Actually Sweden built its airforce around the notion that it would be fighting a kind of air "Battle of Sweden" against the russians. Having large airbases was useless since these would be destroyed with ease. Therefore the swedish made fighters were made to be able to operate from roads all over the country. Since a large portion of the country is covered in dense forest, it would be possible to hide alot of fighters in these wooded areas. The planes were also designed to require very few maintenance personel.

@@juliusfucik4011 >300 aircraft was still a rather respectable force for the era. Swedish war planning was nothing but realistic though. In case the Cold war turned hot and most of the WP-forces were directed towards the Fulda gap, the Swedish airforce was expected to last about week and a half as a coherent organisation, after that the air flotillas would be so attrited that they were down to individual aircraft missions. A focused effort on Sweden as prelude for a full scale war was the worse case scenario, where the airforce would only last 2-3 days before the surviving aircraft, dispersed and isolated, would revert to improvised individual groups doing essential guerrilla warfare.

Once the Germans see the hovering harriers, they would turn around and report to HQ the alien technology the British now have.
@marmite89592 жыл бұрын
Probably true, jokes aside ze Germans were pretty paranoid about allied technology. When U-Boats started getting detected by British RADAR and promptly sunk they equipped their submarines with an early form of RWR. After the Enigma code was cracked and the allies could decrypt the transmissions from the U-Boats to determine their locations, German intelligence assumed that it was impossible that Enigma could've been broken and there must be something else afoot. They thought the Brits had developed an RWR-detector and so ordered their U-Boats to turn off their RWR sets. Of course all this did was make the German subs more vulnerable to RADAR detection on top of having their radio transmissions intercepted.

Erm... if the Poms lost the BoB how would it be frightening? Take a look at the relative NAVAL strengths in 1940, specifically in the Autumn of 1940 after the BoB. Germany had, ready to sail, 7 destroyers and 3 Cruisers. That was it. That was their entire surface fleet able to sail at the time of Sealion. They had already lost half their available destroyers and a modern cruiser during the Norway Campaign, with other ships damaged. In addition there were further vessels in for routine refits. The Royal Navy on the other hand, had in British waters, so not including Force H in Gib and the Mediterranean Fleet amounted to 6 battleships, 2 Aircraft Carriers, 25 Cruisers and over 100 destroyers. All able to sail. Given that in 1940 the Luftwaffe had few pilots actually trained in anti shipping operations, and they were all in the Condors there is no way Germany could have invaded. The RN wouldn't have even needed to commit major assets, a half dozen Cruisers and a dozen or so Destroyers would be more than capable of keeping the Surface escort busy while Motor torpedo and gun boats tore apart the helpless converted River Barges the Germans were using as 'Landing Craft', which in good conditions could manage MAYBE 3.5 knots....

Well if we are going with histroical accuracy the seawaves and weather WOULD have stopped Sealion, before the Royal Navy decimated it even if the Luftwaffe had air superiority. The Kregismarine had about 12 major combat ships (Destroyers and Bigger. The Invasion of Norway decimated the kreigsmarine, and you WAY overpoulated the ships they had.) operational at that point against the home fleet of over 100, and were trying to cross the channel in riverine, craft, barges, and other non oceanic craft no suitable for the channel. Some issues. Issue 1) Landing Craft. The Landing Craft the Germans had for Sea Lion were converted River Barges, two thirds were unpowered, and those that did have engines could make about 3.5 knots. Hardly ideal when considering the ebbing tide around most of the UK reaches 2 knots (faster in some places), meaning that during an ebbing tide those barges would be making 1.5 knots against the flow. During a Spring tide when the flow rate is faster then they would be effectively stationary during an ebbing tide.... Issue 2) You would not need aircraft. The Royal Navy was more than capable of defending against a Landing. At the end of the Battle Of Britain the Kreigsmarine had 7 Destroyers and 3 Cruisers capable of sailing. They had other surface assets but they were all either undergoing routine refits, or were undergoing repairs, generally for battle damage suffered. In contrast the Royal Navy had on hand, around the UK, so not including Force H in Gibraltar or the Mediterranean Fleet, 6 Battleships, 2 aircraft Carriers, 25 Cruisers and over 100 Destroyers. This is ACTIVE ships and does not include ships in refit or under repair. Given that disparity there is NO WAY Germany could have launched a seaborne invasion of the UK Mainland. Period. The RN would not even need to commit Capital assets. A half dozen Cruisers and a couple of dozen Destroyers could have easily kept the German fleet assets busy while Motor Torpedo and Motor Gun Boats slaughtered the more or less helpless invasion barges. U Boats would not be an answer either, as the likely invasion beaches due to the slow speed of the barges were all within the narrow confines of the Channel, which means EXTREMELY shallow water. The narrow Channel waters are a nightmare even for modern submarines, for WWII boats they were a death trap.

