Could Russia’s war on Ukraine escalate into a global cyberwar?

When Russia began amassing troops on Ukraine’s border in late 2021, many security experts predicted a similar build-up of Russian hackers along the ideological boundaries of cyberspace, ready to match any physical strike with an equally damaging virtual attack.
Months into Moscow’s brutal military invasion, a cyberwar of similar consequence has yet to materialize. But the threats of cyberwar have not gone away.
As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology across all walks of life, the potential for cyberwarfare to wreak havoc on society remains - whether in this conflict or the next.
So, what exactly could a cyberwar entail and how prepared are we? Watch the video above to find out.

Russia also had 20 times more tanks and APCs than Ukraine, and look now, they lost at Kiev, they lost at Karkiv, The never got to Odessa and they are stalled in a small city named Severndonesk for 8 weeks without being able to move. Dozens of Russian tanks broke down south of Belgorad before even making it to Ukraine, dozens more fell apart on the convoy to Kiev. If Russia launched 6000 nuclear weapons, probably half of them wouldn't leave the silos and the other half would land in russian territory. Even Russia's normal missiles are garbage, you aim for a weapons depot and end up hiting a shopping mall over 2kms away. And really, as soon as you launch the first nuclear missile, moscow would be destroyed. Think about this.. the Ukrainians built their own missiles named Neptune, and destroyed the Moscova which had the ' best missile defense system' that the Russians could build. Russia is a paper bear with a useless military. You cited Iraq.. while politically it was misguided, militarily we conquered Baghdad and took over control of the government in less than 3 days even though it is halfway around the world from us. Russia attacked its' neighbor with a surprise attack from its' own border... and is losing. Does anyone really believe that Russia, the country who can't even maintain tanks enough so they could drive 50 miles into Ukraine has been maintaining its nuclear weapons for 40 years since we collapsed you the first time? My guess is that all the money spent to maintain your nuclear weapons is now sitting in NY harbor in the form of a yacht that we will be selling on ebay soon.

@Hans Otto Kroeger Kaethler yeah, it was just a special donation of tanks and Russian blood to the farmers of Ukraine. The Ukrainian army has more and better equipment now than it did at the start of the war. NATO has two new members, Ukraine is joining the EU and the Moscova is at the bottom of the sea. And you are saying that was Putin's plan? Russia got their asses kicked before they could reach kiev, they got their asses kicked before they could reach Odessa and they had a billion dollar flagship to rust at the bottom of the sea. they didn't liberate mariupol or seiverndonesk..they destroyed those cities with inaccurate bombings..which they can't do anymore because now the real us weaponry is there.

Russia would never launch a long range megaton strategic defense nuke..it has no reason to start a global nuclear conflict and being a small economy concentrated in one area of Russia, the response would be devastating for Moscow. The safeguards against that in Russia being done unilaterally by Putin are pretty robust, with several people needed to physically enable a strike. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Putin and the Russian military using a small payload ie 70 kiloton tactical nuclear weapon, if it feels sufficiently threatened by Ukraine/Western longer range weapons landing on targets inside Russia..that is a distinct possibility, as tactical nuclear use is far less restricted in Russian military doctrine and as you said, they reserve the right to use it at any time they feel sufficiently threatened. I think it's more likely to happen since the US and NATO have made their positions clear, that if Russia were to use tactical nuclear in Ukraine, the US and NATO would not, and would stay conventional.

The global cyber warfare has been ongoing for decades as technology is evolving each day. Each chip, regardless where it's from, is the bridge to connect the networking traffic around the world, privately or publically. Even all the biggest names in business or in the government.

It's not the same as physical war though is it? Nobody dies (usually) no infrastructure is damaged..yes cyberwar is costly and damaging to our economy, but it's nothing like a real physical war..so there's no reason to escalate a cyberattack into a full blown physical war and make things worse. It's hard to separate too who are State operators in cyberwar attacks, and who are independent hacking orgs or groups, often there's some overlap. If it can be proved a State is behind a cyber attack then certainly we could declare its an act of war and demand compensation or apply financial/sanctions consequences.

@@paullangton-rogers2390 Well... people can die if the right target was taken out. Or for example, messing with water supply. Messing with hospitals. And on it goes. It would just take an motivated person to do some serious damage and harm people physically. OT is very much often mission critical and now can be quite easily targeted.
