I mean there's fair evidence to say Jesus probably existed, or at least someone existed that inspired the mythos.... But as the gospels were written wayyyyyy after he allegedly died (and we don't have any gospel manuscripts from anywhere near when they were likely first written) anything in them is doubtful.

I don't believe in Jesus as God but researching his historicity has become one of my hobbies because the history of that time and place was incredibly interesting. Learning things like the actual meaning of the title Chrestus, how many people bore it and the potential of a Jesus having been a Mandaean apostate gives a whole new perspective on our history. In the big picture, it doesn't matter if there was a Jesus, many "Jesuses" or none but why Christianity came to be and took over Western culture for so long. Humans are a mess. That's all I can say. Great video. Definitely worth a half hour of my time.

American Christians particularly baffle me. They believe Jesus is and was real, the Bible is the word of God after all. But if you sit down and talk about the basics of him like how he was a middle eastern Jewish man that hated the corrupt merchant class and spent all his time with the homeless and lepers. He wasn't massively popular in and most of the people that did know him, did not like what he stood for. Then just ask them if they're conservative (of which a majority will say yes) and ask if that's what Jesus would do. Again they'll probably say "yes" and it's sad I'm atheist and have a deeper understanding of their own religion. 🤷

Its not tho. To the extent that there is evidence it suggests that Jesus was a real person with a real ministry. Its not academically justified to completely deny that there was an apocalyptic preacher called Yeshua (or whatever)who was from Nazareth who was crucified by the Romans. Doesnt mean he was god, it just mean that the myth is based on a real person. There is considerably MORE evidence for man made climate change but categorically they are both academically justified and denial of either of them amounts to a kind of zealousness rooted in personal bias and in contradiction to the evidence.

@@TodayIFoundOut The big problem that a lot of folks ignore through, when presenting the OP's agrument, which was touched on briefly here at the beginning, is that almost everything we read about Jesus is describing and arguing for the existence of a supernatural being that performed supernatural feats, not a regular guy doing amazing but mundane things. Historians in general will regard past figures with similar attributes as Jesus as being fictional or mythological; but somehow Jesus gets a pass here. Most past figures that are considered historical for whom we don't have a lot of evidence for are considered historical BECAUSE their descriptions are mundane not supernatural (with the occasional embellishment). To close on the argument that to deny Jesus' historicity is akin to denying climate change is patently fallacious. We have loads of evidence and data backing up climate change, not to mention the fundamentals of physical chemistry wrt to CO2. We have virtually no evidence of Jesus' existence except highly fictionalized writings from which some historians painfully try to tease out a real person. The historian who made that statement is truly trying to cover for some serious short comings.

@@brianfox771 - I would disagree with the notion that only Jesus of Nazareth gets a pass; most historians of religion that I am aware of regard Siddhartha Gautama as an historical figure as a matter of course (very few, that I have found, go on a "quest" for the "historical Siddhartha"). One could make the same argument regarding Mohammad, for instance. The exception I have noted is the three Patriarch and Moses, where most will consider the Patriarchs to be highly legendary figures at best (with a great number concluding Isaac never existed at all) and several doubting the existence of a specific Moses (with some suggesting Moses is an amalgamation of figures who were among the exodus group and who's actual identities are now lost to time). So I would disagree that Jesus receives a pass prima facia, particularly considering we have 200 years of serious academic study of Jesus as an historical figure, with interpretations of Jesus' historicity moving as different historical methods gain prominence. It's hard to say that Jesus just "gets a pass". While Prof. Meyers' statement may be hyperbolic, I don't think that hyperbole in itself makes it inaccurate.

@Benja Lucian but almost all religions we've got actual data on started with a charismatic leader, I can't even think of one where a group of people decided to create one around someone else. We've got proof that people in ancient times would embellish historical figures with made up stories, like Alexander the Great being the son of Zeus, or do you also believe Alexander didn't exist? We also got proof that cults form around charismatic leaders and the followers start to believe in his divinity, even in the 21th century this stuff happens. So if we go by the scientific method, the most likely hypothesis that science supports would the existence of Jesus as a cult leader that had stories made up about him by his followers later down the line to make him seem greater, all historical evidence regarding religions supports this hypothesis. So are you a man of science or faith? Because right now you're the one that believes he didn't exist.

