I remember hearing of a so-called European man who had killed a snow leopard only having grabed some available garage tool. But details matter and I searched until I found the picture of the man, proudly holding up the dead cat no bigger than a common house cat, it was only a baby !! The dog already has the notion that the deadly point is the neck, he definitely knows that he should not let go. But for the dog to be more successful, the feline should have a similar or smaller size. A 150-pound (average weight of a North American male) cougar would only die from a bite to the neck if it had a particularly fragile neck. A 30 kg puma is stronger than the dog, but there is no gap between them. A bite on the neck of a dog that will take a long time to release even after it is dead will be very problematic. Still, I wouldn't favor the dog in a fight. All I want to point out is that the dog's chance is not 0%.

Ironically, the cheetah cannot handle the same large dogs that a lynx can, even though the cheetah is bigger than the lynx. It depends a lot. A German Shepherd will easily kill any ocelot. But it loses to a lynx. A very large kangal would kill even the largest lynx. The cheetah, unless it had a huge size advantage, would stop at the German Shepherd.

Simple questions my friend, the North American wolf is larger than any wolf that exists in the Eastern Hemisphere. There are times where a dog can step to a cougar. Large, angry dog against a juvenile, inexperienced cougar, perhaps. And wild animals don’t get into fights to the death as a matter of course, even animals that would obviously win can get hesitant to fight something that shows no fear (I’ve seen bulls seem to be afraid of geese, for example, although a bull isn’t technically wild). But a bloodlusted, fully grown cougar would absolutely annihilate any dog.

This fear and hesitation of theirs is for two things: 1- to avoid injury. 2- Avoid diseases that stimulate aggression (such as rabies). For reasons like this, if in an area there are several dogs and animals that hunt dogs, but one of the dogs has rabies, he is basically the only one that will not be hunted. It’s just the fact that there’d be a pack or humans nearby so it often deters the cougar causing it to flee or get stalemated but without human intervention it’d easily make short work of any canid.

Secondly, it's the hunting style. Cougar will go straight for the throat, an extremely efficient killing strategy that all cats have. That dogo is a prey, not a predator in this scenario.
