed my girlfriend Debbie!!! My mother was crying and held all of us!!! She Said, " These kids were Children when they first heard this"!!! My Aunt Rose replied, " These kids NEVER lost their touch"!!!! I told Debbie, " honey!!! Eva and I used to just have so much fun dancing to this and we taught Caroline and Nancy how to dance to this as well!!!!

Beautifully sung and played and says true things. For most of us, our Mothers rocked us in our cradles when we were babies, to make us sleep, and it is true if the cotton balls rot, you cannot get much cotton from them. One of my favorite songs this one is really worth to listen.

My dear aunt Olie gave birth to her daughter and went right back to picking cotton. Back in the hills of Arkansas. So I am told. She had some cotton ball in a wooden bowl setting on the coffee table.

You poor soul. 😉 I first learned this song along with another Huddie William Ledbetter song Boil Weavil in 1959 in 1st grade in Kentucky. Guess I at least had a better musical education. 😁 As Brown versus the Borad of Education of Topeka Kansas had not reached Kentucky at this time, it would seem that my white school would be one that would not have been teaching songs written by a Black Man, go figure. 🤔

Real American music! Stunningly pleasant to listen to! Thanks to the authors for this music! I am writing on behalf of Russian fans who are nostalgic for the times when there was peace. Health to you and pure reason. The old dictator will not be able to force us to destroy each other. Everything will be fine.

I used to sing this in mid 60's. I don't recall whose recording I was singing. Lead Belly wrote it in the 40's. Actually in high school quite often a group of us boys would sing it between classes. My grandpa and uncle raised cotton. That stuff could cut your fingers. About a month ago I was in Shreveport at food joint. This came on the PA. I and an older woman sang this song. Had a good time, laughing and cutting up.

I remember being at an important exam back in 1970. I was nervous and this wasn`t helped by the fact that I was suffering a complete blank. Suddenly this song sprang into my mind. I started to relax and this lead to me to remembering the necessary info to get through the exam. Since then I´ve been a strong fan.

My favorite version of this song. When I was 4 yrs. old I helped my Grandfather pick cotton by hand, not a machine. That was in the early '60's. Wouldn't take all the money in the world for that experience and would do it again just to spend time with my Grandfather, as you can tell I loved my Grandfather very, very much. He was my best friend. There will never be another friend like that in my life.
