I don't understand when people say, "this update will change minecraft forever." Isn't that kind of the point of an update?
@eon9241
@eon9241 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if that's true. There are iterative updates - evolutionary updates, I'll call them - and there are huge game changing updates - revolutionary updates. Buzzy Bees, The World of Colour, The Pretty Scary updates are evolutionary. Some of them are good (i like them bees) but they don't impact the way you play the game for the most part - just give you MORE stuff to do, fix bugs + QOL improvements. Updates like the old Adventure Update (which added hunger and sprinting), Village and Pillage, and the upcoming Caves and Cliffs are revolutionary. And I would say that CnC will actually be the more impactful of the revolutionary ones, because unlike the Nether Update, it will affect ALL of the players (a lot of people don't ever visit the nether but everyone who plays in generated worlds will interact with caves and especially the mountains).

I've been in the mapmaking scene for a long time and while I do understand how the sculk sensor is quite powerful and easy to understand, I really don't think it will resurrect minecraft map making. People are not just gonna have the sudden idea to make a map just because such a mechanic/block was added. It just was a trend back then. I really wish it's gonna come back one day cause there are so many unique and creative ideas for advantures and minigames people have created.

I think a big thing is less that maps aren't being made, and more that they're just hard to find. I'm in a community of people who regularly make all kinds of fun CTMs, for example (a genre spawned out of Vech's Superhostile series), and a whole bunch of maps were just recently released, but the problem is with the forums basically dying, it's hard to get the maps out there.

@@Spider2point0 That's a fair point. Also the player base is split between bedrock and Java now, complicating things. That said, anything that might get people interested in game design, even if it ends up only being small scale in their SMP servers, is a win in my book.

@@Spider2point0 yeah there is no site like the old planet minecraft which was fairly active for people to compare maps and on working projects. nowadays i look there and its either lots of skins, or really complex builds that id admire their photos but not something i would download and play. what hurt the site is also a bunch of clone sites like 7minecraft which really sucked. if a new wave of mapmakers will come it will have to come with a new site or forum for people to upload maps to, akin to what mojang gave bedrock, although maybe less focused on making profit.

Another option to calibrate the sculk sensor is to have it react to a powered comparator directly facing into it. The signal strength of the comparator would set what type of sounds the sensor would listen for. This would be quick to setup since sounds are already sorted into signal strengths.

Yeah, the issue definitely isn't that maps aren't being made--they 100% are! A big new CTM was just released recently, part 3 of the Pantheon series if you're familiar. (as someone who knows a fair bit about functions and modern mapmaking and the like) As much as accessibility towards mapmaking is great for getting people interested, I don't think the sculk sensor or any other survival-friendly change will really increase the amount of high-quality maps that are being made, because commands and functions would remain exactly as useful and powerful as before, but also exactly as inaccessible. It certainly eases the curve between basic redstone and more complex contraptions, but it does nothing to the sheer cliff between redstone and commands -- the only way to learn commands is through endless hours on the wiki or youtube tutorials. If a lot more maps would be made, that's great, but I'd hate to see a million fairly bad maps with still only a very small amount of people being able to make more complicated, polished, and advanced stuff with functions and commands. If Mojang really wants to revive mapmaking or make it more accessible, ingame ways to learn those things would be preferable to ease of access to mapmaking without commands in my opinion.
@eon9241
@eon9241 3 жыл бұрын
I'll take having hundreds of terrible maps if there's even a chance we might get 1 truly great map out of it. And having more people interested in map making creates more opportunities for something good to be created, kind of like the million monkeys on a typewriter concept. Having a community that welcomes all kinds of players, be it a beginner or a savant, really helps to learn from one another, and people get to slowly dip their toes into more complex techniques once there is a door in. I have played a lot with command blocks, and was quite proficient before "The Flattening", but at the time my dwindling interest in MC, going to uni and having to re-learn command blocks put a stop to any map making. It's been kind of hard to justify getting back into the complex commands and starting to learn syntax pretty much from scratch, but I have been enjoying survival redstone a lot which is still the same as it always been, so I could see skulk getting me back into some light dungeon making.
@theviralmelon
@theviralmelon 3 жыл бұрын
@@eon9241 well exactly. there's almost no way to learn commands, which are by far the most powerful mapmaking tool, even though a lot of people who would be interested in mapmaking would probably be capable of learning them if given the proper resources--my point is, mojang should give us those resources in some shape or form if they want to really make mapmaking a thing
@eon9241
@eon9241 3 жыл бұрын
@@theviralmelon I totally agree. For me the most helpful way of working is just doing something until it works. Spending time tinkering just gives practical hands on experience and I just figure it out (the wiki is the documentation primary tool for me). But this idea kind of fails when there is no good dedicated forum to share/archive your creations, or to even find other people's stuff for reference or inspiration. As far as I understand most MC forums are dying or are not well moderated so if Mojang made a nice official forum with a map makers' section for sharing, that would be great. To me a well maintained and active centralised forum is the best way to solve many of these issues. Unless of course something like that exists, and I just don't know about it - could easily be the case ngl.
@theviralmelon
@theviralmelon 3 жыл бұрын
@Michael Schwab well, that's another argument for it. you can learn more advanced comamnds as you go on, but it becomes really hard at a higher level of complexity using execute store or loottables or scoreboard operation requires tons of research and knowledge and coding skills, it gets pretty hard to just pick up at that point, doing stuff like learning the syntax for nbt pathing

I used to make some top-notch adventure and dungeon raid maps in the old days of Minecraft Editions on Ps3 and Ps4. Ever since Minecraft Bedrock introduced command blocks, my spark for creating redstone and host-controlled maps died completely. I've never "published" any of these maps, and don't plan on it. They were more of a way to make memories with friends and give them a fun experience on the Minecraft platform they would play the most. Command blocks made my creations feel small and clunky, even though they could work in any version before command blocks were added. Even though command blocks are essential for modern map creation, I miss the old days, but doesn't everybody?