A battle of M270s can place nearly 70,000 bomblets in the target area when firing the M26 rocket, or nearly 56,000 firing either the M26A1 or M26A2 rockets. Each bomblet is a DPICM or Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munition roughly the equivalent of a grenade. Calculate the number of hits needed to sink or fully disable a barge and this would also likely leave the personnel on the barrage either dead or hors de combat. Set the targeting area size to provide the needed density and aim ahead of the advancing group targeted appropriately, then you should sink or effectively destroy a solid majority in that area. Rinse and repeat as needed.
@alganhar12 жыл бұрын
@@richardchurchill5181 The Higgins boats are not a logical stand in. The Barges were far larger and slower, each carrying around a full company compared to the platoon of the Higgins boats. Higgins boats make around 17 knots in good seas, compared to the maybe 3.5 of the barges. Now I will accept that the Higgins boats may be the only possible stand in given the game assets, but because they are the only possible stand in it seriously affects the realism of the scenario as the naval forces are moving far, far faster than they would have had to in reality due to the limitations of the speed of the barges being used as Landing Craft. Higgins boats were purpose designed for opposed amphibious assaults, the barges were converted civilian vessels.... Does not mean much for either if actually hit, but the smaller size and faster speed, plus the relative agility of the Higgins boats would render them somewhat less vulnerable to such a bombardment as they are smaller and faster targets. The larger barges, being slower and cumbersome however..... Well for them its rather like shooting fish in a barrel....
@richardchurchill51812 жыл бұрын
@@alganhar1 What suitable substitutes other than Higgins boats are there in this simulation? There really aren't any. Larger landing vessels were almost exclusive to the allies and Japan and sufficiently more robust to not be comparable to a barge as they were ocean-going vessels. I do not believe Japanese vessels are useable in European waters in this simulation in any case, given what I have been told. You are mistaken about the speed of a Higgins boat. In good conditions they could reach 17 KILOMETERS an hour, which is closer to 9 knots. In anything other than good conditions their performance dropped significantly ... and the English Channel is rarely "good." Square bows and even a relatively light chop are not a good mix. As for simulation purposes, the fact that the barges would be less robust means the same number of hits that would sink a barge would likely to the same for a Higgins boat. Thus, if you can demonstrate that the M270 system is effective against Higgins boats you have good evidence to conclude it would be against the larger barges. As for maneuverability, cluster munitions don't really care if you are maneuvering so long as you are within their area of effect. It is a matter of bomblet density in the area of effect. The task of any landing craft is to reach shore. Maneuvering at sea delays that achievement and keeps the craft at sea where it can be targeted with its load.

The real targets would have been the larger supply ships and supply landing craft not the troop transports. Army's can not fight if they do not have food and ammo.

I'm not military strategist, but I disagree. The troops probably carry enough supplies to land and secure the immediate areas. Once the beaches are cleared more supply ships can move in later.

@@rubiconnn Lol, try no? Royal navy at this time = largest Navy IN THE WORLD. it would not be surpassed by the USN until 1943. Getting those troops ashore would have been a miracle from the German perspective, supplying them afterwards is a flat out impossibility. It literally is NOT happening.
@alganhar12 жыл бұрын
@@phalcon23 Right... and what do they do about bullets, shells, spare parts for their vehicles and that sort of thing hmm? They will be carrying combat loads, the chances of the Germans resupplying them is zero as Germany did not have the Naval strength to even THINK about keeping a supply line across the Channel open for hours, let alone days or weeks. They will have lasted maybe 48 hours before they ran out of fuel, ammunition and spares.

The Royal Navy would have stopped Sea Lion. Indeed, it did. The Wehrmacht realised it had no hope of crossing the English Channel without defeating the RAF and the RN. The RN would have obliterated a Wehrmacht attempt to do so. They may have got some troops ashore, but they would have withered away with no maritime logistics support.
