Loads of Japanese words entered into Palauan, especially for more modern inventions and technology. My coworker from Palau knew some basic Japanese, but actually could often understand when people spoke to her in Japanese just because of the sheer number of shared vocabulary. Not to forget, Japanese also had a strange impact on the names in Palau. They didn't have last names until under Japanese rule, so when made to adopt family names, a lot of people used Japanese names. Interestingly, a lot of those names are actually Japanese GIVEN names, not surnames. And occasionally the reverse is true too, that a parent will name their child Tanaka or something, that is a typical Japanese surname. There's been some interesting linguistic studies on the topic of the use of Japanese in Palau.

we are linguistically and genetically related to each other. in fact, palau and other pacific islanders are descendants of taiwanese aborigines and early filipinos in luzon. hence the similarities.
