Well the United Arab Emirates built Dubai in a sandy desert so I don't really see the problem of building a city in an icy desert. Well that's if you're an oil rich country with unlimited financial resources.

I assume there's much more potential for greenery and vegetation in a desert environment compared to a icy one, especially if you build near a sea or river.

I'm from the south of England and I would love to live in northern Norway one day. I visited Tromsø twice before and loved it. Nord-Norge er drømmelandet mitt. 😊 But I hope northern Norway doesn't become home to large cities like Murmansk or Norilsk as it would kind of ruin the landscape.

It wouldn't be too difficult to terraform the terrain and make it habitable for people. However, that would melt away the Arctic ice cap, which would cause significant sea level rise worldwide. So in summary, we most certainly *can* urbanize the Arctic. We just *shouldn't*. We should instead try to terraform deserts. 20% of Earth's land area is covered by deserts. That's a LOT of land. If we could reclaim it, we'd definitely have more resources and room for more people. Just saying.

@Amaling
@Amaling 3 жыл бұрын
Thats waaaay later down the line. Antarctica has the problem of being a separate continent. The artic includes Canada, USA, Norway, and Denmark(greenland) which are some very rich countries per capita. A transport infrastructure, especially in North America, is a realistic goal. The European side of the things has the benefit of being relatively warm for how far north it is compared to NA. Antarctica has neither of these things

Universe &Gaming There are seasons in the arctic. Not accounting for water, the further away from the equator you get, the more pronounced the seasons become. Siberia probably has one of biggest variances of temperature between summer and winter on the planet.
@user-se8mi2io1v
@user-se8mi2io1v 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is very hot here in the Southern Siberia when summer comes, but those people who live beyond Arctic Circle really are in eternal snowland. They have snow on the streets in June. Siberia is very huge, only Yakutia(Sakha republic) is as huge as India. So the climate is very diverse, from the Arctic wasteland where only mad geologists and aboriginal shamans live, to places with very fertile Chernozem soils.

This could be quite a good idea, especially in places with volcanic activity where the hot water could be used as a heating system. The main problem would have to be foundations for buildings though. You need steady terrain in order to build something that's gonna last (wooden huts don't count).
@mischafri8839
@mischafri8839 6 жыл бұрын
Another problem in the arctic regions: there are not many trees and plants because the temperatures are just too low for them to survive. Thats why building big, industrial cities there is challenging. Besides Murmansk, Norilsk is one of the northernmost and, unfortunately, one of the most polluted places on earth, since the environment there cannot regenerate from pollution of the heavy metallurgical industry (Norilsk is in Northern Siberia, where I come from).

Great video! I think we should be clear though, in the real world, it would be a bad thing if we populated these areas, or pretty much any other currently wild areas. We have a huge amount of land we're already living on that could be made more dense with relatively little environmental impact.

Probably wouldn't be a good idea, since urbanization would be catastrophic for the already fragile environment. Unless we have the capability to use a utopian clean energy grid, then maybe. Otherwise, it's too much of a pain.

Northern Norwegian here. What would you like to know? I live in Tromsø and it's quite a unique city (pop. 75k). Urbanisation has skyrocketed here the last few years, and the tourism industry is flourishing. We brand the city as "the Paris of the north". Everyone wants to benefit from the tourism boom. There's a lot of potential here, and huge residential projects and other things are being built pretty much everywhere. There's an ongoing debate over whether the current development is sustainable, personally i think it's going way too fast. Things are almost unrecognisable now in certain districts from how i remember it when i was a kid. The common citizen is struggling more and more to buy apartments. Housing is definitely a major problem. It's also a university city, pulling in thousands of students from other parts of the country and abroad. The Norwegian Polar Institute lies here and there's a satellite station on top of the island (the city lies on a small island). Temperatures are quite stable. The winters are cold but not unbearably cold (around minus 5 to minus 10C is normal). They're dark and therefore quite tough to live through. It can be depressing to live in darkness for so long. We like to say that spring doesn't exist here, because it goes from winter to summer in a matter of days. There's always daylight during may- early august, and it's a beautiful season. The nature is quite lush in the summer, not what you'd expect it to be this far north. Further north you've got Finnmark. The climate there is truly arctic. I've only been there a few times but it's nothing like the climate around Tromsø. Much harsher and sparsely populated. I love it. I love my region and i feel great pride in being from northern Norway but i can't say i like how my city has turned out. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else than in the arctic, it's a truly beautiful and special place and the people are warm and welcoming, especially in the rural areas. I think anyone can find peace here.

well people started to live in Canada much later. But the Indian and Bangladesh areas are one of the cradle of human civilization. That is people live in these areas since ancient times. That's one reason. The climate also is a factor for the huge population. But mostly it's due to socio-economic factors.

You could make a similar video about deserts. We could turn them into solar pannel plants and supply the entire world with all the energy we would ever need.

More people = more heat. More heat = the ice will melt a lot faster than it already is. Melted ice = rising of global water level and the world's temperature. Rising of global water level and the world's temperature will cause catastrophes and eventually most of the land that exist now will become submerged and inhabitable.

I love your new style of videos! I know they're just an addition to GeoNow, but they're great. Would be nice with a bit more of the sharp scientific facts though. Some of the more heavy stuff. Masaman does this quite well

Russia dominates the Arctic because it covers the most territory up there. The Antarctic, however, doesn't predominantly border a single nation. While the Antarctic Treaty prevents territorial claims of the southern continent, without it in place, it would probably be disputed between several southernmost countries - Australia probably ending up taking the greatest share. I mean, it could be different, but that's just my two cents.

Well, as we know, Argentina doesn't have the luxury of setting names for the rest of the world to use. For example, The Falkland Isles.

Well, I think in these extreme conditions, underground settlements would make sense. Since the surface ground is always shifting thanks to frost, we could build at depths where it wouldn't matter anymore. Agriculture could be done using light bulbs made for that and we could even raise livestock in large heated caves by getting them to graze moss instead of grass, which I believe should be possible. Water could be pumped from phreatic zones or collected from the condensation on heating, if this society would judge good to heat their steets, which they should. Power could be provided one of 2 way: if you're in a volcanic zone, Geothermy, if you're not, a Nuclear Reactor. Transportation would have to be entirely electric based, to avoid contaminating the air and massive ventilation shafts would have to go back to the surface to pump air in and throw out contaminant gasses. It could work.

With technology ever moving forward, it's not a too far fetched idea. It would be awesome to live in an arctic city. Although, maybe I only think so because I am that introvert type of person that would love to have a simple excuse to stay at home.
