It seems that everyone who enters the melee in the middle can evade one missile but then has no energy to evade another, so someone else comes in to finish them off and ends up in the same position. Effectively it's an inescapable black hole to AI. The American speed/range advantage just dictates where the black hole begins but the capabilities are similar after that. It would need entirely different tactics with this sort of battle that the AI can't do, at least not yet.

Cap, one of my biggest gripes is that "for reasons of fairness" ya always set the Russian skill levels at expert when we have clearly seen that they're not as well trained or maintained as their western counter parts. That makes a big difference. So 'for reasons of reality' I'm going to lobby for setting Ruskie skill levels @ something less the settings for western forces. That would be for all platforms, pilots, anti air, ground units, etcetera. To fair that's just the truth.

I'm inclined to disagree somewhat, because i don't think the poor performance in Ukraine is very indicative of how good Russian pilots are, more so their doctrine. However if we talk purely about training, very few countries can match the large amount of hours of yearly flight time US military pilots receive. Combat experience as well! The US loves to get involved in foreign affairs and has been involved in several recent wars. I believe very few countries can match US military pilot's level of training and combat experience.

the AI tactics favoured the Russians with the extra missiles. after the first wave the Americans would retreat and let the second wave do the same. remaining first wave doing a chain saw to re-engage at speed. the Americans gave away their energy advantage and manouver space at the edge of the sam net. good example of fighting the wrong type of fight by the Americans.

Given the AWACS or E2D's long range radar and datalink capabilities, the American pilots could have just as easily kept within the protective umbrella of their SAM's, fired off their long range ordinance, and let the AWACS track the targets. Something that currently PC AI cant replicate is the emotion of combat. In games like the original F.E.A.R it was common for the enemy to withdraw if they took casualties but it was a simple piece of code using percentages. Anybody reading this will understand how much of a difference unit/individual morale can and will make in combat. The current conflict in Ukraine has brought this home to even the general public, numbers, competence and equipment quality mean little if unit morale is low.

I feel like there could be ways to at least simulate AI morale, but it would probably need a few different parameters with a range of values that determine what the AI will prioritize. For example, i imagine that pilot's would be psychologically impacted by the sinking of the Moskva even if they were operating outside the range it could influence. Many pilot's likely had their confidence in their military shaken to some degree and possibly became far more risk averse than they were at the beginning. The impact of a major loss like the Moskva might have made pilots far more cautious about missile strikes, and were probably less willing to fly anywhere beyond firmly controlled territory. If that morale factor was used in this simulation, the Russians would likely be less confident about engaging outside their defense network, so would probably not charge out beyond their s400 range, whereas the first few weeks of the war they may have been recklessly confident and gotten blown out of the sky even worse than the sim. Just a thought

My only real critique on this simulation is that, I don't think either side would wander into the MAR. I think the US would stage their flights at 40 mile waves. They would come in with their tanks on, maximize their speed, fire the first, maybe second wave of missiles, and then go back to the tanker and let the next wave take over.
@brianwright9514
@brianwright9514 2 жыл бұрын
@Shannon Smith I think this highlights exactly why fights like this won't ever happen. Losing this many aircraft/pilots is simply unacceptable and would be a huge strategic cost. The Americans wouldn't go in unless they could mitigate the SAM threat first. And if they had a range advantage with their missiles, they would arrange their order of battle to fully exploit that advantage.

Excellent video and it appears the human factor played a huge role even when they are such a minority of the force. I think this shows why the US has the F-15E and F-15EX jets too, as they are the US missile trucks carrying 10+ long-range missiles. As Cap said, a large-scale air war like this is not likely to happen, especially just heading straight into each other. But, if this ever did happen, the USAF has the numbers to go up against any opponent at a 2-to-1 advantage, whether it's 4th-gen or 5th-gen.

