In this video:
Alongside sharks, crocodiles and that fish people incorrectly believe can swim up a stream of urine if you pee in the Amazon, piranhas are amongst the most feared aquatic creatures on Earth. This is mostly due to the popularly held idea that a large and hungry enough shoal of piranhas could reduce you to nothing more than a skeleton in a matter of moments- an idea that, as it turns out, isn’t without precedent, but most certainly doesn’t tell the whole story about whether piranhas are actually dangerous to humans. (And, incidentally, if you live in the U.S., you are nearly four times as likely to be killed by a vending machine as a shark, with an average annual death rate of 2.18 for vending machines and 0.6 deaths from shark attacks.)

Ah, but the number of deaths measured by exposures, or time exposed, to sharks and vending machines wasn't determined. I would feel, and likely be, much safer around a vending machine than a shark, especially since I don't try to move the vending machine which is what leads to the desths.

I can't stand those little yappers. Mostly because people don't treat or discipline them like a dog. If by unlucky chance I had one & it acted aggressive, especially to kids, I'd treat it the same as a big dog. I'd probably be more careful putting it on it's side due to size and fragility but it would be there. My wheaten terrier growled once at me over a real meat bone. Once & only once. He didn't get that bone again & never growled at me again. I wouldn't mind having a nice tiny dog though. Already full grown, non aggressive and non yapping. Unless they are warning me for something.

I swam in rivers where piranhas live, when you're in the water they don't come even close normally. And if you throw meat, it's not like they will eat it like mad dogs. Not long ago, people in Brazil used to know the "truth" about this fish, that normally and almost everywhere they are as dangerous as any other fish, so not. But the movies + the easy access to sensationalist online media, created a state of magnified stupidity in many locals, that they now believe in histories of deaths and attacks.(never confirmed).

While it's true that many of the stories about Piranhas are greatly exaggerated they can be extremely dangerous under certain conditions. Jeremy Wade mentions a young boy who was devoured alive by Piranhas in his show 'River Monsters'. And BTW it was Jeremy Wade who performed the stunt of tossing a piece of meat into a pool of Piranhas then sitting in the pool after it was devoured, the fish swimming just inches away from him.

Americans encounter way more vending machines than sharks in their daily lives so those stats do not mean they are less dangerous. It just shows that given the average american daily life there are more chances that an average american will die at the cold claws of a vending machine. That is not true about the Shyness, My Red Belly Piranhas were very alert, Knew and could recognize others, would watch all the goings on in the house. I fed him with raw Chicken and raw Shrimp. I've noticed their aggression is also strongly based on the temperature of the water, before I could clean the tank, I had to shut the tank heater off. I learned the hard way while I was cleaning and he bit me on the back of the arm, it was so clean a bite I didn't even feel it, I just noticed blood in water. Needed 6 stitches. My cat got bit couple years later on the back of his R-Leg, it took 10 stitches. They will attack other fish, I had a large Placostimus for a month in there, One morning I found it stripped to the bone.

Thank you so much for the bonus fact. Although not having anything to do with the topic, it does mention how Armstrong’s daughter died. There are a lot of children still dying of cancer of the brain stem. The treatment has not changed much since her passing. It is still considered rare in the medical community. But if you search for DIPG, there are MANY children who currently have or have recently passed from it. My nephew was one of them.

Piranhas are only really dangerous when they're starving. This happens when falling water levels trap them in isolated pools and ponds, where they are cut off from the river. Attacks on humans happen when the piranhas have already eaten everything else.

I spent a couple weeks in Peru in 2013, one of which was in the lowland jungle in the Iquitos region. We stayed at Pacaya Samiria natural reserve and I swam in waters out of which I also fished red belly piranha. They are tasty and they are bony and they don't bother you when you're swimming with them. I can anecdotally attest to all of those. Great video. Love the channel.

A piranha? Just 1? Even with a couple of Piranhas I highly doubt they could rip a whole finger off in the first couple of bites? Just after the first bite you could easily pull out and you'd be fine.. lol

WeissberV - yup. just over 200 newtons, and your finger is gone. sometimes not a clean severe unless closer to around 300 newtons. piranhas have about 320 newtons of biting force.

Correct, but now I know that Piranhas are timid, prefer to be in schools, will only attack a human as a warning in most cases, are omnivorous, and prefer feeding on smaller fish or dead things. Today I Found Out would be vastly less interesting if they only took a second to say "No," and then went on the talk about their other stuff.

schadenfreudebuddha But that's not the question that draws you in, not many people want to know just 'about piranhas' they want to know if they can turn you into a skeleton or not. It's all about gaining the interest of the viewers. These other extra facts makes these videos worthwhile.