I’m very surprised by the claim “historians” have a consensus that Jesus existed. I’d like to see some kind of survey rather than just take one historian’s opinion. Jesus’ existence is highly problematic. I study the Viking Age, in which we have several figures that are legendary, semi-legendary, and historical. What separates them isn’t just the volume and veracity of the sources that mentioned them, it’s the cross-referencing of sources that overlap. The more they’re cross-referenced, the more likely they existed. For example, Ragnar Lothbrok is considered semi-legendary because while his deeds are well attested in the sagas, the sagas are not a reliable source (they were written centuries later, not unlike the New Testament for Jesus). Other disparate sources [may] mention him, but those, too, are contested, much like the sources evoked in this video for Jesus. So here’s where I find it odd that there’s a supposed consensus that Jesus existed, because no historian worth his salt would claim that Ragnar Lothbrok was a real person. One or several people may have inspired the tales of his deeds, but he’s understood to be legendary, more like Robin Hood or Arthur. Further, modern studies of religions and mythologies have found a suspicious alignment between Jesus’ story and the standard hero’s journey, so much so that the psychologist C.G. Jung even claimed that there is no better example of individuation in world mythologies than the story of Jesus. It’s obvious the story follows a formula taken from earlier mythologies. As mentioned in the video, Jesus was indeed a common name at the time, and someone may have even inspired the story, or multiple people, but is it prudent to say THE Jesus existed without a doubt? I think not. Dos it diminish the value of Jesus’ story? No, because the point isn’t if he existed or not, it’s the lessons we can learn about ourselves and how to live that matter.

Jungs claims 1900 years later are irrelevant to the point. And you will get laughed out of any room of NT Scholars if you wanna claim that Jesus was some mythological figure. I am an Atheist. When I was in school, I did a double major in Classical Studies and Religious Studies, so am well educated in both the time period as well as the topic. Did Jesus exist? There's a very high likelihood that he did. My favourite argument against the Mythicist position was put forth by Christopher Hitchens, that the New Testament writers went to such extreme lengths to have Jesus of Nazareth be born in Bethlehem, to fulfill prophecies, that if you were creating a fictional character from whole cloth, it would have just been easier to create Jesus of Bethlehem. That said, your comparison with Socrates as a way of suggesting that we have as good an idea of what Jesus said as what Socrates said is erroneous. None of the writers of any book in the NT actually met or knew Jesus. Paul is the earliest writer, and apparently met Peter and James. So he is at the "friend of a friend" level, 30 years after Jesus' death. Plato was Socrates' student. He not only met Socrates, he knew him very well and studied at his feet, so to speak. There is a clear distinction in level of familiarity and access between the two situations.

*that the New Testament writers went to such extreme lengths to have Jesus of Nazareth be born in Bethlehem, to fulfill prophecies, that if you were creating a fictional character from whole cloth, it would have just been easier to create Jesus of Bethlehem* This is a good argument except for 2 things. Of the 4 gospels, only two of them say Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The other two gospels don't consider where Jesus was born to be important enough to write about it, meaning you didn't need to fulfill all the prophecies to be written of as a messiah figure.

The problem is that a lot of people think there are only 2 ways to look at the Bible, it’s all true or it’s all false. When it comes to the Jesus of history, the Biblical sources should be treated like any other ancient source. Paul thought he was writing a letter when he wrote Galatians, not a text of which every jot and tittle is God’s holy unchangeable word. So in addition to the whole dance making him from Bethlehem, you need to explain why in Galatians Paul writes about meeting a chief follower of Jesus (Peter) and his brother (James) and say he doesn’t agree with them. You also need to deal with the Crucifixion, which made the earliest Christians very uncomfortable. Why not make up a guy who wasn’t crucified? As to miracles, well I see guys on TV performing “miracles” every day. So if there are folks believing in miracle workers today, 2000 years ago is a snap. So the academic consensus is yes there was a real guy. He had a reputation as a miracle worker (so does Peter Popoff) he pissed off the powers that be in the Temple cleansing and they executed him.

@@philsphan4414 *The problem is that a lot of people think there are only 2 ways to look at the Bible, it’s all true or it’s all false* Makes sense though. Because if you can admit and doubt one part of the bible as allegory or metaphor, where do you stop? The whole bible could be that. *When it comes to the Jesus of history, the Biblical sources should be treated like any other ancient source* HIstorians do. And dismiss them as sources. They're not contemporary, they're anonymous, none of them say they're writing eyewitness accounts, or even histories or biographies. They say they're writing theology. *Paul thought he was writing a letter when he wrote Galatians, not a text of which every jot and tittle is God’s holy unchangeable word* Exactly. He wasn't writing dogma or scripture. *you need to explain why in Galatians Paul writes about meeting a chief follower of Jesus (Peter) and his brother (James) and say he doesn’t agree with them* Exactly. If they were the apostles of Jesus, _handpicked by the son of god himself_ why wouldn't Paul just fall at their feet and devote himself to spreading their teachings? Instead, he dismisses their teachings, calls t hem nobodies and that he's not going to let them affect his teachings. IOW, he treats them as no different than himself -- a street preacher. *You also need to deal with the Crucifixion, which made the earliest Christians very uncomfortable. Why not make up a guy who wasn’t crucified* If they were embarrassed about it, they had plenty of time to change the story. But they didn't, so this did not embarrass them, obviously, especially when they could tie it into writings about how _that was supposed to happen_ *So the academic consensus is yes there was a real guy* So there is no academic consensus. They're divided among those who think he existed, but didn't do anything the bible says he did, which then moots the point of his existence and those who say he's mythical.

