The back of the intake valve is sprayed with petrol don’t forget , any oil would be washed into the cylinder anyhow . I think leaving some redex to soak in the cylinder might be better than additives to oil . Might be worth venting the crankcase better to eliminate pressure on overrun .

This is the best diagnostic (from RichieRich) I've seen and some engines are designed to burn a little oil when running , specifically V8's. I think what is in the cylinders is possibly only fuel. People tend to start a Ferrari and then rev the engine .......which is the fastest way to wear it out as it should be allowed to warm up and get oil circulating before giving high revs. Those cylinders only looked to have fuel in there, but I would check the crankcase breathing as said above as that could push crankcase vapours into the cylinders, but the plugs aren't fouling with oil. I would just be enjoying it as it is.

the best solution is to tear the engine down replace all the rings and journal bearings and reassemble, what it looks like in the cylinders scope is green antifreeze in the mount where the carb meets the manifold, did have a mixture of black smoke around 3500 to 4500 rpm and small puffs of white smoke you may have a shattered oil scraper ring! what I have done with cars that have sat for a while before starting in to make Michela 2 stroke oil and some gas and pour one fl oz down each cylinder and let set overnight, fire the engine up and the add 1/@ oz to each cylinder one at a time start check kind of smoke and continue to the next cylinder have found bad valves this way

You suspect the oil is collecting on the cylinder bores during use and then, once the engine is stopped, running down the bores and pooling on the piston crowns? If this is the case then you need to run the engine and make sure that, when you stop it, one of the pistons is at TDC. Then leave it for a few days. Since this piston is at TDC it would be impossible for oil on the bore walls to run down onto that piston, because it is at TDC, so if there is any oil on that piston, it must have come from above.

Go careful with oil additives. You loosen crud that’s built up elsewhere in the oil system, you might block an oil gallery or something. I would consider a small amount of diesel introduced from the top, turn it over by hand and let it sit for a while. But consider this - it’s running far far better than it has since you got it, the smoke is minimal, the oil build up is minimal in those cylinder… Use it! Don’t mess for the rest of the summer. Just take it out and keep an eye on it. Enjoy it and slake your thirst for masochism with the Lotus!!

These cars do exactly what the subject car is doing if not driven hard frequently. As a former garage owner servicing Ferraris, Alfas etc they need a hard drive to keep from clogging up. A short thrash on a local B road is not enough and urban driving at low engine speeds with lots of idling is a disaster for these old tech performance engines. Appears not too bad to me, nothing a sustained hard drive wouldn`t most likely cure. If you really want to put your mind to rest give it a leak down test, but I think Jack is worrying about very little. Keeps subject matter for the videos going though doesn`t it.

Back in the day when I was a mechanic, I would always advise not to do a top end only overhaul as my experience was that often the bottom end would fail shortly afterwards. I used to describe it to the customer as, imagine an old man, every bit has aged the same, improve one part and it throws pressure onto the other parts which are still old
@jhndijkman
@jhndijkman 3 жыл бұрын
Nickolas Carter is right. When restoring the heads you are of course sealing up all the possible ways compression can escape from the bores (head wise at least). So the next weakest link in compression loss will be blow by passed the worn piston rings. Which then compresses the crankcase. As with all engines they must have a PCV valve which takes the crankcase gases to be burned through the intake manifold. The only sure fix for this is really is new rings on the deglazed bores. Engines with higher milage with newly sealed up heads can also put extra loads on the the big end bearings and create big end knock. Good luck.

After the tracks in the intake port, the thought of a clogged crankcase ventilation occurred to me. If the pressure in the housing is high enough, the blow-by gases tear out of the crank drive, and if they suddenly escape, a considerable amount of oil droplets flow with them, which then make their way through the inlet duct via the vent and the carburettor. This phenomenon occurred very often in the past on the EA 827 from VW and is still present today in various modern engines after greater mileage and especially with the currently usual oil change intervals. These circumstances virtually cause the crankcase ventilation to be “lacquered”. Perhaps another possible item on the maintenance or inspection agenda?

It appears to blow smoke after periods of high vacuum (ie idle or gear changes). If the oil control rings were bad then I would expect it to smoke continuously when you put your foot down. If the oil is not getting past the valve stem seals then check out any PCV valve or breather pipe. Plug any such system up and test again out on the road. If that fails then it may be oil control rings but I cannot see why they should suddenly go bad. Anyhow i will be fascinated when you find the answer. Cheers!