+Quillo Manar: You're hitting the nail right on the head. ;-) We're interested more in the education side of edutainment, but need something to draw the watchers in and keep them interested while we teach all sorts of related things. :-) It's how we make our content somewhat unique and not just like a bagillion other places out there that just give the "No" answer with a filler paragraph or two that says mostly nothing. I'd also personally not be interested in working on the "No" answer style content. It doesn't add anything and is mostly just copying what someone else has done in that case, and because of the shallow research those places often do, that style is also prone to inaccuracy. Obviously our ultra-detailed style is not for everyone, but at least some people seem to enjoy it. :-)

Whelp, I now identify with piranhas. I'm really shy and cautious around humans, will eat anything, it's very difficult to starve me, I will attack if desperate enough, feel nervous when eating with people I'm not good friends with, hide until people go away, and my bite is very strong. (I swear I have no control over how much force I use, I feel like I'm gently hitting a ball then it goes flying half way across the room and hits someone in the face) I also have a resting bitch face and it looks like I will kill you if you disturb me, but inside I'm just a nervous wreck trying to not fail at social activities but doing so anyways.

erm, not even that, they make for a great tourist attraction just like the pre-prepared example in the video and the media in (almost) every culture absolutely loves reinforcing things like that so they are happy to report stories as fact, pass on false reports like the scavenging-as-hunting examples, and pounce on the very few examples of a piranha attack actually happening (usually to livestock). ironically enough this is the first time I've seen something in one of this guy's videos that's readily false: the catfish that buries it'self in an animal's urethra is a real thing, the only part that is a myth is that they swim up the stream when you are peeing, they will seek out urine but you need to actually be inside the water...frankly catfish in general are pretty horrifying if you want to look up some critters that are often actually WORSE than the myths about them. there are also a few species of them that don't seem to stop growing or die of old age now that we are studying them more properly, which makes some of the old stories and drawings of man eating catfish in lakes and rivers in europe from back before we saturated the areas with hunting sound a lot more plausible, the only confirmed one still going on today is man-eating catfish in the ganges (people send bodies down the river as a burial method, fish eat them, some catfish are big enough to do it whole, on VERY rare occasions the fish have grabbed living people by mistake)

Depends on the Piranah species,. as there is quite a large group of species of piranhas,in the serrasalminae family,.Traditionally, Catoprion, Pristobrycon, Pygocentrus, Pygopristis, and Serrasalmus are considered to be true piranhas .The most common one sold in petstores around the world, the pygocentrus nattereri is one of the species that actually hunt their prey in quite large schools,. these fish are normaly youngsters, and pre adults. when they are mature they tend to become more territorial and tends to fare in pairs, than in large groups. during mating season in some cases the males and females tend to group together in larger mating groups, and the males fight amongst eachother to get a mate, after that they disperse out in pairs again, lay theyr eggs and guard theyr eggs and offspring. The redbellied piranha,is a very skittish fish, and is not a fish that would normaly attack humans or any other large prey, it also looses its red belly coloration after it reaches adulthood, and turns more silvery brown and yellow in color. Another close relative to the redbellied piranha, the Pygocentrus Caribe, black spot piranha is another story, the fish looks quite similar to the redbellied piranah , but keeps its colorful red belly, is more silvery on the sides, and darker shaded back than the redbelly piranha, this species is almost always found in large schools, and is usually staying in large groups, before and after egglaying, they are highly terrotorial and the locals fear this fish way more, than the more docile and skittish redbellied piranha. the P caribe is described more often to bite swimmers, and therefore locals dont swim in waters where this species are found. P caribe,is rarely found in the petrade worldwide, due to its agrressive behaviour. There is also other Piranha species that are considered more dangerous than the redbellies, due to size and wounds it would inflict if it bites you, the black piranha. this species is not found in schools, and is a rouge species, that only travels in pairs during mating. The other Piranha species, are rarely sold in the petrade as these fish is not social fish or a fish, most would be recomended to have in a fishtank, due to extreme high aggresion, size, price or specialiation on feeding. one exeption is in the catoprion genus, these are scale and fin eaters, are quite small in size. Red bellied Pacus, wich is mostly herbivores in diet( omnivore)(fruitpiranhas), but tends to grow into quite the size, but is mostly a friendly giant if keept right and have enough diverse food, and space. Silverdollars belong also in this family, and these contains also mostly smaller, herbivore/omnivore species, but some can grow in size and eat smaller fish if given the chance. In the Pygocentrus genus :There are currently four recognized species : Pygocentrus cariba (black spot piranha)Pygocentrus nattereri (red piranha, red-bellied piranha)Pygocentrus palometa Pygocentrus piraya,(the Black Piranha /San Francisco piranha).

I do understand the myth, piranhas are curious. I've kept them im sufficiently large numbers and tank. Though as a holding for a friend I noticed they often explored my cautiously dangling cleaning equipment with their mouths. The school often munched all that I threw in, only to reject food for a week after. Oppportunistic, they loved still meats. More often than not I found I overfed them and had to wait days before they'd eat again. They did not frenzy, they inspected foor before making it dissappear in seconds and then refused a next meal. It actually took experimentation and calculation to figure out a good feeding pattern. I kept them in a good planted tank, when they were ready to eat again I'd often see slight damage to plants first. Their appetite was either overly present or absent. Worms were always appreciated, but again they only ate still food when large quantities were offered.