I think the important point here is not whether he existed, but whether the stories about him are true. As you said, the name was fairly common, and given the political situation the existence of a rebellious preacher is not an extraordinary claim. But if he couldn't heal the sick with a touch and a prayer, multiply a picnic basket to feed a mob, and recover from being tortured to death, then the biblical character is still a fiction. Those are the claims that demand more rigorous examination.

Actually, Jesus's historicity is a main point. That's the reason of this video, to start with. Most critiques of Christianity start with the understanding that everything miraculous the gospels say is ""obviously"" fictitious, therefore the guy didn't exist. Your position goes right by that alley. How could we possibly prove that anything supernatural the gospels say actually happened? We can't, therefore the guy didn't exist. But, proving the historicity of the guy poses the most interesting questions. Why his contemporaries, people who met and followed him, were willing to tell everyone that the guy did these and those things - to the point of getting executed because they didn't stop telling those things? (Yep, most apostles and many disciples were killed for their activities). And that's the good question. We cannot travel in time to witness what Jesus actually did, but we can read the historical accounts of Christianity's development to know what people who knew him believed. Ever heard of Patristics?
@Drakemiser
@Drakemiser Жыл бұрын
You can answer this question with secular scholarship. There are a few writings about Jesus-Josephus being one-that say Jesus did do miracles by demon magic, or some sort of black magic. Paul can be counted as a skeptic as well, seeing as he was first a Romanized Jew who killed Christians. Basically, you take writings from people who were not fans of the person you are trying to learn about to learn the truth. Some wrote about miracles. Some wrote about a resurrection. The point is the claims the Bible makes are made much more probable by its enemies. No other person in history has been written about like Jesus was.

There have been plenty of historical figures willing to martyr themselves for a cause, whether it be a righteous rebellion or a personal psychosis. The fact that this one particular cult lingered long enough to become powerful doesn't make one martyr special. Historians can accept the existence of a man as true based on records of the time because that's not unusual, a rebellious preacher being murder for his beliefs is a thing that has happened many times, and in no way violates our understanding of the universe. Magic spells are something entirely different, they make the story fictional - unless you want to claim the story is true, in which case you need to prove the magic is at least possible.

I’m kindof mind blown that the historical fact of Jesus’s existence isn’t more well-known. Until watching this video I had assumed that there was scant evidence outside of the Bible that Jesus existed (which makes it much easier to just assume the whole Bible is a made up story that you either believe in or don’t). I’m sitting here in shock that none of my teachers in school or anyone else ever deigned to mention this (likely because they, too, were unaware). Thanks for making this!

Well the fact is that the evidence outside the bible for Jesus’s existence is quite scant, it’s just you don’t require much evidence to support the claim “a man lived” as this is a very mundane claim.

I don't know that would be particularly interesting. Most other religious leaders were just people, while Jesus was supposed to be a magical god. And of course even if you had excellent evidence of particular religious figures, and that the stories referred to a particular person, you'd then need to find evidence of the actual miracles that they performed, which is unlikely if you're even questioning their existence. Especially since we have copious evidence of living people today capable of doing all kinds of religious miracles in front of thousands or millions of people who nevertheless are seen as fraudsters.

Although I am now an Atheist, I was once a devout Christian and earned a master's degree in Christian Apologetics from a Baptist Seminary where I studied this topic extensively from both sides. I say all that to preface that this is EXTREMELY well researched and representative of the academic consensus on the existence of Jesus. Although I no longer believe in Christianity, I find it utterly appalling that I have to defend the existence of the historical figure of Jesus to other atheists who oppose it like it's some sort of evidence for the faith. The existence of Jesus does just as much to prove Christianity as the existence of Muhammad proves Islam or the existence of Barbara Streisand proves Judaism. Thank you for presenting a fair video on the topic that represents the historical data and academic consensus over the contemporary dribble of ignorant, reactionary atheists scared of the existence of a man who has been dead for two millenia.

