You forgot to take something into consideration that makes blocking the lightsaber different from dropping the shield into the sun. Heat dissipation. The shield doesn't just absorb the energy, it redirects it it back out. It's why you get a huge explosion when Thor hits it, but Capt is OK under it. That powerful ability to re-emit the energy out is why it's not supposed to be possible to melt the stuff. So the heat energy of the light saber would get radiated back out. The actual end result would depend on how much energy gets dumped how fast into the shield.

@Mr. Whiskers No, the blades can block other blades, so the heat redirected back at it wouldn't melt it
@krisskrosssss
@krisskrosssss 4 жыл бұрын
@@jcklsldr No im pretty sure he's right. Let's say that Thor's hammer Mjolnir had similar effects as the lightsaber when hitting the shield. Both can reach temperatures of the Sun/Sun's core. Since your point is the lightsaber wouldn't be destroyed because it's blade is able to block other lightsabers, same thing can be said for Mjolnir. In the MCU, Mjolnir is made out of Uru, which is stronger that Vibranium, yet when Mjolnir was struck against the shield, the kinetic energy was still redirected. Therefore when a lightsaber strikes the shield at a force similar to the scene where Mjolnir struck against Cap's shield, the kinetic energy would still be redirected. And lightsabers aren't indestructible. Although the blade has never been showed to be broken, the base has. In Star Wars: Rebels, when Obi Wan Kenobi killed Darth Maul, he did so by slicing through the base/handle of the lightsaber, destroying while also fatally wounding Darth Maul. In theory, if the lightsaber were to hit Cap's shield, and the kinetic energy redirected is powerful enough to destroy or disable the base of the lightsaber, then the lightsaber would be destroyed before it could slice through Cap's shield. So basically the fight is decided upon whether the lightsaber can endure enough kinetic energy redirected towards it when striking the shield.

so the power of the gauntlet has weakened the shield, that thanos could smack it with ease... but still... how? did it change the moleculare level of the shield like molecular man or... what? o.O need a proper explaination :D
@peytonmac1131

The infinity gauntlet makes the wielder, for all intents and purposes, an omnipotent god. Thanos could just override the laws of physics that allow Caps shield to work and turn it to dust. Basically, Thanos wanted the shield to break, therefore, it broke. Screw logic or physics.

@Grymmorgan
@Grymmorgan 8 жыл бұрын
Here's the part of the discussion that I think you missed. A lightsaber may well be capable of core temperatures ranging from thousands of degrees centigrade to surface-of-the-sun hot. But such actual heat, without mitigation, would evaporate any Jedi or Sith who attempted to use it. This clearly doesn't happen, so we must deduce that the magnetic field that curves the plasma blade in on itself also insulates the outside world from this heat. Call it something like a heat-exchange conduit, that efficiently pipes the excess heat back into the hilt for recycling as plasma fodder, or that converts it back to power. This being said, merely _holding_ a lightsaber against Cappy's shield would achieve next to nothing. It would take a sustained, Force-enhanced pressure (ala Qui Gon Jinn's assault on the door of the Federation bridge) to warm it at all. Secondly, we also know that the heat application of a lightsaber can be modulated, much like a real-life plasma torch, so that it can cut (high-temperature mode) and also weld (mid-temperature mode), as seen in the outtakes from episode III. For this reason, we can assume that using a lightsaber to cut something very resistant takes either sustained Force application, a parametric modulation of the saber's controls, or both. Finally, the Star Wars universe is filled with objects and materials that are "lightsaber-resistant." These are metals, materials, and fields that can take a standard blow from a lightsaber without damage. The EU has many such items, and we've seen a few in the canonical films and cartoons. It is reasonable to assume that the strongest metal on earth (or close to it) should easily keep parity with such non-terrestrial substances, and so would hold up in a standard battle. The "vibration" dissipating properties of vibranium should easily act as a heat sink to most applications of the saber to Cappy's shield. And Caps would be savvy enough to know that the shield is in danger of damage from a sustained attack - likely some 5-10 minutes before the shield even gets hot, I should think - and to keep "modulating" it by moving it, rotating it, shifting it, or whatever else is necessary to maintain its form and temperature and relieve any sustain against it. Therefore, I think a Steve Rogers/Jedi-Sith combat would be, if not evenly matched, at least not a slam dunk against us Earthlings. And just imagine the shock of a Sith getting a Forceball volleyed back to their face by a non-Force adept!! ;^D

