The Silver Spade lower birth rates comes when nations are at their peak of development, this has been true for the majority of developed nations (example Japan)
@sebastian5671
@sebastian5671 6 жыл бұрын
No high birth rates in Africa come from general undevelopment. If this is their peak of development I see no hope for them. Your example japan is because of the war. A lot of Japanese people died in the war leaving space for new Japanese. Families started again, modernized food methods came aswell meaning they could grow their population substantially. The largest reason is no birth control and their low development leading to families having more children as a sort of ‘pension’ system.

*Dude, I'm late but I hope you see this comment*. Hi! Tanzanian here. Deeply interested in geopolitics (among many other things). Thank you for this video. Thank you thank you thank you! Let me comment on some stuff. Alright, It's a very well-made video and what you've presented here is mostly factual. Good job on the research. I want to add some stuff, from a pro-EAC perspective. The EAC is basically fastly becoming a country at this point. We have a flag, a constitution, a parliament (which is quite active btw), an official capital city (Arusha), a Common Market (since 2010), a Customs Union and a somewhat cooperative Political Federation (a General Secretary office exists already, since 2006). A Monetary Union is on track but kinda being slowed down esp. by Kenya because their currency is stronger than the rest of the block. But generally things seem to be going smoothly except, in my opinion, the ascension of South Sudan to the Treaty in 2016. In my honest opinion, South Sudan still has a lot to sort out but hey maybe them being in the EAC along with the rest of us will help them. I hope it does. East Africa is an AMAZING place. Peaceful, respectful people, full of culture, life and diversity. Major people groups in East Africa are Bantu and Nilotic with substantial numbers of Cushites as well. Lots of people with Indian, Arab and Far East ancestry too esp. in east East Africa. Also more than a few expats too (PeaceCorps, volunteers, social workers, businessmen, intermarriages et cetera) I wish I could write a lot more on this because the political history which got us where we are is multilayered and interesting asf but it's 3.30am here where I am and I need to be up early tomorrow. Oh, fun fact: The official name for this union so far is 'Jumuiya ya Afrika Mashariki' which translates to East Africa Community. Swahili is the most widely spoken African language in Africa and therefore the world. In Africa it's the 4th most spoken behind French, Arabic and English but these aren't African. Also, another fun fact: the units of currency in East Africa, the 'shillings', derive their names from the 'schilling', the old Austrian-German monetary unit. This was because most of what is now East Africa was colonized by the Germans before WW1. Some traces of the German influence can still be seen today in the Swahili language or in the old architecture along the coastal cities of Tanzania. Thanks bro.I enjoyed the video on Kurdistan as well. Very interesting. Keep it up. Been kinda busy lately but anyone feel free to hit me up on hangouts if you need any more info (or just to make friends). Karibu :)

You are right. As East Africans, we have quite a lot in common and even learn about the histories of the rest of East Africa as if it were our own. I am Kenyan and in school we learnt about the Tanzanian & Ugandan Independence struggles just as intimately as our own from the Maji Maji rebellion to the emergence of African political parties, formation of TANU to CCM etc and like wise about the Kingdoms in Uganda and its post colonial coups. However these things existed at independence (the customs union, currency, postal union, single airline and single ports and railways body) and the region (Ke, Tz, Ug) operated largely as a single country.They still they failed to form a united country. Me thinks that this new attempt will fail because the structure is much the same as the old one, that is: power is concentrated in the presidential summit. The EAC needs the approval of the presidents even to just roll out a common international passport. This structure plagued us with the governors council during the colonial period and during the post colonial period and will continue to be a challenge as no president or government would willingly dissolve its power to participate in a structure. This structure leaves us vulnerable to the whims and squabbles between the leaders (eg Nyerere vs Kenyatta, Kenyatta + Nyerere + Obote vs Amin) My solution to this problem which we will eventually face again is to adopt the Swiss model which is basically the presidential council institutionalised but instead of presidents being the ultimate authority in their regions, they would have different dockets (maybe groups of ministries?)that cover the whole country.And so East Africa as a country is governed by a ruling council rather than a single president I am Pro East Africa, having Kilimanjaro and Ruwenzori in my country would be nice 😂😂😂
@jamaafulani5712
@jamaafulani5712 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah. Thanks for covering this. One of the major hurdles of this dream actually. You are so right. Currently power IS concentrated at the top and sadly I doubt there will be any change to the current power structures in East Africa- power structures which are already archaic.

First, I would like to thank you for this excellent comment I would say to your point that regarding the EAC fastly becoming a nation is that those positions do not necessarily make those things a country. If it were, Kosovo and Somaliland would be recognized countries around the world since both have flags, constitutions, parliaments, a capital city, a common market, a customs union and a "somewhat" cooperative Political Federation. What really matters is international recognition for any prospective nation. Sidenote: Kosovo is recognised by 113 UN members and 4 non-UN members: Taiwan, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (the most odd "country" on the planet as they have no land), the Cook Islands, and Niue

Genghis khan China isn't building africa, most projects that china has done in africa are all to make the countries in wich they are built in to be indebted to china so that they can extract natural resources from said countries cheaply and with no regard for the environment (wich most africans countries don't care about mind you, but still for a almost developed nation it isn't such a good thing), and if that weren't bad enough most of the projetcs built are done so by chinese workers instead of hiring the native africans wich won't help improve the income of families in the region where the project was started and can even destroy the small amout of it by doing it in regions that are needed for agriculture and to top it all off chinese engineering isn't the most reliable has some constructions in china have fallen beacuse of safety regulations being ingnored.