@@flipflopski2951 that's a long question to answer, but in short there are a few areas that really have historical relevance although not necessarily in the way Christians would hope for. I'm throwing this together off the top of my head so I may forget something to add in here. To give a quick(ish) answer, the four gospels can give us some basic information about Jesus that are accepted pretty much across the board by scholars: he was a first century Palestinian Jew who had disciples, he was killed by the Romans by crucifixion, etc. Its not necessarily that these were written by the people they are attributed to or close enough to the time of Jesus, but they seem to have common source materials that are lost to us today (referred to as "Q") that are much earlier. We find some historically relevant information in the Acts of the Apostles, but much of the text is drawn into question not only for its miraculous nature, but also for the fact it often differs with the letters Paul wrote on the same events it describes. As for Paul, he was a historical figure and did write a good chunk of the letters the Bible attributes to him. From those we can get early insight about early Christian beliefs (at least Paul's version), some historical framework of his time and life, and some of the challenges facing the Chriatian religion in its early years. That's a very basic survey if it. There are some great resources to dig deeper into these topics from some of the sources mentioned in this video. Dr. Bart Ehrman (who is a former Christian, now agnostic himself) has written a lot on both academic and more popular levels on some of these topics, and I would highly recommend his books to anyone wanting an accessible introduction to the historical Jesus and New Testament studies from a leading scholar.
@gulfcoasttreasurehunter9112
@gulfcoasttreasurehunter9112 Жыл бұрын
@@flipflopski2951 and one other note, my answer assumed you meant historically representative of the events surrounding the life of Jesus and other events the Bible claims to portray. Technically all of the the texts give us "historical" information as they give us insights into the beliefs of Christian authors (some of whom wrote much later) about their beliefs, myths, and traditions. Many of these may not historical in the sense of being events that actually happened in history, but all of them are relevant for study. Take for example the writer of the Apocalypse of John. It may not have much value to studying the history of any events it discusses as it is heavily encoded with symbolism and apocalyptic language, but it can be studied as a historical example of reasonably early Christian apocalyptic literature. So, all of it has something to discover, just not often something to discover about the actual, historical person of Jesus.

The "criterion of embarrassment" is completely nonsensical. There are several problems trying to use such a concept as an argument in this context. For starters, the vast majority of hero myths in antiquity did not shy away from attributing flaws and defeat to the heroes in question. This very much applied to the stories of the scriptures, which the author(s) of the Gospels knew very well: Pious prophets and servants of God suffering at the hands of the enemies of God, martyring themselves. Your archetypal martyr story, which shows how wicked and evil the enemy is, and how the hero of the story suffers at their hands, even becoming a martyr. In the context of Jesus in particular, a martyr story, rather than a "conquering hero" story, would have made significantly more sense: For starters, the Romans were still in power, so everybody knew that there couldn't possibly have been some kind of Messiah who defeated the oppressors and liberated his people. Everybody could see it in their own very lives: The oppressors, the Romans, were still there, very much in power. Nobody had defeated them. Who would have believed a story of a Messiah who came and was victorious against them? Everybody could see with their own eyes that wasn't the case. A story of a Messiah who came and was martyred by the oppressors, somewhere in some city far away, like a century ago, is much more believable. There was very little reason for people not to believe it, when they were told the story with enough conviction. The writer(s) of the Gospels knew this perfectly well, and likewise knew perfectly well of the prophecies of the scriptures about a suffering Messiah who is martyred at the hands of the enemy. On top of that, what better story to tell when you want to rally people to raise up against the oppressors, the Romans? "Our Messiah came to save us, he was a great teacher, and the perfect Son of God, and he suffered and was martyred at the hands of our enemies, who ignominiously killed him, a completely innocent person who had done nothing wrong." This kind of story does not elicit embarrassment in the audience: It elicits empathy and anger. The entire concept of "criterion of embarrassment" is completely asinine and doesn't make any sense, especially in this particular context.

And if different teachings about Jesus were circulating before the gospels were written, and they were, Paul points this out in his letters, people had a chance and the time to write out anything they found embarrassing. So what ended up in the gospels they didn't find embarrassing.

Interesting take. Considering this a valid point, it would tie in with Christ defeating death. This not only would make him one who conquers, as foretold, but it would also hand his followers a very desirable victory: surviving death. And indeed, the criterion of embarrassment is a weak one: nobody would claim this because it is embarrassing; therefore, it must be true. It is exactly the conclusion they want you to reach.