I've been playing older versions (on infdev right now) and I want to try making custom dungeons in my world and see how far I can get in each version. The warden is sooooo fuckin boring. Not the mechanic but the model. It's just a fuckin retextured iron golem with muscles. At least make it be able to climb on walls and camouflage and also have tentacles and like spider legs. Make it an abomination that you don't want to fight. That would be much better. Because the Mojang team keep saying "We don't want players to fight this thing." THEN MAKE IT FUCKIN SCARY INSTEAD OF IT LOOKIN LIKE A BLUE IRON GOLEM. THE ENDERMAN WAS SCARY BECAUSE IT LOOKED LIKE SLENDER MAN AND WAS REALLY CREEPY! Went off on a tangent there. Sorry.

@@doriantermini Well what makes the warden scary is that it makes you ditch everything the game taught you. Can't win the battle? Just run. But not with the warden. You're in a tight space when encountering this thing, and it's surprisingly quick. Plus you're just fucked if it catches you, seeing as it 2 shot full netherite. Want to cheese the battle? Just build a wall or build up. With what the dev of the warden is implying, it's gonna be able to break blocks, meaning you'll only be able to tower out of its reach. Since it's a boss like enemy I doubt even a power 5 bow will do all too much. And while yes it's pretty much a retextured iron golem, I'd much prefer that than it looking like any other enemy type. And also everything you described to make the warden scary would probably be too exhausting for the devs to create. I'd rather the warden being textured the the sculk and being a retextrued iron golem, than looking like some random devintart model.

As a Realms mapmaker and co-owner of the largest minecraft map website in Poland I'm afraid that it wouldn't be enough to resurrect this aspect of the game. Minecraft is promoted by youtubers and their content, not what gets added to the game. The only way to revive map making would be if the new big youtubers like Dream, Tommyinit and others started recording and promoting maps. Without that, the community doesn't even realize what can be done using minecraft and its commands. A good example of this is the case of youtuber "Roxmb", who used to record maps regularly. This attracted thousands of users to our site and encouraged them to create. However, when this youtuber stopped recording about a year ago, all activity disappeared from the website. Map making despite the work Mojang has done, will never become more popular unless youtubers start recording maps regularly.

Oh this video hits hard. I’ve been with your channel from back in those days when I was the owner of the AKA|Minecraft build team. I’d love to see a comeback of map making outside of the heavily modded bedrock marketplace. I miss working with cube and eease on random concepts, the geeking out about command block fill clocks, and getting torture by Dragnoz while working on his snow quake game (poor one out for that). This video just gave me heavy nostalgia for 6 years ago in the height of map making. Side note I do love what you have done with the channel. The production quality is truest the star of the show and you are a great concept commutator. I hope to see or hear you on TV one day narrating. PS I lost contact with everyone after I walked away from MC back in ‘13. Imo another big reason for the decline of map making is the rise of datapacks. I find most people with technical skill (including myself) would rather make survival oriented content rather than custom maps. For example, datapacks like Mechanization, The Creeper's Code, Immersive Cooking, Undermagic, Cave Biomes, Incendium, The Expansion (among 100s of smaller datapacks) all provide large amounts of survival oriented content, and all take a large amount of time to create and maintain. Just a few years ago, the authors of those packs would have been making custom maps instead.
@eon9241
@eon9241 3 жыл бұрын
Do you think so? To me data packs are closer to mods in the way you design them and think about them than custom maps. So are data packs "stealing" from the ranks of map makers, or are they opening doors for people who would like to mod, but don't want to learn how to code?
@icy73
@icy73 3 жыл бұрын
@@eon9241 Mixture of both. There are definitely people now who get into making datapacks to make mod like content- but there are also a people who would be making maps if they weren't focusing on mod-like datapacks. Over a past few years I've made a few custom maps for various competitions, and I think it's safe to say I would be making more custom maps if I wasn't make survival-oriented datapacks.

@@eon9241 I mean, datapacks still require writing code. It's just in the form of Minecraft commands rather than Java or whatever. I say this as someone who knows how to code, but vastly prefers working with datapacks if I'm going to make things for Minecraft
@eon9241
@eon9241 3 жыл бұрын
@@Yirggzmb That's true. I think data packs are also great because of how portable they are. You don't need to have nodded clients or servers, it's just some text. Makes it a lot easier to share and, correct me if I'm wrong, but they generally don't need to be updated between versions unlike mods.

One of the greatest things about sculk sensors is they don't make noise if waterlogged. i don't know about shriekers, but if that too, that would be so cool. you can make it summon a warden quietly without warning. they walk by, next thing you know WARDENS. or, if you watched Sarc's wacky sculk redstone video, it would make a silent player detector, which we've only been able to do with commands.

I was intersted in mapmaking a long time ago, but when command blocks were created, it started to feel out of reach as someone who had no experience coding. This video hit the nail on the head for me as someone who is deeply ingrained in the redstone community, intersted in mapmaking, but is primarily a survival player. I think the Sculk Sensor should not even have a limit on how often it can emit a Redstone signal in response to a vibration. This would solve most of the problems with the sensor being tripped by vibrations that it's not meant to detect, and then being effectively "closed-off" for two seconds while the intended vibration goes undetected.