@ducky1816

If the East African Federation does happen there is a very high chance the country could become a regional and possibly a global super power, the theoretical country would have extremely high genetic diversity, high population, large amount of resources, stable social and political system, high economic growth, with a fast population growth that could allow it to reach a population of near one billion by the end of this century, these characteristics if developed in the correct way could allow a country similar to the concept of Wakanda to exist in the future, from my experience of the recent advancement of Kenya and Tanzania, this idea is something which is mostly definitely possible.

ducky 181 A country like Wakanda can never exist. Their economy couldn't have existed even with their vibrainium. First they need to open up their country(Ex. Japan was isolated but when they open their selves up and worked with other countries their economy boomed), actually start selling vibrainium to make money(how are going to be so advanced when they don't profit from thee most valuable resource on their planet), not depend on single resource(Ex. Venezuela economy depended on oil so much their economy tanked once the price of oil went down by a little. They need a diverse economy like the U.S. where they depended on many things like entartainment, manufacturing, tourism, tech, restaurants, clothing, and so on), and have a different government( A government like there's wouldn't work at all. You can't have a single person control all the countries resources. In the movie you can see why. Wakanda isn't lucky they have vibrainium. They're lucky they had so many good kings in a row.)

As an E.African youth, i''m a big proponent of the merging of EAC to a federation, but the situation is really complex and while dreamed up by a past generation of visionaries I think will need the next generation for implementation. The entire political class currently is more pro-sovereignity. And understandably so...one could argue that we are only settling in the boundaries given to us by the brits. However i hope at least before i die. We can see the introduction of a common currency. Economically the potential is huge and that can be seen by the trade deals going on between the member states. Globalissation is the goal though. I end up learning about some EAC stuff from a guy in Texa. cheers

I find this process amazing. To think in a whole new country is suprising, like witness history happening. I've read several post of people and it does seem that most citizens are happy with the idea, because it will help reduce the ethnic tensions (as tribes that are now separate will be join again), spark the economy and would make the new country a regional power. I myself would love to see this same process in my region but is very unlikely.

You should also have talked about the creativity and the precolonial history of East Africa and its magnificent architecture such as the ancient Swahili city in Tanzania. Prior to Germo-Anglo-Belgo-French invasions. The innovative spirit of East Africans especially in mobile apps such as Mpesa, Mshwari...now being used globally, an app that does not require a smart phone to do money transfer, the Traffic robot in the Congo DR ..the impressive economic growth despite the global economic downtown and the rise in middle class. Lastly the famous Safari in tourism without forgetting that these East African countries posses the most beautiful women in the world. Thanks Mr Mason for your great work.

Kenyan here. For me, the prospect of a unified East African confederacy is both exciting and terrifying in equal measure. Exciting because it brings together a region with so much in common under one banner and has the potential as you said to create this incredible nation in terms of size, resources, etc. Terrifying however because given the current state that all six countries are in, it'd take a herculean effort to keep those nations together. It is hard enough keeping each individual nation (with diverse ethnic groups, value systems etc) from splintering; imagine how much more difficult it would be to do this with 100+ mini "nations" (which in essence is what these tribal/ethnic groupings are). All things considered, I am not as bullish about the prospects of an EAC at least not in the near-term: relations between the sister nations are a bit fraught, particularly between Kenya and Tanzania. It also doesn't help that we are all at slightly different stages of our development, which could put a strain on things as some nations would feel as though they are carrying others. I also think that even though you could mitigate the aforementioned, in my view, there would still need to be a really compelling "organizing idea" to not only bring these nation together, but also keep them together, through both the good times and challenging ones as well. Such an idea could either be borne out of a mutually shared opportunity (e.g. incredible economic growth etc) or threat (a large enough external power threatening all their sovereignty). Still, I hope our leaders would indeed have the courage and foresight to make this a reality. I'd certainly be for it if it were to happen in our lifetime.

I am Kenyan and am talking from experience the Northern part of Kenya mostly occupied by Nomadic communities like Somalis and Turkanas is dry and the agricultural activities that might be done would likely cost alot of money which my country likely lacks.In the case of Somalia alot of the agricultural activity is takes place along the rivers in Somalia like River Jubba plus most of the products were from herding cattles. Lastly agriculture is not very profitable and Somalia would be better off in the long term if it focused on tourism.

@the Nzone , if somalians let you manage their countries I am sure kenyans would sell it to the asians like you just did to your own , giving asians/indians the label of tribe and allowing them the right to vote and land owining , kenyans have as much corruption as other african countries , somalians are now every where in world and they have many educated youth , I actually can see bright future for them if those guys decided to go back and build their country and stoping the war their , unfortunately all the sides benifiting from them being in war would not allow it to happen easily .. in end I think every country specially in africa mind their own business and not create trouble around them , specially when your own country is not even perfect , go save your country/kenya first from indians and chinese economic invasion .

while I do agree that the question of land must be tackled before or very soon after the country is formed, I think it is inflated. How many people would be willing to uproot their lives and go looking for land in a far off place even if it is cheaper? How many people would be able to afford this land even if it is cheaper than the one they left? I don't think many would move or even be able to afford to buy land in Tz assuming it is cheaper. The speculators are the ones Tanzanians need to fear, large inflows of people from Kenya or Uganda are unlikely. That is this thing actually happens which I doubt it shall.