Cap's shield also lets off energy when it absorbs it, like when Thor hits Cap's shield in the first Avengers film, so due to the high temp of the plasma blade, it would be letting off the thermal energy about as fast as it absorbs it, it could even act almost like a heat mirror, sending the heat right back at the wielder of the light saber.
@Deerhunterjs
@Deerhunterjs 4 жыл бұрын
But how well does the shield dissipate heat? That would be the question that needs answering to know if it's possible to melt it with repeated hits since cap probably won't let someone hold a lightsaber against his shield for to long.
@MrSenset
@MrSenset 8 жыл бұрын
So Cap's shield could deflect lightsaber strikes but if the lightsaber was held against the shield for a few seconds then it would start to melt through it. That sounds about right! A fight with both of these weapons would come down to a battle of skill and technique. I really like that idea.

I think you all have to examine the feats we can check. Cap's shield had repeatedly withstood hits from the Human Torch's "Nova Flame" The exact upper temperature isn't known, but in theory it can match an actual nova, which can reach 20 million kelvin, or about 36 million farenheit. The energy-absorbing properties allowed Cap to be unharmed on the other side, for whatever reason, and apparently the shield wasn't even hot to hold. Based on that, I don't think even the highest estimate of a lightsaber's temperature can even come close to this temperature. And since this temperature was ineffective at hurting the shield, I don;t think any lightsaber can cut through it. As for "ligbtsabers can only be blocked by certain materials"-- not true. We see lots of material resist lightsabers in the canon sources, the question is merely how long it takes to overcome it. In TPM, Qui Gon is slowly cutting through a blast door, and he would eventually have succeeded; however, the door still stops him until reinforcements arrive. So, some material will hold off a lightsaber indefinitely. Of course, the more interesting question is the Death Battle. Who would win, Cap or a Jedi? Or better yet, Cap vs Darth Maul?
@Dragonsmith0
@Dragonsmith0 7 жыл бұрын
So the thing about the properties of the shield that make it nigh indestructible is that not only does the vibebranium absorb kinetic (and other forms) of energy but because of it's unique structure it actually quantum tunnnels that energy back into reinforcing the bonds of the overall structure. The more it absorbs the stronger it gets. The only way to break it is at the quantum level as we have seen happen several times.

@Nerdist I think you missed something. At around 2:40 you explain how the shields melting point would actually go down and become a value between steel and vibranium; but in actuality because of vibraniums quality of absorbing heat the amount of energy or heat required would GREATLY increase in turn increasing the melting point. We know that this quality will absorb heat because of what you talked about right after, heat is really just the quality of moving or shaking atoms which is kinetic energy.

Energy absorbing properties can be greatly influenced by shape. (Think coil springs that compress on one axis). This means that kinetic energy could be absorbed by the face of the shield but can still bounce around on its edge.

Except for of course the blinding light that is the lightsaber itself, which is radiating heat in the form of light tho. Also it wouldn't destroy the earth, it may melt a portion of it, but even then not a large one. once the "tokemok" failed the heat would disperse, yada yada.

I'm by no means a chemistry expert, but I have a question when you talk about the shield melting at the temperature it was forged. I think there may be something to this. I realize that this may be a stretch, but a liquid egg can no longer become a liquid once it's cooked due to what I understand is an irreversible thermal reaction. I realize that certain chemicals could potentially return the gelatin of a cooked or boiled egg to a liquid, but that's not the question posed. Could there be something in this third "mysterious substance" that would have a similar chemical effect making the shield impervious to at least the temperature it was forged at?