And growlers/f16s with alllll the pods + F35s and their barracuda system. Pods are still crazy effective, keep getting better and when used right let 4th gens accomplish things that previously would have needed a 5th gen/stealth airframe to achieve. And besides the F35s own insane EW capability, it'd probably be far better at shooting down missiles then modeled. It's DAS is fully automated and in tests shown the ability to track/achieve solutions on 120/155mm tank* rounds, and can track ballistic missiles out to nearly 500 miles. Just a matter if it's own weapons have the needed performance.

You always set these fights up for "fairness", but real life ain't fair. Crew training, airframe maintenance, logistics, ground support... the US has MASSIVE advantages in all of those, especially considering that Russia has been fighting a very real war for over half a year now and racking up the corresponding casualties. Most of their front line fighters and ground attack planes are probably not in perfect fighting order
@dgthe3
@dgthe3 2 жыл бұрын
There are dozens of things that won't match real life. The air bases weren't struck with cruise missiles before hand. There likely aren't enough of those R77's to equip every Russian fighter with 10 of them. Even if there were, they won't all be sitting under the wings of the aircraft waiting to go. Then there is the relative difference in pilot training, in group tactics, in AWACS coordination, etc. Or the reliability of the missiles. And on, and on. There are very few things where the Russians would be on even footing with the Americans in such a battle. And if you have even a 10-20% advantage, in 10 different categories ... the result is going to be VERY lopsided. In the end, this is a little bit of entertainment. Although, just once I'd like to see a properly coordinated USN strike against a battlegroup. Lauch the planes, have them loiter around for a while before heading out in a large wave. Stealthy F35s taking the lead to pick off enemy fighters as they take off, a couple dozen F18s in behind launching 100 harpoons at once. And then a 2nd wave to finish things off.

Great fight CAP! Your progress is amazing and such an interesting outcome, here are just a few ideas I thought of while watching, I'm by no means an expert but some thought led to these, they may interest people. I think this shows the Russian numbers doctrine vs the USAs tech doctrine is really interesting in a defensive role for the Russians. A bit like the stealth f35s for attack and murder for mass defense. If the Russians were attacking, then they would have to sacrifice missiles for fuel like the F15s in this vid having 6 AMRAAMs not 8. That would maybe be a delta of min 32 missiles maybe up to 64 for the American's advantage in defense. Then again, a sprinkling of maybe 4 F22s with 24 stealth AMRAAMs would also create a big difference in result. I completely understand how much time and effort these sims take to make but a few different scenarios based on this one just with different aggressors or slight changes in airframe models would be fascinating to watch! I can only hope they are made one day!

I don't think there's much dispute internationally (except in Russia) that US pilots have the overall training advantage. How to model that in DCS? Not too sure.
@QuentinStephens
@QuentinStephens 2 жыл бұрын
The AI was set to expert on both sides. Decrease the AI setting to model a lower level of training. That said, Russian pilots are currently getting a lot of actual air-ground combat experience...
@jamison884
@jamison884 2 жыл бұрын
@@QuentinStephens I'm aware of the settings but this doesn't work because Cap is (rightfully so) going for more realism and not less. "Expert" AI may actually be somewhat representative of Russian pilot skills (not really, but closer to real life than expert is for the US). For example, actual US pilot skills and tactics would be far, far superior to the DCS AI. They certainly wouldn't be charging into the center in huge clumps and having their entire air wing getting within range of about 320 R-77 missiles when each of their own aircraft carries fewer AIM-120Ds. I know it's too much to ask for real tactics and skill because we honestly have no clue as to how good these guys are so it can't be modeled, but it's surely better than what we currently see.

I'd have to disagree with Damp's assessment. The stated objective is air superiority over the battlefield...you can't claim air superiority with a single fighter, especially when it's not even over the contested territory. He's the only survivor, sure...but he didn't really pursue the mission objective, either.

Could you make a series of videos with current and future fighterjets for European countries? For example what if the RNLAF use F35's, Gripens, and AEW aircraft compare to only F35 and it's current view F16's? Or what if the German Airforce has F35, Typhoon and Tornado compared to the current Typhoon and Tornado? So what kind of improvement happened or which technology sucks. Because a lot of EU countries buy a view 5th gen jets or 4 and 4,5 jets. So basicly a small fleet for all tasks. But if you use stealth for air superiority and 4 or 4.5 gen for the "dirty" work how effective would that be compared to some stealth jets. Wich is more cost effective, sole stealth or stealth and 4, 4.5 jets. Great video guys!

