IMO, this is not a good deal. You can buy a Broadlink RM Pro/Mini for a third of the price, the broadlink app works flawlessly, and it can be integrated into HA. I don’t see a point in buying yet another remote when we all have a smartphone in our pockets. 😉

Same here, but I was thinking if they allow to pair 2 or more hubs to one remote that would fix the problem, then you could assign specific device to different hub. Place one in your living room (or wherever) and place the other in your closet/rack/basement, etc.

The price, at least for me, is not a deal breaker but what is very convenient is a physical on/off button. I get it that it has four untagged buttons you could use for the remap. But those four color buttons already have functions on many remotes I own. My receiver and Smart TV all use those four colored buttons for specific functions or services.

I have their IQ remote and i love it. I bought it specifically for the learning capability. Moar specifically, my Logitech Z906 surround setup. It works with my TV, VCR (yeah...i have one of those relics), my LED light strips... You name it. This Kickstarter seems like a glorified version of the same thing, and honestly, i can't seem to find the justification to the $100 price tag on this so very similar "upgrade" with a secondary hub. Especially since there's no internal IR emitter within the remote itself. Either way... Good concept, but I'll stick with their precious IQ version until it dies. Great review!

According to the specs I found on Logitech website for the Harmony Elite, the X1 is actually smaller than the Harmony in every dimension. It does bounce signal well, if you watch the video at the 3:00 minute mark, you can see that there is IR LEDS in every direction.

Are the activities just macros rather than being real activities like the harmony where different buttons can control different devices at the same time. For example when watching Freeview on my PVR the sound buttons control the TV/Soundbar sound and not the sound output on the PVR. Hopefully they will add some integration apis as it would be good to be able set lighting scenes from the remotes activity as I do now with the Harmony.

I actually really like the sound of most of this. But, I *think" I would have a problem with this kind of remote. In addition to my HTPC gear, I also control a fan and heater with my current remote. And it is the type that you have to point the remote just right for it to work. Since the fan and heater are in a totally different place than the TV, I am worried that the IR unit setup wouldn't work.
@Ni5ei Жыл бұрын
So when you're in that totally different place than your TV and want to turn on or off the fan and/or heater you have to walk to the other side of the house to get the remote? That doesn't sound very convenient to me 😂
@DoubleMonoLR Жыл бұрын
@@Ni5ei Or they could've simply made the remote capable of sending IR signals directly for chosen devices, (with the hub used otherwise), it's a bit ridiculous that hub only signalling has become common. The amount of power used by sending IR signals is trivial, as is the cost of the components - especially in remotes this expensive. As it is, if people are using the remote away from the hub(the main point of having IR sent from the hub), then the remote is inherently going to be taken to other rooms anyway... Switching between a bedroom and lounge also seems a pretty reasonable use, having to install another hub for potentially only one, or very few, extra device(s) would be pretty excessive. This is going to be *more* common for people that use higher end remotes, as they could have a centralized amp etc feeding amplified audio, video etc to multiple rooms. A device could also be near the hub but have the signal blocked by an object in the way - the signal might still reach by bouncing off the walls, but I imagine there are cases where it won't. The hub naturally isn't going to be in the middle of the room. Never mind devices on the other side of a dividing wall in an open plan design. They also weren't suggesting they were on 'the other side of the house' - 'different place' doesn't inherently mean different part of the house. They said those devices are touchy with the angle of the signal, which can't realistically be changed with the hub. Universal remotes are also very handy for devices where the original remote has been lost, especially if the remote isn't needed very often. Having multiple universal remotes &/or hubs kind of defeats the purpose.

I wish remote companies would just allow users to upload IR codes that they learned from their existing remote, so anyone else could use them (not to mention the user themselves being able to get them again when accidentally removed, or with a new/secondary remote). They could easily divide codes into official & community codes, so they didn't have to provide support for community codes. If some codes were popular, they could also easily test them & move them to official codes. It's such an obvious feature, but companies seem to want to be as secretive as possible with device codes, so people will buy their devices for their black hole of codes. Ironically it would probably have the reverse effect - community provided codes could rapidly provide any company with a vast array of codes, and make their products much more appealing.

