It would live on, sure, but it would likely lose a lot of players. I think a lot of people would get really bored of the game if there was never any new content, because even though you can technically do whatever you want, there does come a point when you’ve kind of done everything. Servers would probably keep a lot of the players interested though

I've seen people bring back games that were absolutely dead in the water with full legacy servers and player authentication. People would lose the stuff on their old accounts yes, but they wouldn't stop playing. They would just make a new account on the legacy server. I don't doubt someone would figure it out. If all else failed, deadass, I bet you that someone would rebuild it from the ground up, no joke. Minecraft fans can be REALLY dedicated.

There is almost no chance that hytale can kill minecraft since hytale seems to be a blend of sandbox and rpg while minecraft is sandbox with minor rpg elements. The thing with Minecraft is that it's one of *very* few games that's proven to be truly multi-generational. That's it's strongest asset. It defies trends. The gameplay loop satisfies this deep urge in the human brain. You could go 100 years into the past or the future and kids would still love it. That's why, design wise, I think it'd be really difficult to knock Minecraft off it's stride.

@Blade Gaming I don't think any cave mod successfully pulled off local water levels, though. Plus, the 1.17 cave biomes are already miles better than any cave biome mod I've seen. The addition of copper also fixes the really big issue of having way too many mods add their own version of copper. Mods have done what 1.17 is doing, but only in small amounts, and now it's going to be available for every player.

The only thing that could destroy Minecraft is the expansion of the sun into a red giant which, while it doesn't necessarily mean the end of humanity, as we will likely have space travel by then, would evaporate all water on earth and render it inhospitable. If humanity has already colonized other planets by then, it is likely Minecraft will survive even that, and will continue to survive until the inevitable heat death of the universe/freezing over of the universe/total collapse of the universe/imploding of the universe leading to a second big bang that would start the cycle over again and have Minecraft be created again in a different world

Scenario 4; critical design error, seems to be the most likely right now, with the kerfuffle of "singleplayer banning" and poor moderation of Bedrock now seemingly creeping its way into Java edition despite massive community pushback against the idea. Sarc here’s the problem with the “if Minecraft Java doesn’t update modding will suffer” isn’t 100% true. There are lots of Minecraft mods (and by extension mod packs) that use the 1.12.2 version of game, it hasn’t evolved, yes, but there still are people who play and make mods for that version, yes there are mods for more recent versions (1.14-1.16 specifically that I’m referring to at the time of me writing) but 1.12 has more than enough for someone to enjoy if they felt like it, active or not.

Addressing all these ideas one at a time: 1. Minecraft will stop updating. This is going to happen. 100%. I'm not going to say that it won't ever happen, but I WILL say that this will, in no way, kill the game or the franchise. One of two things will happen: a. Mojang discontinues Minecraft and continues to develop games such as Dungeons or some other thing, all is good and modders continue coddling the game as you said. b. Minecraft will receive a sequel (lmao Minecraft 2) that will run off an engine that ISN'T 10 years old and it will be even better than the original, drawing in even more new players. 2. Minecraft is sold to a greedy company. This is like saying that Nintendo would sell the Mario Bros franchise to Bethesda. Not going to happen. Minecraft is the single biggest video game IN THE WORLD, and even if it loses popularity at some point, Microsoft knows much, much, much better than to sell it to some scummy company for a quick buck. 3. Minecraft is killed by a competitor. Sure, I'll admit that some times that some games have stolen Minecraft's thunder. Fortnite did it, Hytale will ~probably~ do it too, but there's just one thing. While some games may steal it's thunder, Minecraft isn't a bolt of lightning. It's the whole godd*mn storm. It will always come back until all the original developers die of old age. 4. Minecraft will accidentally ruin the game for everyone. Historically Minecraft has had a very open relationship with it's audience and consumers. They chose what mobs and biomes are added, they give full disclosure to exactly what the new updates are going to be, and if they do end up doing something like this, it will never see the light of day when Mojang sees the backlash from the community. Unless Mojang undergoes a complete change in staff and business model, not gonna happen. 5. Outside parties will restrict Minecraft in some way. This could happen, remembering all the stuff that happened with Turkey banning Minecraft and all that, but it won't kill the game. Mojang isn't a small indie indie development company, it's a multi-billion dollar company that is backed by one of the largest companies in the entire world, Microsoft. It will come across hurdles, but it's never going to trip on them. 6. Minecraft charges for updates. Once again, the current company would never do this. I agree with your points on why this wouldn't happen. 7. At some point, a developer had committed IP theft and the owner of the code takes legal action. I doubt this, as a lot of the original code is outdated and has been discarded, and as the company grew larger I am positive that Mojang would have solved any sort of problems that would have arose, before they would ever happen. (If there was ever even a problem). This wouldn't happen in the future either, as Mojang probably has a very good legal team to protect it. 8. Java edition is abandoned. HAHAHAHA, no. This would screw over independently owned servers in sooooo many ways, and a lot of them would shut down. And the points you made about moding and entertainers playing on Java only proves further how bad of an idea it is to stop it's development. Mojang is a smart company and they wouldn't do this. 9. Microsoft restricts their guidelines and claims revenue from creators. This is in general just a really bad business strategy. Even creators that make Minecraft videos for fun rely on add revenue, and if that supply was cut off they would stop making videos and Mojang would lose 100% of their most relatable and enjoyable advertisement for viewers that might want to play the game at some point. 10. The world moves on. Sure, this could happen, nobody can be for certain what the future will hold. But not anytime soon. Yeah, I think that unless Mojang undergoes a total change in their company and business model for the very worse, everything will be fine. Edit: Fuck.

The one thing I would argue about other games taking over is you said the audience has had the chance to pick mobs. True...but false at the same time. Audience is given a short list of mobs they can pick from , and they pick the ones they like the most. When it comes to mobs the audience has been repeatedly been asking for? They've been ignored, on the whole, or claiming it's too difficult to implement...meanwhile modders have no problems implementing said mobs...or anything really that has been asked for. With this said, modders have been working to make their own games while listening to their audience. I dont really know much about Hytale, except it was made by a modder. But I have seen another game Vintage Story, that was also created by a modder that was quite impressive, enough in my opinion to be a worthy rival when fully released. If these modders can do such a good job while actually really listening to the audience, we could see a future rival game taking it out of at least the top spot for the genre.

What about overbloating Minecraft with a ton of updates? I think it could either end up making Minecraft unplayable with more technicalities for existing features like combat, remembering what each and every mob does, and how each and every item works and what can be crafted/smelted/brewed into other items, or making Minecraft so easy, it’s neither funny, nor fun because the whole challenge was removed. Honestly, I think Minecraft’s experiencing a little bit of both, as it is a far more complex game than in the early days, and yet it is much easier than it too.

I would hope that Mojang's business model would keep them from having something like this happen since they are so responsive to their community for input, but if they were to stop doing this or be forced to make more updates, I can definitely see how this would really damage the player base and the game's chances of picking up any new players. Minecraft is sitting in a rather precarious position in this regard, shown by how now "bundles" have needed to be added just to counteract the huge amount of different items the game has. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't get too much worse.

before watching, I honestly think that what would kill minecraft would be if Microsoft stopped allowing you to download and play older versions of the game that would kill off probably half if not more of the player base, I'd guess

Yeah it defiently would modding as a whole would be dropped and going back to the good old days wouldn't be a possibility anymore regardless of how clunky it might be or odd in the older versions having that freedom to go back is nice only thing I wish is that the sprint button was added so much earlier god I don't know how I managed with it ;-; was such an annoying feature IMO especially for PVP I remember getting tripped up because of it