Absorbing the force of impact and then re-releasing it along the edges of the shield, just like when struck by Thor's hammer. That's why it can only bounce a few times despite being thrown by Captain America's relatively absurd strength, and when struck along the broad sides of the shield it can be easily redirected.

From the OHOTMU entry for Firelord: By the slightest manifestation of his stellar powers, he can burn through any Earthly substance (with the exception of Adamantium). Firelord can reach the temperature of a star, which is very much higher than that of the Torch and so at maximum output he might be able to burn through. Also 2:23 "The extremely stable molecular structure of the Adamantium prevents it from being molded further, even if the temperature remains high enough to keep it in liquefied form. Only a device celled a Molecular Rearranger can alter the form of hardened Adamantium." So it would melt but it wouldn't change shape.

The way I see it with the little easter egg at the end. Captain America's shield absorbs along the flat side, and disperses along the rim, which is why when it hits a wall, it gets a larger ricochet than you'd expect from it, but if you hit flat end it creates a dispersal effect (ala Thor hitting the shield). What doesn't work, perhaps, is when they fire Iron Man's blasts at the shield and it reflects it off - though you could say, perhaps, that a high concentration of force gets reflected, maybe.

The Proto-Adamantium in Cap's shield along with it's unique structure does more than just absorb energy, it redirects any energy that cannot be absorbed. The idea is that the shield's absorbing and repelling abilities will kick in before the metal is effected. In this particular case the framing of the shield is a similar design to a perfectly circular spiderweb. If spiderwebbing wasn't sticky it would act like a trampoline. This is what the structure of the shields does, while the elements of the shield does other things according to their atomic structure. ( i. e. Vibranium )
@justinfinitely
@justinfinitely 7 жыл бұрын
I think that how vibranium absorbd kinetic energy is overlooked. I remember seeing somewhere that when the vibranium absorbs kinetic energy, it uses it to strengthen its intermolecular bonds, and in doing so would make it both tougher and more difficult to melt, so if you think about it, each lightsaber hit would have less and less of an effect. I just found that interesting.

In the (No longer cannon) Star Wars EU, there were a class of weapons called vibroblades. A vibroblade constructed with a cortosis-weave could be used to parry a lightsaber. A cortosis-weave would be something a kin to damascus steel utilizing cortosis ore folded into the blade. Cortosis ore actually shorts out lightsaber blades on contact. The weave simply prevented the lightsaber from cleaving the blade in two at the point of contact. The more cortosis-rich alloy used in a weapon's construction, allowing more weapons to be made effective versus lightsabers. Given that we have do not know the 3rd alloy in Capt's Shield, if it had properties as Cortosis Ore, The Shield would deflect a lightsaber without taking damage. However without any bases to compare the mystery alloy in the shield and cortosis ore, their is know way to know for sure. With that being said, now that Marvel and Star Wars are now both under the Disney umbrella, maybe we will get the opportunity to find out in a crossover comic book! I would love to see the face of the first Jedi or Sith to have their lightsaber bounce off Capt's shield. Just food for thought.

+Billy Batson Plasma in an electromagnetic field. 14k Celsius is much lower than a lightsaber supposedly operates at, otherwise how could it melt the space station door so efficiently in Episode 1? The heat is kept inside by the outer, weakest layer of the EMF produced by the generator (which is why Qui-Gon isn't through the door in nothing flat). So yeah, without that outer layer the moment a lightsaber turned on it would kill everything in the room (or area) just by the amount of heat coming off of it.

