Ukraine signed a decree to take back Crimea (and Donbas but technically that is still Ukraine) I doubt that would have happened without America’s encouragement or at least backing. Russia has responded as technically Crimea is Russia now. So in their eyes Ukraine has signed a decree to invade Russia and restricted water to Crimea. Whoever backs down loses face so there has to be a few punches thrown.

@davidpnewton
@davidpnewton 3 жыл бұрын
@@edc1569 of course we won't. Putin is a murderer. He needs to be treated as such. The reason Ukraine doesn't want to be in the Russian sphere of influence is that the Russian government is a malign influence and is guilty of crimes against humanity. It has waged illegal, expansionistic wars against many of its neighbours. Georgia and Ukraine are the primary victims of those. It has killed thousands of people during those wars. It has engaged in state-sponsored murder on British territory. It's not as bad as China in that the current regime hasn't engaged in genocide, but make no mistake it is a malign influence in the world. There is a silver lining to this however: its population is already shrinking and the pressures which have resulted in that shrinking show no signs of reversing. So there will simply be fewer Russians around for Putin and whoever succeeds him to use in their schemes in the future. The Russian economy will be weaker and we can say good riddance to Russia as a significant power.

Excellent informative analysis, Russia will never let Ukraine leave its sphere if influence - especially not with so many Russians living there. Ukraine may end up splitting, as there is very distinct east/west divide, wherein which people in the west are very pro west (ie EU and NATO) but people in the east very much have an affinity with Russia because they essentially are Russians. Be interesting to see how this plays out.

Exceptional interview by Steven Edginton. Mark Galeotti at his best. Edginton's technique is a breath of fresh air for journalism today. He set his ego aside...and asked short clear sober questions. Then, he let Galeotti - the person being interviewed - respond. That approach got the best from Galeotti. From San Diego, California - ya, I'll be following your work Steven Edginton. As a Russian specialist, I can tell you that was as good as it gets. Galeotti pretty much nailed it all the way through. I see Putin a bit differently in that - yes - Putin was a mid-grade talent on the road to the Kremlin. However, after a baptism of fire in the cauldron of Russian power politics during his first couple years as President, Putin was transformed by the experience and actually flowered as a talent when he took to heart the greater role of 'President of Russia'. While geopolitically sharp as ever, my sense is Putin has become surrounded by a small circle of like-minded security services people of his own generation. Indeed, Vladimir Putin's greatest challenge as President lies in front of him: presidential succession and an orderly peaceful transfer of power. After successfully rebalancing & securing Russia's global hydrocarbons trade, the Kremlin's domestic economic & social development strategies now lack imagination. While the common view is that Russia's economy is a natural resources story, in fact the service sector employs about 2/3 of an increasingly urbanized, technologically literate population. Less austerity and more rule-of-law is what Russians need to build the normal, civilized lives they want for themselves & their children. Otherwise, Russia will drift further into the dangerous waters of our times.

Not even a comment about how Biden came into office and is enthusiastically attacking Russia, China, Iran, N Korea etc. Biden even threatens Germany with many sanctions if Merkel accepts the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. NATO has no intention of invading any part of Russia, never did and its forces are only there because Russia is obviously the aggressor. The former Soviet block Countries that sort independence, joined the EU and apply for NATO membership did so by their own volition and democratically, they weren't invaded by the EU and NATO ... something Putin can't stomach as he longs for the return of the Stalin era Soviet Union. He just passed a law to allow him to be President until 2036 ... ! Tells you everything you need to know if attempted murder and jailing of opposition leaders, attempted murder of Ukrainian leaders, murder of Putin critics and former KGB agents on foreign soil using chemical and nuclear substances, interference in USA Elections, cyber hacking and espionage, suppression of the free press and democracy in Russia ...is not enough.

@@grumblewoof4721 You start by making statement of opinion dressed as fact! You also like all MSM completely omit the fact the return of Crimea to the Russian Federation was done on the say so and free will of the population of that area! In Kosovo When it suited the USA (NATO) the exact same circumstance was 100% accepted and backed as democratic; but not when it’s the Crimea and Russia ? The people of Crimea voted in a referendum by 98% for independence and the west did not like the result and so issued sanctions on them for not voting ‘how the west wanted’ If the West and the MSM claim as they do that that they are annexed, why does the west attack the actual population with economic punishments? If they are annexed, then why starve them? No! the reality is that is punishment for voting democratically to leave Ukraine and become independent! The very fact that the Russia allowed all these satellite countries to leave in the first place cheapens your argument and despite continued assurance from NATO that they would not push east they did and have! Written and oral historic promises that NATO would not expand eastwards just totally ignored! Did Russia withdraw form the anti- ballistic missal treaty ? No! and they have now been forced into devolving new weapons due to that USA withdrawal. But still you say Russia is the aggressor no doubt? Then, even when the USA withdraw, Russia says it will not deploy any such weapons as long as USA ones do not deploy in Europe and the USA would not agree to that. Russian aggression again?
