@@willchug what is X-pattern?
@kadestorm Жыл бұрын
@@WillVRam It’s a reference to two pairs of different speakers installed in an x-like configuration pattern within a 4x12 cabinet. From the first pair, one on the top left and the other on the bottom right. The second pair’s speakers on the top right and bottom left. Or vice versa. This forms the x pattern.

@@kadestorm and what is the pourpouse behind it?
@kadestorm Жыл бұрын
@@WillVRam Having a blended and slightly varied sound rather than just the standard one would get from the same speakers. Sometimes, people like to blend the upper midrange of the Celestion Vintage 30 with something smoother and darker. It can also help in studio and live settings as one can have multiple mics on different speakers within the same cabinet to blend the recorded/monitor tone. Ultimately, it’s all a matter of personal preference and what one desires from the mix as well as feel from the cabinet.

I sold my Fireball 100 to pay for my Savage 120 MK2 & in many ways, I wish I'd not done that. I really miss its less tight distortion. Its high gain tone was the favorite I've owned. But, I think there was something wrong with the clean channel. I couldn't even get the gain know to 9:00 and it was already breaking. It had pretty much no clean sound at all. I also didn't like the shared EQ. But those issues aside, it was an incredible sounding high gain amp & I miss it.

I've never owned an Fireball, but I borrowed one from a friend for a tour and thought it sounded amazing! I believe Michael Romeo of Symphony X used one for a while, and they're one of my favourite bands of all time. I'm happy enough with my Axe FX II through a Zilla Fat Boy 2x12 cab though.

P.S - What do you think is the best bet to create a tone similar to Metallica's Master of Puppets and "Black Album" era tone? EMG's or the passives they used in studio for MOP? Cheers!
@SonicDriveStudio Жыл бұрын
Can't go wrong with EMGs
@kadestorm Жыл бұрын
@@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE EMGs are great, especially for the Black album tone. However, Master of Puppets, as you know had James using a Jackson V with the Seymour Duncan Invader, which is a uniquely monstrous pickup in its own right and in my opinion, better than the EMG offerings. Hell, I prefer aspects of the tone on Master of Puppets compared to the Black album. Technically, with the right EQ, cabinet and microphone arrangement (or impulse response), one could approximate any of those album tones, but if one's looking for a straight forward and raw approach with the pickups for the MoP tone, the Invader with a boosted Marshall will get the job done.
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE Жыл бұрын
@@kadestorm Thanks for the detailed reply! "The Black Album" is probably my favourite heavy rhythm guitar tone of all time (Through The Never, Of Wolf and Man, the verse riff of "Enter Sandman" etc...), but Master of Puppets has its own killer sound, as you say. I'm more of a lead player, who uses .08 gauge strings (!) in Drop D normally haha... but I might be getting an Epiphone "Explorer" type guitar with EMG 81/85 on a great deal soon, so I'd love to set that up as a James Hetfield type rhythm studio guitar, with 11's, I believe he used, I might get a separate ~.56/.58 gauge low string to compensate for me playing in Drop D rather than E standard. I have an AXE FX II, so the amp/EQ angle should be very easy to achieve, but the pickups of a guitar make all of the difference (for instance I recently picked up a 2001 MIK Squier Stagemaster HH Deluxe - it's a beautiful guitar, that plays like a dream, but the pickups are horrible - I'm going to put an Dimarzio EVO2 in the bridge, as I love Steve Vai's sound). Cheers!

I actually love those amps with which you have to make certain compromises like a shared EQ. The Powerball 60 even has a shared gain knob. Nevertheless I even played that amp in a top 40 cover band with one or two distortion pedals in front. The pushed clean channel also sounds surprisingly well when cranking the gain and the mids. Like a vintage sound with a modern touch (tightness). It gives those 70s classic rock tunes a modern feel, yet retaining the lower gain level.
