Thanks Terry. Here in Australia I've been developing an "Andalusian" white bird, which was a cross between an Italian male and an English White. The original EW hens were smaller in size (250g) than the Italian roo (327g) but in 4 generations have got that up so the largest birds are 497g (roo) and 513g (hen).

Super mini-dissertation on the basics we need to look for in a quality breeding program! I'm basically wanting to raise Jumbo Browns for meat and egg production, but I must admit to really liking the 'Chocolate' quail you presented, as well as those 'comet' colored (golden) quail. I'm considering making Celadon egg layers as part of my breeding program, as some folks may well be interested in the egg coloration of the celadon lines. Pricer to invest in originally, but could be well worth the effort and cost. Thank you again for taking the time to explain the breeding program you use....it brought back the days of learning about Mendelian Genetics in college science courses. Just something I would like to add from my experience in reptile breeding (very similar to poultry in practice) is that while it's good to go off of the punnett square, life rarely works out to the percentages that the square says. Sometimes you'll hit all of your 25% chance (for better or for worse). Also, an experience from the reptile world, make sure you're getting your stock from reputable breeders and test breed your birds. I've had a number or my reptiles say what their lines were, but when tested against other Het's that should not be there, BOOM the trait showed up. That can throw a big wrench into your breeding program and basically ruin the whole project. So #1 thing, is test breed your birds against other traits that should not be in their line to make sure they're not in your line.

I too have worked with reptiles for almost 20 years and worked closely with Bill & Kathy Love in their cornsnake breeding ventures and have found out that a large percentage of reptile breeders / dealers are crooks and only out to make a buck. Not all, but a large percentage. And briefly working for Glades Herp I saw that often. I've also dealt with some really solid herpers that have what they say. I agree with your Punnett square comment, and yes it is a gamble when trying to use the square but it is a starting point for beginners new to genetics. I also agree with getting your stock from reputable breeders. I only buy hatching eggs only from three breeders and now use those lines to improve on mine. Again, thanks for the comment!

Birds can go awhile with the gene pool I would just bring in some new blood when you can to keep from getting completely inbred

Never cross a son to his mother, grandmother or sisters. You can breed father to daugther but better is grandfather to granddaugther. Breeding first and second cousins is also a good option. When you start tot breed selective, start with 2 lines of breeding stock. First generations hens 1 x FG roos 2 Cross their kids back to grandpa from the paternal line. Cross this generation back to (second) cousins from the maternal line Having 4 or even more lines is even better. Select them all the same and breed between the lines. An good way to start new lines is to breed according to the double vigor factor. Search on internet, it's really worth your time. Unrelated to each other but inbred lines: AxB = hybrid 1 Hybrid 1, these hybrids have the best genetics of both parents, generation 1 often does not have any of the bad genetics of their parents, they are superior to both parent lines= vigor factor. Vigor hybrids grow faster, bigger, oriduce better and have a better feeding conversion. Hybrid 1 x Line C= Hybrid 2, double vigor factor. Double vigor is when your single vigor factor animals are crossed to a new unrelated line. The first vigor hybrids had all good genetics feim their parents remember? The double vigor hybrid has the same, best of both parents. BUT...1 of their parents already had supreme genetics due to the vigor factor, youngsters from this double vigor cross are DOUBLE blessed, they have all the good from 3 lines, they are superior to both parents including the first vigor generation, whom was already superior to the first 2 lines. All commercial livestock is bred to the double vigor principal, starting with 3 (or more, chickens are often double vigor x double vigor) different breeds of animal. For an exampel: Red Angus x black Angus= vigor cross. Vigor cross x Limousine = double vigor beef cow. Superior to all starting breeds. Better feed to meat ratio, grows faster, less health/fysical problems, more milk for calves. When we talk about animals who have multiple youngsters in 1 go, like pigs and rabbits, the double vigor females also have more youngsters and a higher milk production to feed the youngsters.

Watched your homemade incubator video this morning and was just wondering what kind of hatch rates you’re getting as well as if you thought having a light and fan on the top and bottom would be better for more even heating.

I get 80 - 90% hatch rates on my eggs and 60 - 70% on shipped eggs using my DIY incubator. The forced air channel on the back pretty much distributes the heat evenly. I checked the temps at the top and bottom of the incubator and had only a half to one degree difference. My Little Giant isn't that uniform, it has warm and cool spots. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks great info, great channel. I'm learning a lot. Question, I have brown jumbo, and A&M, they're all 5 1/2 weeks old. The brown roosters are crowing as I would expect, but none of the whites. Is it possible I got all 12 hen whites from a small local backyard breeder or do the white a&M's take longer?

Possible, but I would give me a little more time. They should be crowing by 8 - 10 weeks.

Hi Terry, you didn’t mention anything about in-breeding. When starting your breeding program can you breed siblings if that’s all you have?

If you have multiple hens and roosters to start with you probably already have a diverse line. When you say siblings I'm assuming you only have one hen and one rooster which would mean all offspring would have the same mother and father. Otherwise, if you have multiple hens and multiple roosters your hatch would consist of multiple bloodlines. If you are concerned about in-breeding you could hatch out eggs from another source to introduce new blood and genetics.

At what age do you start breeding your quail? How long do you keep them as breeders?

Usually around 8 - 10 weeks they will start breeding and laying fertile eggs. I retire my roosters at 6 months and my hens at 1 year. Hope this helps.

I've got a mixed flock and I noticed that my gray colored quail are more aggressive than my brown colored quail. They are especially aggressive towards the Italian speckleds and often injure them. The hens peck at all the other birds and the roosters are overly aggressive breeders. Should I cull them from the flock or should I just keep them with other gray Birds? I hate to cull them because they're also my biggest. Does anyone know what breed these are? They look like jumbo Browns but they are a bluish silver color