@davidbuchanan2106 3 жыл бұрын
They do, basically they work by increasing the viscosity index of the oil; a 15w/40 can be turned into 20w/50 or thicker very easily. However, there is are downsides - 1) they suck bhp (because of increased frictional losses) and you’ll definitely feel it will be lower on power, 2) in lower temperatures you will need to be careful to warm up the engine before using it in anger as the oil might well display unusually poor winter (cold) performance characteristics. Kept in a garage, you’re probably ok, but a Ferrari dealer will confirm the operating tolerances that the engine will accept without damage to it - better some smoke than a lack of lubricant to critical components at start up. Watched the video - probably oil ring wear on pistons is my guess, for the age of car I’d say it’s pretty good..

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime...:-((

@@MagicAyrtonforever That's an excellent point. Which reminds me, there are engineers who recommend never restoring full compression on a high-mileage engine with a head rebuild, even if it seems mechanically perfect otherwise - the rings can be worn so thin they can shatter with the restored compression. I remember when I was a kid, my dad was told this by a _very_ good independent (Alfa and BMW trained) mechanic (Mike Sasso was his name) who had to do exactly that on dad's Alfa 105 GTJ (1600) at (IIRC) c. 46K miles- he very carefully checked the bores before agreeing to do the head, looking for glazing and lack of honing marks, but fortunately they were still there. The car ran beautifully afterwards - daily driving and a couple of trips to Italy in the following few years.

I did t believe in them until I used liquimoly diesel purge on our caddy due to slightly rough running and actually could see on software it balance the injector readings right up. Great stuff. I imagine it depends what you are hoping to cure.

Soak the cylinders with a good cleaner then do an "Italian tuneup", drive this thing HARD for a long time. That may free up the rings.

run some two stroke mix through it, that will free off the ring's or leave some diesel in the bore's overnight.

My thoughts, not to be taken too seriously. Maybe someone over filled the oil some time back and maybe that popped a couple of the piston rings? So a bit of bottom end after all, but not too cataclysmic.

Does the 308 have crank case ventilation system that vents into the intake??..... If it does, remove the pipes from the air filter box, and see if it changes anything.. If it does, fit catch can and block the pipe inlet into the air filter box.....

I can't recall - have you done a leak -down test yet ? Not that hard to force high pressure air into the cylinder to see if it gets past the rings into the sump and out the oil breather / recirc system. By all means drive and enjoy the car but I would be tempted to replace the valve stem oil seals without removing the head if at all possible - so often the cause of smoke after a period of high vacuum on the overrun. This is mainly about jury-rigging a way to compress the valve spring without access to the cylinder combustion chamber area; you would need to fabricate a lever arrangement bolting a stud into existing threads in the cyl head top. Don't give up !

Hi Jack, yes try the adatives you can get good results from these products and usage of the car can really bring things back, the control rings have small triangle resesses and old static oil can gum then up!! The old timers used to move to a thicker oil to avoid bypass but this must be checked out ?? That car has probably stood around Alot and engines love to run..! I used Wynne's on my XR2 and it made difference after 300mil Best of luck Jack. Thumbs up (:

The big nut on steering column is often the culprit for steering play. Had the same issue on my 5 series e28, removed 90% of the play. Now it just needs a little steering box adjustment and the steering center rod to be changed. The pistons looks a bit oily, but to be honest I don't know if there was really oil in the recesses. Looked kinda wet but sometimes you could clearly see the shape in the piston. It smokes on startup but I've seen worse (my Alfa Sud Sprint omg, it's a mess). Anyway great work and determination as usual. Cheers from France 👍

Gases do indeed flow back up the ports toward the carbs (or TB) at certain points in the rev range, especially on n/a motors with lots of valve overlap. Have you done compression and leakdown tests? Yes it's possible you have good compression and leak-down but find a stuck oil control ring, but it's a start.

I just commented on your previous video about using a borescope, well done. You need to be looking at the cylinder walls, look for vertical lines or waves. Trust me, I'm 99.9% sure this is your issue. A proper leakdown test will show you which cylinders are the issue. To get your borescope to see the sides of the cylinder walls just push it in at an angel, once it hit the piston, keep pushing so it moves the camera sideways to have a proper look at the walls. If you want to "buy time" and enjoy the car for a while before rebuilding it, add some thick oil burning additive for a temporary band aid.

Over the years on our race bikes the oil is so important , and each bike brand has a sweet spot weight that stops the oil pushing up from under the rings . and synthetic oils allow us to gain more hp using lower grades . but there is a sweet spot before it blows past the rings

One of the things I would try is to put some ATF in the cylinder and let it soak in. Then do a dry start without plugs and blow the crud out. The second thing I would do is start the car and drive it a bit until warm and up to temp. Then while idling add a quart of cheap ATF in the crankcase and let it idle for 10min or so. Do an oil change right after. ATF has some crazy strong detergents. ATF has allowed me to save two different engines in the past. Once you do an oil change go and do an Italian tune up. It may free the rings. Also look into a liquid molybdenum additive. It stains everything but there is no better lubricant for high stress moving parts.