It was my understanding that the reason all things made of Vibranium are alloys is because Vibranium itself is liquid at room temperature and the mystery ingredient used in Captain America's shield and other vibranium products is a type of metal cement that "sets" like concrete and grows stronger over time just like concrete. The vibranium contained within this metal concrete absorbs vibrations, while the steel provides structure and the cement holds it all together. Sure a Lightsaber can likely melt through it, especially since we see a lightsaber melting through a blast door which is specifically designed to absorb heavy blaster fire, but we also know that certain crystals shunt lightsaber bemas, so unless we know the third ingredient to Cap's shield, then we can't say for certain. Maybe Cap's Shield uses Cortiss in it's cement. #TeamCap

+Timothy Abakani The blades have rounded tops which appear more like Ultrasaber's designs, however it means it is less durable and more display and toy. If you ever want to look into getting one yourself, I recommend Saberforge, you have more options and all sabers are 'dual-ready' and warrantied longer. Just don't ever join their Kickstarters or Indiegogo campaigns.. they suck at making sure they meet their timelines and communicating back to their backers.

If a lightsaber's blade is so hot, how come a the wielder's hand doesn't melt instantly when they turn it on? You'd think being mere centimeters away from something 10 times as hot as the core of the sun would be hazardous to one's health.

Exactly what Keith said. Every time you see a lightsaber turned on in close proximity to anyone other than a Jedi or Sith people should be either exploding or melting instantly depending on if they're organic or droids.

So really everyone who is close to it should be instantly burned and probably should be blind. But yeah... I mean there is the whole force thing.

Great. Now I can't get this image out of my head, of the Cap's shield splatting against a wall and dropping like a soppy-wet sponge. 😂
@MaJunior00
@MaJunior00 8 жыл бұрын
Worth pointing out that originally, Cap's shield was Vibranium, Adamantium, and an unknown agent. Changing it to the origin of "proto-adamantium" was done later. Also, a lightsaber can't be that hot. That type of heat would combust anything flammable that was nearby... like Jedi robes. The magnetic field you theorize holds the plasma of the blade in place wouldn't (shouldn't?) prevent heat transfer to the air. I know you can calculate heat dispersal to figure out ranges, but that doesn't matter. Three or four feet isn't going to be enough to disperse enough heat.

If a lightsaber is 150,000,000°C, wouldn't it melt/ignite things around it?

I think it's being contained by the magnetic field
@vzangel
@vzangel 8 жыл бұрын
OK, that sounds possible, but then why there's no noticeable interaction of the magnetic field with the environment? And how would the lightsaber could even touch a metallic shield (which has been shown affected by magnetism)? It either would attract it or repel it. If it attracts things then things around it should be attracted, if it repels things then it couldn't touch the shield or great strength would be needed.

+Benjamin Tuesday but you cannot contain the heat generated by the plasma, nor can you contain the em waves such as x rays or gamma rays that would be emtting from the lightsaber plasma. the radiation will kill anyone who is standing in the room with the lightsaber in minutes, if they dont die from the heat first in a matter of seconds.

1:03 A fair analysis/hypothesis, Kyle. HOWEVER, the Knights of the Old Republic games AND short clips from the Star Wars the Clone Wars TV series would have us believe that that plasma coil is actually generated from an energy crystal that supposedly resonates with a jedi's force power/sensitivity, and thus can vary in its heat from wielder to wielder. This in turn means that someone like Anakin/Vader or Luke Skywalker can possibly penetrate Cap's shield given they use enough of their force power behind the swing of the saber. Their force power combined with their physical strength would vary the amount of force applied to the shield quite a bit depending on the wielder so it is very difficult to tell whether or not the saber would actually make the cut. In this sort of a scenario I would have to say that a lightsaber cutting Cap's shield is very VERY situational even with your given hypothesis that the saber would melt the shield if held against it long enough. Knowing how Cap fights and how someone like Luke would fight, Cap would probably be the winner because Luke, while a great lightsaber duelist and with great reflexes, probably would be outclassed by the returning strength of our favorite American super soldier which brings us to the second part of my thought process on this question. It's not a matter of could the lightsaber beat the shield, it's more a matter of could the Captain beat a Master? Or any jedi for that matter? Again, very sitational because no two jedi are of the same fighting style or force power levels. Those are just my ramblings though. :P If anyone wants to correct me on anything I might've missed, please feel free to call me out on it. We all make mistakes.

