Could a no-deal Brexit push Wales towards independence?

Boris Johnson may have given himself a new title of Minister for the Union, but how United is the Kingdom? (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
In Wales, where he was today, the Tories are out in front in the latest opinion poll.
But many in the Welsh independence movement see his premiership as the perfect gift for their campaign.
A no-deal Brexit puts new pressures on Scotland and Northern Ireland, could it change the game in Wales too?
Just this weekend thousands gathered to march for independence, so how indy-curious is Wales?

As a person from the Republic of Ireland, independence was hands down a positive development in Ireland. Welsh and Scottish independence is necessary for their people's and Irish unity is necessary for ours. Let's move together as friends, Europeans and partners. 🇮🇪♥️🇪🇺

I’m Irish and I would love to see Welsh independence but I feel there is too much English influence and too many people who are welsh that feel proud to be British, I do believe Wales has been far underdeveloped compare to England and the Westminster government does not invest fairly into wales. I think welsh identity is amazing and far more interesting than the fony British identity. As an Irish person of course I want my island reunited and it’s a far more complex and extreme situation but the values and realism is the same. Please god Scotland will get its independence, Ireland Will gets its true independence and Wales no different may god grant the welsh people their land back.

You couldn't have described the situation in Wales more accurately Darren, I'm Welsh and I'm very proud to be but I'm also very frustrated because of the English influence that has effectively "brainwashed" other (mostly non-Welsh speaking) Welsh people, when I hear other Welsh people talking about "being British" it really makes me feel a mix of disappointment and frustration especially since they are talking about sharing national identity with the people who conquered, raped and exploited us for centuries, I hope that one day soon we and the Scots will break free of this Anglo-centric union and we will have our own independent Celtic countries much like Ireland has already. May Gaelic and Welsh always be spoken by our peoples and may Ireland finally have it's 32 counties once again!

Everyone needs to get a grip. Why do you want to destroy what we have, United Kingdom, Britain. Where all can roam freely. Am not White Brit but am a Brit, and have never gone Scotland before yet, if Scotland goes independent then I cannot visit it like it’s my own country being part of the UK. Let’s face it no matter where you born each of the Island is part of your own country, and one should respect and take pride in that. All parts need each other, makes the United Kingdom. I live in South Wales but I was born in London and moved to South Wales and have most of my family, cousins, relatives in London, Other parts of England. I like it here lot more jobs available, less populated, less crimes (away less than London), people are friendly but you do get the odd weirdos), but opportunities are more, and hence why more people from England moving here, I know many from London moved here, people from western side of England moving here especially from Bristol. Let’s all understand one thing. Together you’re better and bigger. Alone will make you weak only!

As an Englishman I agree, the English want to leave the EU so I think we should let Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland leave the UK and take their problems with them. It also includes of course ending free travel zone, ending the dual passport arrangement, helping those who want to relocate back to there national country, money and imposing hard borders etc.

I live in South Wales, and my experience of Welsh nationalism is that of a contrived counter-culture for middle class hipsters who are desperate for some sense of victim-hood. If you go to an independence rally in Cardiff, you'll find it in no way reflects Cardiff in terms of representation of the working class or of people of colour. We have so many problems in Wales, especially with Brexit and 10 years of brutal austerity, and nationalists can't explain how independence helps any of them. Ironically, when I am approached by YesCymru activists, their arguments are reminiscent of the VoteLeave campaign, offering nothing more than cultural conservatism and unfounded promises about sunlit uplands, and when confronted with facts (like the fact that public spending per capita in Wales is higher than any region in England, despite the fact that our GDP per capita is lower than Gabon's) they storm off angrily. I am aware that the movement is more inclusive/less middle class in the North and West, but the fact remains that we are far more likely to regenerate Wales via a green new deal than via independence.

Interesting to hear about it from a Welsh perspective, in Scotland the majority of those working for independence are working class and there are few delusions about "sunlit uplands" (Andrea Leadsom), we just want to decide our political and socio-cultural future, we want to have entirely Scottish success or failure, on our head be it. The UK took back control from a contrived body of countries so why can't Scotland or Wales (or Ireland) take back control from a contrived body of countries ? A lot of folk in the UK voted to leave the EU for the principle of an over arching and essentially foreign government dictating to them. It is pretty much how a lot of folk in Scotland feel and yes, it is just as vague but just as valid.

The Scottish tax-payer for example is currently being told that 2% of GDP is to be spent on the military as per NATO's order, £200 billion is to be spent on trident with a further £200 billion on new aviation and the F-35 programme - no control over big budgetary concerns and, obviously, foreign policy and still taking crumbs from the table and if Scotland did join the EU as an independent country and it was too restrictive we could hold a referendum and Scexit.

An interesting fact is that Scotland, Wales and Ulster are highly subsidized by the UK government. If these places stayed in the EU or went independent the people would notice a massive drop in living standards. However the problems with Europe is the economy is geared to enrich Germany there is no subsidies for the periphery. The EU is so sclerotic and dictatorial it will eventually collapse.

That massive increase in the UK national debt by the Torys happened at the same time as the Torys austerity cuts against the working poor, disabled, unemployed, children and public services. High street banks disappearing, being replaced with food banks and homelessness on the increase. With the health services struggling and education budget cut per head. The Torys are incompetent.

The little Englanders are saying that Wales is poor and will not survive being independent. But Wales is controlled by Westminster and if Wales is that poor it is due to lack of investment from Westminster for decades. The same Westminster that favours London and the south east of England for investment. So all the more reason to become independent and get decision making for investment etc. In Cardiff. In an independent Wales the Welsh people would be governed by the government that they vote for and not be governed by the government that another country voted for. Most small independent western European countries are richer than England. According to Wikipedia the UK is 22nd in GDP per capita.

No. Wales voted to leave, as did the whole UK. In Scotland, more people voted leave than voted for the SNP at the last election.

The ballot didn't say leave or SNP though so not really comparible. You really have to cherry pick the Scottish brexit vote to come away with that fact.

The SNP only care about independence lbh they moan about Brexit but yet they can't take the fact 55% of us voted to remain in the union in 2014 hypocrisy at it's finest.

I agree, Wales needs to be independent. It needs to be independent from EU rule, like the rest of the UK. Only once Wales and the UK are free from the EU, can we rebuild our country, and make Great Britain, greater.

I’m Australian of welsh descent and no country who ever left English rule has regretted it since. Independence is highly recommended!
