Surely those who were prosecuted had legal representation? Why then did none of the lawyers point out that both the PM and the Home Secretary had prejudged the cases and pronounced the accused guilty (Cooper did it in Parliament)? If that didn't prejudice the defendants' right to the presumption of innocence until, and if, proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt then what would? There's even a precedent for this. In the early 2000s the then Home Secretary, Jack Straw, declared that he'd make sure some plane hijackers would spend a long time in prison, he said it even before the hijacking had ended. At their trial the hijackers' lawyers pointed this out to the judge and he had to agree that this made it impossible for them to have a fair trial and he released them. They later sued the government for denying them their day in court and won and received substantial damages!
