Having roommates in your 20's helps you recognize parts of your personality that are problematic. You can't get a pass from your flatmates like you can with your family. It smooths out your jagged edges.

If you value your friendships, you shouldnt live together. Or at least accept your friends’ living habits.

I lived with two of my longest friends for years and we're still close friends. It does come down to if everyone can respect each other's living habits and preferences. At the same time, if they don't respect your living preferences and work together to compromise, how much do they really respect you?

Fr, it really just comes down to being able to handle or accept how one another lives, if it doesnt work out, then it's best to live seperate, tho i rather live with a friend (in this economy at least) than someone I dont know tho, but yeah depends on how they really are

Even the strongest friendships can break if you can’t compromise. My best mate and I lived at the same campus and moved into the same residential block in our second year and as a result had to share a lot of living spaces with a couple of other guys we were mates with, and our friendship was heavily strained as we struggled to compromise with each others living habits. Thankfully we’re still as close as we were when we moved into the block together but we know for certain we won’t ever live together

Having roommates fucking sucks. Could not WAIT to get a spot of my own. Having to deal with other peoples habits like leaving the dishes in the sink instead of putting them in the dishwasher, leaving their shoes in front of the door so you kick them every time you try to enter or leave, taking the trash out and not replacing the bag. It's the little shit that gets you irritated with people over time.

I live with roommates and feel very similar to Garnt. I’m not usually the type to enjoy hopping in on a spontaneous activity my roommates are doing. Even though we’re friends, most of the time I pass cause I have introvert plans. What sounds like bliss to me is coming home and finding everything in the same spot with no dishes I didn’t make to clean up.

Housemates become less fun the older you get. I recently finished my master's degree and still live in the room when I was a student and trying to become increasingly adult, changing your diet your rhythm trying to keep everything clean and so on, it becomes irritating when your housemates keeps making little mistakes like being late in buying new toilet paper or cleaning the floors or not mentioning when appliances like the shower aren't working properly and so on and it gets increasingly annoying to accommodate them....

To answer Garnt's question on what we learn in highschool, I feel like I learnt far more of the basic practical skills than I ever did at uni. At least for me sixth form was: media literacy, coding, economics and critical thinking. Meanwhile, my computer science degree was basically entirely covered by year 13 computing and a bunch of google searches. Uni was more of a survival as an adult situation.

i have an apartment with 3 of my closest friends. we knew from the start, it wouldnt be easy, and we would have to be comfortable with not only each other, but what everyone else wanted to contribute. if you dont approach it as a team effort instead of individuals sharing a space, then ofcourse it wont work after awhile. you want a space todo whatever you wanted? thats your room, and thats it we all understand this. but every other part of the living space is a team effort to keep things going smooth its all about how much your willing todo for us were willing todo whatever it takes to save money and for us to get ahead in life, so we work together to make it happen, saving money where we can, and all hanging out whenever we can. and its not like we were all well established individuals, one of us didnt even have a education and needing to finish their GED, it took alot of work to get us to where we are, but we stuck through it together, and made it happen. now we all have jobs, and make it a habit to go out and hang out whenever we all have a day off, and since we dont all work the same days, you get personal days inbetween. yes living together can test friendships, thats why you only do it with people you truly know, weve known each other for 15 years, before we did this, i wouldnt do it with just anyone. i think the only annoying thing weve gotten from this is nearly EVERYONE assuming were all in a relationship together because we are able to get along so well and make the living situation work. but we all know who we are, and what we want, and so that doesnt bother us too much, let people believe what they want, while we live debt free, and get to where we want to be, and their living above their means, projecting an image they will get into massive debt to maintain.

I'm in community college now, so I do relate to learning how to be social, especially in a class or career your interested in, it helped me become more attentive compared then high school, and making friends in the process as adults I can relate to has been better.

It’s crazy how positively they look upon their university years, because my time in college fucking sucked and my high school years were the best ones of my life. Connors whole “you have to learn how to make friends” thing….yeah. Didn’t accomplish that in Uni. Made almost no friends and I fucking tried so hard.

My roommate used to pick at his toes to the point where they bleed. He would then dip his foot into a Tupperware full of hydrogen dioxide. After he was done he would place said Tupperware in the kitchen right after. I would ask him to clean it and he would say "it's already clean" this drove me up a wall. Sure I know many people would probably agree with him but this drove me bat shit.

I've found myself in the fortunate position where I own my place and don't need any flatties, but was talking to a good mate and he had no money or anything. Offered him a room in my house for $50 NZD a week plus bills to help him try get ahead. But once he moved in he started drinking a lot of piss and leaving the empty bottles on the floor of the room, leaving empty packets of chips etc all over the floor. Told him I didn't want my place treated that way, but he didn't seem to care. With that and the fact he wouldn't shower often, never washed his bed sheets in the year he was here, just made the room smell like ass, and the smell would waft out into the house when he left his door open and I'd start gagging. Would damage my stuff, leave the front door open all night, leave the stove on and not apologise for any of it. I ended up kicking him out and haven't spoken a word to him since.

8:00 “Why does your bread last for a week?” Because almost WITHOUT EXCEPTION, American households shop ONCE a week and get food for the entire week. We need bread to last at least a week. People only get to the store about once a week, if the bread goes bad before that, no bread until the next shopping trip, sorry. Is it due to preservatives? Yeah, absolutely. Are we gonna start preferring bread that’s fresher but spoils faster? Absolutely not. It’s a necessary evil.
