A look at my various quail varieties, and the myths behind these color differences. Coturnix or "Japanese" quail come in a variety of colors from dark brown or nearly black to different variations of white and everything in between, including silver!

Kansas city quail farms would beg to differ on the size differences. Jumbo meat makers are much bigger than standard. They all might be the same species but they are selective bred for what you want. My jumbo meat makers are double the size of my standard ones and the eggs they lay are nearly twice the size too.

Reality is jumbo is a term given to meat coturnix as they are selective bred to be bigger. Non are called brown that's a seperate quail that's not coturnix called the common brown quail which isn't same bird as coturnix. Standard size wild type coturnix and jumbos are the breed japenese pharaoh both the same colour just ones bred to be a bigger coturnix. Then you have italians and english whites and other colours of the same bird species that can be bred to jumbo size.

I hatched eggs sold as jumbo, and celadon (Blue eggs, from another farm) which hatch as a variety of feather colors and patterns. The "jumbos" are huge in comparison to the others. I assume the jumbos have been selectively bred for larger size, so you are right that they technically aren't different, but I will continue breeding my "jumbos" selectively based on weight. The others I will breed for color pattern and blue egg laying.

A jumbo quail is determined by the age and weight no matter the breed. If it’s 10ozs at 10weeks old then it’s technically considered a jumbo.

I keep them as pets, I just ordered mixed fertile quail eggs. I just wanted them as pets so I didn't care much, I just wanted them to look different so I could tell them apart easily, and I got that. I incubated 12 eggs and 6 hatched (apparently that's normal, you should get 1/2 - 1/3). I gave 2 away and kept 4, so I now have 5 (I was hatching them as companions for one I had as it lost its companion - long story), 3 females and 2 males as it turns out. They were just maturing last autumn and the males got a bit feisty, but settled down over the winter but now it's spring we had to seperate the males and we put one with one female and one with two. We are thinking of incubating some eggs (probably 6 to get 2 or 3) later in the year (when our friend isn't using her incubator and can let us borrow it), around June.

I'm thinking about buying more hens. If you ever get more, do you put the new quail with your groups or do you try and keep them separate? Also, when are you able to tell the gender of your quail based on their feathers? Thanks so much for posting your videos.

+Kayley Schurman Great questions! When I get new birds I introduce them to the rest of the flock at about 5 weeks. The trick is to put then together at night, in the dark. When they wake up next to each other they kind of just assume they were always there. If anyone is being a bulky or if any particular bird is getting bullied then I try putting them with a different group. If they still have issues then I cull that bird. And I can tell the gender pretty well at about 3 weeks. Sometimes it's easy at 2 weeks, but usuallu at about 3. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

@UrbanAviary
@UrbanAviary 7 жыл бұрын
Bobwhites are very good meat birds, and I believe the meat is very similar though I've never tried Bobwhite. The problem with Bobwhites is that the only lay seasonally so their production potential is limited. Also, Bobwhites do not grow to full size as fast as Coturnix do. Bobwhites definitely are bigger and better for meat from a size standpoint but since they don't grow to maturity in 6-8 weeks like a Coturnix, they will always be inferior as a meat production bird. Thanks or watching, hope that helps!

Yeah my jumbos are literally 3 times the size of my standards. Anything over 350 grams is considered jumbo though my largest was 525 grams(average about 440).jumbos are literally bred by picking the largest and continually breeding the largest in each generation. Jumbo browns are those lines bred to be larger as opposed to standard browns which haven't been linebred for size

the only color advantage ive really noticed is white birds are easier to pluck. a poultry farmer explained it like this. the color pigment is like a gel pen ink pushed out the feather folical and it can make them slightly...and i mean slightly harder to remove from the bird then a white or pigmentless feather. not sure if this is "scientific" but i have noticed my english whites are easier to get the wing pin feathers off and though feathers on the side and back that are sometimes more resistant plucking. could be a load of fooey but just my experience.

Great info thank you. I will say if you like Italian - you would love Golden Giants. The male has no spots and soo beautiful to look at. My most calm and placid color type. I have seven male birds living in one large pen atm and they all get along. At one point I thought a couple of the males were not actually mating and being far too gentle with their girls. It seems they do just fine - but even with 1 male to 3 hens - no bald spots or feathers out of place. Could be genetics but the birds come from several different breeders to prevent inbreeding.