I don't seriously doubt that the historical Jesus of Nazareth, also known as the Christ, did exist, but I do seriously question the accounts of his life. Of the four canonical Gospels, there are many contradictions and inconsistencies in the narratives (not to mention with the non-canonical gospels), and we can even see examples and evidence of editing that happened over time. We also know that these gospels were written long after Jesus' death (believed to be sometime after 70 CE for Mark and sometime after 90 CE for John, though the oldest fragments are from much later points). We also suspect that at least half of the Pauline epistles in the Bible are likely forgeries. The veracity of claims about who Jesus was, when he lived, and what he said that we now have recorded is questionable. Moreover, we can look to cults for information about human behaviour in relation to charismatic leaders. We can see how cult leaders can grow to messianic proportions in their own lifetime, let alone after their death. It's not hard to see how this could happen in the case of Jesus. So while I do not have serious doubts that Jesus of Nazareth did exist, I have very serious doubts as to the veracity of any claims that have been made about him.

@rogerward801 "conscience", directly translated, means "with knowledge" ... "Knowledge" that comes from where? Written upon the hearts of mankind by Whom? OF COURSE, people CAN have a good life outside of religion. In fact, Romans 2: 14 -16 is an excellent place to begin building your own answer to that question to stump Christians. You can add Scripture, pulled out of context, of course, to your arguments against "religion". However, ALL men are religious, as in, have a spiritual essence separate from the body (soul, if you like) that searches for a source of love. On another point; SOME "religions" are actually quite horrendous for both the practioner as well as those who must interact with the practices. Take, for example, the people in London who lived at peace with their neighbors for centuries and now have to be fearful of being knifed and rah aped by a VERY religious subculture that has taken over London. SAME issue in Norway and Sweden and now NYC, which is up 11% for rah ape since 2021. Read Colossians Chapter One so you realize, at least from my perspective, WHOSE face you are spitting in daily. Even saying the name of God out loud is a big no-no for them. Blasphemy was punished by public stoning. It wouldn't have been "Jesus" but something closer to "Joshua" before the Greeks and Romans stepped in.

I’m starting to think that maybe Jesus was such a common name, that Jesus was not a person, but a group of people, or an “idea” of a type of person. Just an idea. It makes sense that it was a bunch of “Jesuses” that spread the ideology so far and wide, and followers saying that they had seen him after his crucifixion. Of course you saw “Jesus”… just not the “Jesus” that was crucified last week 😬

That's probably a big part of why they're myths, they're older. It takes a long time for a religion to branch and evolve into something new, or die off. Christianity is very young, and even "modern" Judaism is one of the later ones, give it 10,000 years, and people will take about Jesus the same way they talk about Marduk or Ra.

Ive been atheist most my life. Recently Ive found some solace in faith, but I believe the faith Ive found and the religion that often follows it is going to be full of individuals I do not have faith in. Theyre of questionable ethics and If I want to continue down this route, Ill have to work to either change them or Id have to wait for divine judgement. Not sure if Im willling to wait for that.

@@anwaraisling My previous judgement, based on articles I read 15-ish years ago, was that Jesus was either not a historical figure or that there was no evidence that anyone believed him to be the messiah during his lifetime. Articles I read at the time suggested that the first written evidence of Christianity occurred about a century later. Simon’s video seemed to blow that out of the water.

@@XDex91 Check this out.... The Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel ('God with us') For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. These verses are from the book of Isaiah the prophet and were written 700 years before Jesus was born. Who is he talking about? Keep looking Dex. There's a treasure waiting for you at the end. Of course you won't be able to prove that, what would be the POINT of his assuming the second persona, if he ever let any evidence be discovered of the first?. "Whether a person named Clark Kent ever existed is rather mundane unless you can demonstrate he was bullet proof and could fly." Yes, it is mundane and it separate. You can't say "it is impossible for men to be bullet proof and fly.....and therefore there was no such man." The second doesn't follow from the first logically. That some think Jesus was God Incarnate has no bearing on whether he existed as a man.

Don’t you think the enemies trick (if you choose to believe in spiritual) would be wiser than you & I. That you’re dealing with an ancient evil.. And that enemy would use man. It would use man to create these plots of movies, & characters, & comic book super heroes.. Just to make it easier for you to dismiss an actual historical figure. It is so easy for the enemy now. Because we submit our mind & our time to it. Filling our minds with garbage.. What other story.. even if the character is “made up” can you say is greater than Jesus. The Son of God. What other character Ever, made by mankind. Has ever even come close to the great things He has done. And, be a sinless human being.. even if you think he is made up.