how do han solo and finn use a lightsabre then?
@thetattooedyoshi
@thetattooedyoshi 8 жыл бұрын
Josh Fitton As Obi-Wan, or "Old Ben" if you prefer, states in the first Star Wars movie and Yoda repeats a little later. The Force flows through all living things. This gives me the theory that Han & Finn can't necessarily fully tap into the Force, but when they need it the most, it's there for them. Hence why Han was able to use it for a couple of minutes in Empire Strikes Back and Finn was able to sort of use it for a few minutes in Force Awakens. Technically everyone can use the force and everyone has some form of base level force power and the crystal in the saber will resonate with that power regardless of the wielder having an aura of Dark Side or Light Side in them. It's just a matter of weather or not The Force will decide if someone is worthy of using the saber. It's kinda like Mjolnir, but almost everyone is worthy.

Maybe the edge of the shield has a higher steel content, allowing it to bounce when thrown but deflect a centre impact... or maybe like Spidey said it just doesn't obey the laws of physics.

So you're saying if we're using real life logic, you think it's far fetched for the vibranium not being able to melt again after turning solid, but someone could hold something 10 times hotter than the suns core and not die? Hmmmm
@Pogol13
@Pogol13 6 жыл бұрын
Clayton Richardson LOL 😂 Exactly. In order to make this explanation work, he essentially changes the stated properties of Cap’s shield, in effect “nerfing” it while simultaneously buffing the observed properties/effects of lightsabers. It’s all make-believe. This attempt at applying real-world physics to objects that basically defies real-world physics is cute and all, but it’s pointless.
@DoctorLazers
@DoctorLazers 5 жыл бұрын
We have to use observable evidence here. From what we can observe, whatever magnetic field that sustains the lightsaber keeps heat from escaping beyond the surface of the 'blade.' We can also say, without a doubt, that Vibranium has a melting point listed in the comics that is well below the amount generated by any plasma arc. Adamantium's melting point is far lower than Vibranium's.

What if we suppose that vibranium has an extremely high latent heat of fusion? It may indeed have a melting point at 1500 C, but it would absorb a tremendous amount of energy before it actually changed phase. So, the light saber could, given enough time, raise the metal to it's melting point, but it might take a really long time.
@appa609
@appa609 7 жыл бұрын
There's many examples of materials that can't melt once they're cast. Two component network polymers for example. I've always thought of adamantium as curing more than freezing. We don't know that vibration and steel behave like classical metals in alloy, so it's possible Proto adamantium doesn't melt at all.

+Jonathan Thompson I remember reading/hearing somewhere that the bouncing of his shield is manipulated through magnets or some other stuff. Meaning, while it should absorb the force and drop after hitting a wall, the magnet should pull it back to him. Also something about how it helps direct it's bouncing around. But honestly, that's just silly. I just say it's magical like Thor's hammer.
@GamesFromSpace
@GamesFromSpace 8 жыл бұрын
He says the shield can't melt in the canon, and then says "but that's not how it works in reality." Yeah, because it's a fictional material. You can't just ignore an official property for being unrealistic. Captain America's shield is nigh indestructible and comes from a universe where magic exists. Light sabers take time to cut through metal doors, and even in the Star Wars universe there are materials impervious to light sabers. The shield wins.

I wouldn't say that magic exists in Captain America's universe. I have never read any comics or anything so I don't have a very good background. But what I have heard is that it isn't magic but just highly advanced. Like Thor's hammer. It isn't magic. It may seem magical to someone who isn't familiar with the technology like fingerprint analysis and a "gravity" enhancing element in the hammer dealing with gravitons and such. At least I hope I was able to regurgitate some of the theories without too much distortion, haha.

Logan Magic definitely exists in the comics universe. Science is more of a thing in the MCU, but they still have outright magical stuff. Plus, even if you don't count super powers as magic, they definitely have physical laws at work which we don't have here. (The weird things the Scarlet Witch could do, for example.) And then there's Doctor Strange, of course, who is literally a sorcerer.