No F15C's ARE ALL BEING REPLACED BY F15EX's WHICH FEATURES AN/APG-82, Which Leverages AN/APG-81 as the base likely with couple hundred less T/R Modules, but still gives Pilot the same/similar SA as F35 as it uses same/based off F35's computer... @Shannon SmithI hear what you are saying but that simply ain't the case with what is actually happening in Russia . The Su-35 is meant to be their air superiority fighter same as the Eurofighter . Last I saw they stopped producing Migs (except 35 for naval reasons and selling) their other fighters include the Su-30 as their multirole (with no a-g guided munition so dumb bombing same as the ordinary flanker) and the Su-57 which only 3 have been confirmed made , the project started in 1999 . The Su-75 Checkmate which is export only and not even prototyped yet . The R-77M missile has been prototyped but not gone into production as of 2022 . All of these aircraft mentioned and their old ones none have been standardized at all , most flankers all variants have no RWR fitted to them due to costs , I really believe the Russian airforce is on it's last legs and really is not on par with French , British aero-division let alone the Americans . Even China is not buying any more and India pulled out of the Su-35 altogether .

@@grimreapers Yeah , UK has 160 Eurofighter Typhoons , Russia has a little over 100 Su-35 , actual standardized Su-35s meaning how many are complete RWR installed or actual engines capable of running 100% without having limiters put on them is unknown . Russia makes a lot of things incomplete or partially operational . The British and German AIrforce alone outnumbers the Russians almost 4-1 in terms of fighter jets .

There are a couple of things i noticed in this video- 1) the russians now that americans have better range missiles and radars 2) the russians also know they have longer range SAMs 3) the russians won't be stupid to go and fight americans on fair terms Conclusion - the russian air force is designed to work within or near their SAMs and the defend their territory and bomb the front line they would never meet the americans in an open field like the scenario showcased (I WOULD ADVISE THAT THE RUSSIANS SPWANED DEEEPER IN THEIR SAM NET AS ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS PREVENT GROUNDSTRIKES AGAINST THEIR ASSETS) meanwhile the americans have to attack and thus inherently need to go closer to russian SAMs.

I think this isn't an accurate depiction. For the russian side it may be, sending up their fighters to engage the US fighters. The Americans would have sent in an air wing to engage the Russians and a SEAD strike to take down the SAM sites at the same time, if not a missile strike from their navy. The Americans don't send in just fighters. I would also call it an American victory anyway because the Russian commanders would not have allowed their pilots to cheese it and hang back while their other pilots were fighting and dying. They have this thing about their people seeming to display cowardice in the face of the enemy.

PESA uses a traditional large radio emitter (or emitters) but with the grid of multiple receiver modules. AESAs have a grid of individual send/receive modules, this means the back end systems can multitask much more ably as they have many parallel streams of information - there are disadvantages though - AESA modules are hard to cool in confined fighter environments and field of "vision" is not great without mechanical steering. Which is why the long range advantage universally mooted for AESA isn't true. The modules often overheat in high power search and track modes and go into a cooling strategy such as firing transmissions from the AESA modules at a reduced rate and or in alternate pairs. The good old fashioned emitter(s) in the PESA set can burn away at 10, 20 whatever Kilowatts for hours giving you the maximum performance 100% of the time..

Amateur observation: In addition, this outcome was more or less predictable, given that a longer term strategy would have included refuel, resupply, and logistics back at the base. I'd guess it's a moot point, as the USAF would use stealth at the tip of the spear, and attrit the enemy air defense network early on, or use guided missiles to do the same. In either case, it's still very entertaining to see 4th gen vs 4th gen, and how it was seen as untenable decades ago.

Getting him more situational awareness than he necessarily should have. At the end of the day it all played out well enough.
