In this Football Manager 2023 video I find what would happen if all the the players eligible for Suriname declared for them instead of the Netherlands. Could it be enough to take them all the way to a World Cup win?

That was pretty cool. A suggestion for a future one could be what would happen to France if you changed all of their players to their second nationality? Could imagine the French squad would be a lot worse off and some African nations would improve vastly.

DR Congo have a HUGE pool of dual-nationality stars, in fm18 I used the editor to switch all the Congolese players allegiances. Assombalonga and Lukaku had a sensational partnership

I sign a wonderkid from Suriname, when managing Barcelona in the 2050s, who had played 22 times and score 6 for Suriname by the age of 19. He was a CB and was being used as a CM in the national team despite not being able to play there because he was their best player. He was sold to PSG by the AI after I left the job and I checked. He had 180 PA after coming from a non-descript South American team.

Similar to Suriname, Indonesia also has plenty of dual-nationality player (most of it are Dutch). In fact, some of it are from European top flight league (e.g. Tommy St. Jago, Pascal Struijk, Neraysho Kasanwirjo [he also has Surinamese blood, seen in this video], Jairo Riedewald, Million Manhoef, etc.). Maybe u should do that as well for the next video.

None of those players would ever play for Indonesia just like the majority of Dutch players wouldnt want to play for Suriname. The money, the bureaucracy and corruption is just not good enough.

Love this. Done this on FM13 changing uncapped players to declare for Suriname and it was so much fun. One of my favourite saves. Also either done it with or considered this with Jamaica, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau. Some African nations have been fun but most are pretty established. If Martinique or Guadeloupe could qualify for a WC that would be a lot of fun. Might try Curacao next as they have been progressing IRL. Love the video Matt!

cool video, similar to like other people have said, those with French first nationality being changed to their second and looking at several countries (like Guinea-Bissau, DR Congo, Martinique to name a few) could be a cool way to expand on the idea. keep these up, love the alternate universes/super agent stuff you've been doing :))

Interesting to see a good handful of the real players signing for Mexican clubs, as in real life there’s never been a Surinamese in Liga MX before. Taking away French nationality from those dual nationals could be really fun.

I always wondered what would nations like Suriname and/or Curaçao fare if they were to keep their talent, so glad to see this experiment. .P.S.: After watching Jamaica reaching two Gold Cup finals in a row (and winning one) during this experiment I wonder how much would Jamaica improve if all the AngloJamaican players were to declare for the "Reggae Boys"

It's interesting because would all these Surinamese players have developed as well as they have if they weren't Dutch? Since a lot of them were born in the Netherlands to Surinamese parents, making them at the very least Dutch born. And I don't think it's unfair to say that Dutch clubs have beter developmental infrastructure than the Surinamese clubs.

@@harrybeddoe8205 Your point is? Nationality is more than a birthplace and if you were to take a look in the national team compositions is not weird to find a few players that fit this situation. And if you think that cases like the one on this experiment are impossible to see in real life, then let me remind you of the Albanian national squad for the Euro 2016: The overwhelming majority of the squad was not born in Albanian ground as they came from countries like the neighbouring Kosovo, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Italy and even Spain. If a nation like Albania could do it in real life, why can't Suriname do it in a fictional scenario for a videogame?

South America clubs have some absurd names. I always have been partial to the Tanzanian club Simba SC who are actually starting to turn into a bit of an African giant (made top 8 in African Champions League 3 of last 5 seasons) and are arguably the best African team not from North Africa right now

Great video. I think more of these style of one hit videos are great to dive into. I sometimes feel if I miss the start of a series it can be hard to jump in halfway through. These longer videos on one project/experiment are a lot easier to consume vs 60 part series.

I had a save with Curacao and found a lot of players with them as a second nationality. They could be worth trying Another way could be choosing a nation like New Zealand or the UAE and setting the best youth players in the top 5 leagues, or even 5 smaller leagues (Austria, Scotland, Poland etc) to that nationality and see if you can build a squad from that

It's a shame that Becker, Pinas and Haas never lived up to their potentials. They all had the chance to be great, but failed to make that kind of impact. With three additional players of 150+ CA the core of the team would be quite good. I wonder if additionally to bad luck with injuries and bad personalities they suffered from not being Dutch anymore. If I understood the method of editing them to be only surinamese correctly, you turned their Dutch nationality into Surinamese, therefore removing the EU-Player-Status, i suspect. Maybe that has a negative impact on their ability to play games, because of the registration rules. Normally they are even stricter in Youth Leagues and for second teams. Maybe it had no impact at all, but it was something I wondered from the start of the video and seeing so many top prospects never making it, I wonder if it did hinder them.

I suspect that the rules would still be fine, as they would almost all gain home grown status in a few seasons, likely before they ever come close to playing for the first team

Probably would be tricky, but could do some proposed/past Unions coming to fruition like EAU (DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan), Sahel States (Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea), Gran Colombia (Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Venezuela), Yugoslavia (Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo)

Nowadays actually many Dutch players who had little or no success in the Dutch national team, declared for Suriname So this is a bit realistic as well (but not like VVD level players, but still known ones, for me at least)

Mozambique, Cape Verde and Sao Tome & Principe are common secondaries for Portuguese players as well although I don't believe as many gen as Surnamese for the Netherlands. Angola is likely the most common (no data just running off my memory of briefly doing a Portugal rags to riches climb save).

I have noted that at 16:44 for Haiti scored guy called Lubin, which is a name of a town in Poland where I actually live. In Lubin is located club KGHM Zaglebie Lubin which competes in Polish top flight. That is crazy for me! As a side note for anyone intrested, Lubin is pretty small town, ~70k people where is located main sponsor of the town and football club KGHM that is one of the biggest producer in copper mining industry.

I used Timo's databases, which can be downloaded from FMScout, usually by this time of year he has made most league's playable so it the perfect time for videos like this :)
