UNION COLLAPSE PODCAST UPDATE: Due to feedback on the episode from viewers, we've decided to take down the podcast on the collapse of the union. We agree with many of our viewers that the episode had some fundamental issues, so we will be sure to discuss the issue in another way in the future. Make sure you subscribe to the podcast to be notified when it goes live.
With chaos reigning in the UK it seems that there's more and more talk of the union collapsing. Generally, though, this conversation is focused around Scottish Independence, but they're not the only ones who could pack their bags. So in this video we take a look at whether the Welsh also want to leave the UK and how this could actually happen.

I have the same sentiment. It's not just the UK leaving the EU its how the Westminster government has gone about it. So many slogans, infighting, petty point scoring over the last 4 years since the Brexit vote to leave and the UK is simply not ready to deal with it. Its humiliating being English seeing how this is being done on the world stage with little chance of change in both competency and general attitude in politics. If I were Scottish I would vote for independence.

I just can't imagine a lot of young Welsh people wanting to completely break off from England because so many of us have family and friends there. Also speaking from experience the job opportunities are extremely limited in Wales for a lot of people and I can't imagine how such a small country would be able to genuinely compete in that aspect.

A Pict walks into a bar. A Celt asks for a seat next to the Pict. A Roman smacks the Celt and tells him to sit over in the corner, then leaves without another word. A Jute, an Angle, and a Saxon walk in, one after the other, and tells everyone to be quiet while the game is on, recounting how great they once were on the pitch. A Dane walks in, embeds his axe into a table, and tells everyone to shape up and does his own thing. A Norman walks in, kills everyone but one inside, then burns the pub to the ground. A Welshman sips his coffee and quips, as the flames lap around him, "This is fine."

@Ginger Of course it's not the VERY same thing. But whatever, I got your point. My only hope is that our European Union does not meet the same end, and that her citizens understand the need of unity and of an even closer union. If Scots do feel sincerely committed, then of course they are welcome. My only fear (which may as well be unfounded) is that an independent Scotland into the EU would interpret again the same reactionary role the UK has covered for decades, keeping it as a cold business contract instead of a living democratic community.

A United Ireland, independent Scotland and Wales are a much greater possibility now than ever befor, why? Brexit and its disastrous effects looming and the fact that Scotland and Wales have shown better leadership, compassion and competence then BoJo and his cronies could have even hoped for. Make no mistake Brexit will go down as the single biggest attributer to the UKs break up with BoJo being elected becoming a close second. There are a LOT of errors and inaccuracies in this video. - Most glaringly @ 5:37. Scotland has a Parliament, not an Assembly; the referendum was in 2014, so how could getting a majority in parliament in 2017 contribute to that?; there was no Scottish Parliamentary election in 2017, and the 2017 general election was for the UK House of Commons. And the voting system is ADDITIONAL Member System, not Alternative Member System. This section is all over the place. - Jeremy Miles is an MS (Member of the Senedd) and Welsh Government minister, not an MP. - Scottish support for independence has DEMONSTRABLY not been at "around 40% since 1998" - and support for Welsh independence is now at levels seen in Scotland just prior to the referendum. - When you say you find it hard to see this surge in nationalism converging into a major political movement, I don't understand. Have you not seen YesCymru? YesCymru is now the largest political movement in Wales, second only to the Labour Party, and the work of YesCymru has PUSHED this surge, not the other way around. - You also need to make a distinction between nationalism and independence - if you believe in organising states around nations, you're a nationalist (Welsh nationalists want a Welsh state, British nationalists want a British state). Nationalism has been interminably strong in Wales throughout modern history, but it has expressed itself in British nationalism, mostly. - It is very difficult to see Plaid Cymru winning a majority, however what you've omitted is the quickly growing support for independence in Welsh Labour - with a poll suggesting 51% of Labour voters in Wales would support independence. - Again, the election in 2021 is to the Welsh Parliament (Senedd Cymru), not the Welsh Assembly (that no longer exists). These are really silly and kind of fundamental mistakes to make - come on. Glad you're paying attention to us, but please do so with accuracy.
@BenGwalchmai
@BenGwalchmai 3 жыл бұрын
hear hear. Though it is good to see that you included a poll where 51% of Welsh Labour voters support independence, the situation is very complex and needs specific terminology. I think I know some A Level Government & Politics students who will be tutting at bits of this video. 😅