Nice review of what looks to be a capable successor. We currently use a Harmony One and I can't tell you how old it is but I fear the day it does go. The activities are the key thing to replace the Harmony, and something that I would be interested in is does the remote split itself when you say 'watch TV'. By that I mean do the arrows control the device you are navigating while the volume controls the surround receiver. This is a great feature for people you are technically challenged or just don't want to learn. It seems rather simple but it makes so much sense, why have would you want a second remote (or even a second mode) when you can just hit the vol up/down. Anything less and I'll be getting the $30 Walmart special.

By any chance, would I be able to use alexa to control an apple tv to, for example, perform the equivalent of “Watch the Morning Show”. ie is there any way of passing a search parameter of any description into apple tv. I’m guessing it would likely be more a case of having to configure the individual button presses to go to home, to go to search (right arrow etc) and then replicating every letter using various arrow buttons. ie a very very painful process. Guessing its the latter, but i’m always an optimist.

Bang on for the price. Shame about the API and the back button...two things that have me throw it out before buying it...I know that makes no sense. The harmony companion...still in use at my place was always let down by the software. Next remote for me will have to meet certain criteria...like working, for one and preferably not having to be plugged in via USB for updates, another.

They just need to use a better font, and make sure the IR on the hub is omni directional.

It's also missing the numbers so entering a number for a channel of the TV or decoder.. you can't do.

This would be an immediate buy if there was Google, Alexa, home kit, and home assistant support.

"pre-production with pre-production software"... sounds about like the harmony hub when i bought it. It didn't even have online access when it came out.

Prerelease software? It comes out next month.

As in, the app I was using on the phone was pre-release

Lack of wireless recharging and lack of number pad for channel selection, both deal breakers for me, so I won't be using this thing. My Harmony has both as well as no need for a hub and it automatically senses motion so when I pick it up, it lights up and I can immediately see everything. Sofabaton doesn't have to toss out features in favor of making the thing tiny. Frankly, I like a good size remote that fits my hand, not a keyfob. Thanks for the review, much appreciated.

I think they forgot one very important key also, the ability to talk to your remote!

Interesting hope they do well. My harmony elite is still going strong but if it breaks, that would be problem. Wish I kept the spare I was given some years ago.

Public API is a deal breaker for me. I'll stick with the RM Pro and RM mini which allow me to trigger basic functions in an automated way, and my phone is my baton. Also I feel lack of number buttons on the baton itself makes no sense for a remote that will replace a TV remote. Overall, nice try so far but those two things makes it a big miss for me.
@EverythingSmartHome3 жыл бұрын
Public API sure, there have been rumours of them adding it so fingers crossed. Buttons I can see, although not everyone watches digital/cable TV anymore (like myself) and have no need for buttons

Need the same suite of buttons as the Harmony and other remotes. Using the scroll wheel to get to a function takes too much effort and time.

I don’t understand why there’s not a more open-source approach to this kind of remotes. They really need to make it available for developers to push their own apps or integrations! This neeeeeds to be compatible with homeassistant!

That's pretty much the YIO Remote Two. It isn't out yet but will work with HA, and has an open source API. But as usual it costs more so the cheapskate market will win out.

Sorely lacking remote system. No network interface and not enough buttons on the remote. I am rather pissed as I bought mine in Apr. 2020. Hoping it is released to open source community. Also as you said, needs integration with Home Assistant as I have my Harmony currently.

I'm a backer, but I wasn't aware that the remote does not connect via Wifi - only bluetooth? That could be a dealbreaker as I want to control the devices in another room. Also shame for me that they added a speaker to the remote, but no IR sender.
@EverythingSmartHome3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean about the Bluetooth sorry?
@bond2k33 жыл бұрын
@@EverythingSmartHome you mentioned there is no wifi on the remote right? I guess the connection from the remote to the hub is then via Bluetooth?
@EverythingSmartHome3 жыл бұрын
No WiFi on the remote no, that's why the battery life is so long compared to some others. I'm not sure what the connection is between the hub and remote, it may be RF like the harmony is.

I've always liked my Harmony remotes and always hated with white hot intensity their stupid web based remote server only interfaces for configuring them. I wonder when their servers will stop working rendering my harmony remotes impossible to modify. I don't suppose they'd consider releasing the protocols so I could run my own server? I hope the sofabaton works locally on the app, and doesn't absolutely require access to their web servers unless you are trying to download codes.

I prefer remotes with physical number keys, scrolling around is a pain.

Not an issue for me and many people who don't watch cable/digital TV and have no need for number buttons but sure I can see why for some it might be a problem! Cheers
