My mom and dad used to pick cotton in Oklahoma when I was a kid. She would place me on her bag which got dragged along in the field. This song brings back lots of memories. It was something my mom sang often as we grew up. ♥️

Contrary to much popular belief, my family were VERY poor back in the '40's and '50's, lived in Georgia and Alabama, and PICKED COTTON. They were white, but that made no difference because there was poverty among whites and blacks alike, and if you didn't put out the work you didn't eat. My gosh, did it ever produce STRONG, resolute people! Music kept you going sometimes--make a guitar out of a cigar box, grab a washboard & howl away...😄

"Cotton Fields" is a song written by blues musician Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly, who made the first recording of the song in 1940. Since then it's been recorded by other musicians more than 15 times. Here's our version...

As I have commented previously my grandfather met and even arrested Lead Belly on a couple occasions and some of his songs were written or inspired while he was working on the Chain Gang and my grandfather was Forman for the Louisiana prison system road building chain gang while Lead Belly was serving time. My grandfather often told stories about him entertaining them while taking a break but Lead Belly wasn't the only one, many of the prisoners would sing to pass the time.

i´m 60 and a musican myself - two years ago we made some backings for two young hiphoppers who had a street singer with them for female harmony vocals - during a rehearsal pause she sang this song sort of to herself - i heard it and asked where she knew it from, she said her mama had played it when she was young - i also know it since my childhood - so now i started to download some versions i could find on youtube (ha, even creedence clearwater revival!) when i just stumbled across this version here - absolutely gorgeous!!!!! love the whole "playing for a change" series... :-) love and greetings to all you listeners out there from germany

Great rendition of a 'Leadbelly' classic 👍. Back in '57, when at College, our music teacher was teaching., among other musical genres, "Skiffle" and "Blues" music. For the modern music listener, they have little knowledge of how music & songs are created because much of what is out there now is studio mixed & auto-tuned to remove any imperfections created during recordings. What you are seeing & listening to here is EXACTLY what you would see & hear if you went to a live concert to watch a performance of this song by these artists. In some ways, it would be even better. A terrific collaboration of this song by "Playing For Change" & the artists involved. Loved it!

I LOVE love love this!!! My favorite music, always, is what people make in their own back yard, someone's garage, on the street... To see all these clips of cool people from everywhere doing this totally warms my heart and makes me happy. THIS is real music, what we make, share and groove along to, together--not some insanely over-produced wall of noise that reeks of money and power (for the music industry moguls etc), and doesn't even sound like music, does not move the heart or spirit. I lived in New Orleans for some years and the street musicians were my favorite part of living there.

Hey guys, this is such a beautiful song. By the way, greetings from Slovak Republic. This song is part of my childhood memories, because in times of communist Czechoslovakia, this song, as many other was somehow translated. I grew up in second half of 90´s, in the times, when people still was able to enjoy spending time with theyre´s friends, or neighbours, and hope for new beautiful country was still the thing. Today´s young kids don´t know that. So the reason, why I love Czech version of this song so much is because it brings me back all the great memories, where I see my dad playing gitar in late barbecue evening, and everybody else sing. and there´s dozen of other these "western" style songs, I remember. J
