I understand when Daniel says that courts don’t like the claims because then it clogs up the system. But maybe then the solution is there has to be a way you are just automatically awarded a set amount without it having to go to court if your details are leaked. Similar to how if you have a flight that is late by a certain amount then you’re automatically entitled to compensation without having to go to court I’m sure if these companies knew that leaks of people’s personal data could have a big financial impact on them, then they’d soon start taking it far more seriously It’s getting very irritating how common data lewis are getting and how companies never suffer any consequences for it

Very unprofessional of them to have leaked such sensitive data… A national insurance number could be used for so many illegal purposes and effectively steal someone’s identity 😞

Many years ago I had the personal details of another student sent to me from the University of Greenwich, who at the time I was regrettably also a student of. Presumably the other student received my details although the University adopted their apparently characteristic 'just ignore them' attitude. In my opinion there should be a mandatory penalty for data breaches like this. As it currently stands there is effectively no penalty unless you suffer significant harm, by which time it's already too late.