I’m a supporter of a uk break up, I’m English and want England to be its own independent country. As it’s Westminster that is the problem and it’s the structure around it. What must happen for England to come out of its current issues is: Scrap the House of Lords and the old British parliament in favour of an English parliament that has PR voting system, an elected second chamber, make campaign donations illegal and make them publicly funded in full, make all English elected officials divest their business interests aswell as their spouses and block all elected officials from becoming lobbyists. As well as English devolution to English regions and have an English constitution to insure if a part of England wants to leave there is a route to self determination and make England a republic. This becomes more evident as time goes on, I’m always seeing English publications like the telegraph asking “should we just abolish welsh language” or how we should be grateful for all England’s done. If we were to get a trade deal with the US, they would have their own T&Cs they would insist on and we would trade sovereignty to get a deal. Even if Plaid took a majority in the Welsh Assembly they likely still wouldn’t get a referendum. The SNP got theirs because it was Cameron’s preferred tactic for nipping emerging threats to his government in the bud. In 2011 the AV referendum allowed him to deny that the 2010 Lib Dem manifesto had any real mandate, and Clegg became a far more tractable junior coalition partner than he would have been otherwise. The 2014 Indy ref was likewise about proving to Salmond that the voters weren’t really buying what he was selling. Cameron tried the same tactic to see off Farage in 2016, but of course it backfired horrifically. I should think his successors will be much more hesitant to follow that lead moving forward.
@tomosprice8136
@tomosprice8136 3 жыл бұрын
But Wales can argue that we've never had a referendum on this, so a Plaid majority could he seen to be a mandate. Boris' main argument against a referendum in Scotland is that they had one 6 years ago, he can't use that argument here. I don't think he would allow a referendum, but there would be fewer arguments against having one in Wales than in Scotland should Plaid win a majority in the Senedd
@aperson22222
@aperson22222 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomosprice8136 It's still up to him whether or not a referendum happens, though. Fewer arguments just means he needs to come right out and say "You're not having one because I don't want to give you one" instead of pretending there's some higher principle at play.

There is one additional factor, that may play a significant role in the level of support for Welsh independence : the actual effects of Brexit, that will begin to take effect in early 2021. If we assume that there would be substantial negative effects from Brexit (supply, travel, economic impacts...), then I think it is reasonable to expect a rise in the popularity of independence. It may be minimal, or it could be a real game-changer...

Love how an Englishmen compares the desire for independence in Scotland versus Wales and fails to mention that the Welsh were conquered whereas the Scots united the kingdoms (even if subsequently may have cooled on that decision). Could TLDR do a video on whether the EU would accept Wales? The way I see it: - Countries like Spain would be in no hurry to offer membership to breakaway regions (this came up in the Scottish ref) - Would the EU want/need another small weak country that would be a net recipient of the EU budget (not being antagonistic to Wales, just stating a fact)? Equally, the UK was a rule maker in the EU, Wales would not be. So a return to the EU would not be a return to normal (as it were).

So my current take is that Wales is not likely to leave the union, but then I would once have said the same about Scotland. Politically, at least for the moment, Wales is behaving like England. It voted for Brexit, and returned a post-war record 14 Tory MPs at the last election. If Plaid Cymru wins next year's devolved election - and I don't think they will - I might have to reconsider. (Just as the SNP's 2007 win was a tipping point for Scottish politics.) But for the moment, it's off the table.

I don't think it's going to happen soon but it's amazing we're even seriously discussing balkanization in the UK. It would have once seemed a pipe dream. Wales voted for Brexit but at a lower rate than England. I've heard it attributed to the large numbers of English retirees who allegedly swung the vote for leave. The story goes that those who are culturally and linguistically Welsh were almost all for remain. How can we know this? Isn't there a secret ballot? Carole Cadwallader alleges that the Valleys, heavily reliant on European funding, voted leave 'cos they'd been bamboozled by algorithms from Putinistas. One person only who voted leave, has expressed regrets to me. He says he was duped into a fear of imaginary immigrants. We do hear more support for independence in the south, and there were marches for independence before the first lockdown. But these are early days. Who knows if it will come to anything?
